Please be extra-mindful of spoilers, as these games become more and more plot-driven it’s important to avoid revealing even minor details of future events, characters and locations. If you’re not sure if something is spoilery or not, better just throws it in a [spoiler] just in case.

週刊完璧主義通信

ゾットの塔 can’t be revisited, so treasures and bestiary entries can be missed if not collected this week. I couldn’t find a good list of monsters unique to this location online but scouring the fanwiki I believe it’s the following entries:

More details

Last week we returned to Baron, with mixed results. We found Cid back and got a ship, but we also lost Porom and Palom. On top of that we got blackmailed into stealing the Earth Crystal for Golbez in order to save Rosa. Let’s head for トロイア町, in a forest North-West of Baron, and figure it out.

Note that you can land right next to the town to visit it, no need to look for a remote landing spot, this isn’t FF1:

森と水の都トロイアへようこそ!

I recommend going to the castle first, it makes more sense to explore the town once you know what you’ll have to do next, since it will influence your choice of gear. Once inside the castle, you want to do two things: go find the 神官 and inquire about the Earth Crystal, then explore the castle to find a familiar face who will give you an important item: the ひそうひそう. If you find this word confusing, it’s a pun on ひそひそ (whisper) and 草 (weed/grass).

At this point you should know what’s ahead of us: the Crystal was stolen by the Dark Elf who dwells in a cave in the North East. He’s weak to metallic weapons but the cave has a strong magnetic field that makes it impossible to move with metallic gear. So now you should know what kind of gear you want to buy in town…

Speaking of, let’s explore Troya’s town. There are a few fun interactions to be had, of particular interest is the 酒場. There’s a 会員証 for sale for quite a lot of gil that leads to an optional area. There’s nothing particularly worthwhile there, so feel free to ignore and save your cash, although apparently in the 3D versions you can get an “augment” there that boosts gil drops from enemies, so that may be worth getting eventually.

There’s also a building to the North East that hosts black chocobos, and the information you learn there will become very relevant very soon.

When you’re ready, leave Troya, board the ship and fly towards the island to the North East where the Dark Elf’s cave entrance is located. And you’ll find that… there’s nowhere to land. This is getting complicated. So what do we do? Well, we learned in town that black chocobos can fly, cross water and land in forests, and we can find them in the chocobo village North of Troya, so go there:

Recruit one of the chocobos and now you can reach the magnetic cave.

As explained in Troya, anybody using metallic gear will be unable to fight, so make sure that you prepare accordingly. Fortunately Troya has a selection of non-metallic gear, should you need it. I recommend keeping your good metallic gear in your inventory to be able to reequip it as soon as you’re able to do so.

Once you’re done with the cave, you can use テレポ to return to the world map, then ride your black chocobo back to the mainland. Once there, you can report back to the Troyan matriarchs. You can also visit our friend Gilbart.

After the cutscenes, return to your ship to trigger the next sequence.

Once you’re in the tower, note that you can return to the world map using the platform surrounded by spheres at the very start. テレポ however won’t work.

Tips for the top of the tower: there will be a room with save point, and then a boss after that. You can return to the save point after defeating the boss and before continuing. This can be a good idea because it’s not over yet….

Once you’ve completed the tower, return to the world map and save.

L'art de vivre

In Troya’s castle there’s a hidden path that lets you access the moat around the castle, with a bunch of frogs. Talking to the frogs isn’t particularly interesting:

But there’s one specific frog that actually says something:

This is apparently an easter egg that references a comic strip made about Final Fantasy 3 (for those who haven’t played it, FF3 forced you to cast トード on your own party in order to turn your Warriors of Light into frogs to access some locations):

Spoilers for this week below:

The legacy of Astos

Once again we have some callbacks to the Famicom Final Fantasies, in particular FF1:

The Troyan 神官様 are reminiscent of Crescent Lake’s circle of old men (although there were 12 of them and only 8 in Troya, and they’re all women).

The Dark Elf is also clearly a retread of Astos in FF1, although it’s a bit scrambled:

  • in FF1 the elf prince is bedridden due to Astos’ curse. Here we have Prince (King?) Gilbart who’s recovering in bed, but it’s somewhat coincidental.
  • In FF1 Astos steals Matoya’s crystal eye and tricks us into fetching the Crown for him, here the Dark Elf steals the Earth Crystal and he uses trickery to prevent us from using our best weapons and ambush us in the cave.
  • Both Astos and the Dark Elf can shapeshift.
  • And of course the appearance and posture of the Dark Elf is similar to Astos:

There’s also a fairly rare encounter in the magnetic cave with an enemy called the Mindflayer that closely resembles FF1’s psychodemons who were guarding the Crown:

Apparently it has a very small chance of dropping the Mindflayer summon…

Don’t forget to nominate enemy sprites for the poll at the end of the club if something stands out.

Pacing considerations

A bit of a dense week, both gameplay- and Japanese-wise. Probably worth splitting in two sessions. Could even require some grinding for gil and/or XP.

So you have enough time to prepare a rendition of 哀しみのテーマ for us!

I undusted my piano yesterday and started playing my FF Piano Collection books! Got very behind (by never playing it) though, so there’s some time before I reach FFIV.
Now that I’m done with week 5, I can at least try and catch up with 変な家2

Week 5

Of course I went into the magnetic cave before even entering the town or the castle, so I didn’t get the memo about no metallic gear. BAD ENDING unlocked! xD

Anyway, once I got up to speed with what was going on, went back to the cave, with no gear this time. Was fun to see how much it influenced the damage / healing power / spell power / defense, everything really. Made me appreciate even more my Gear gear once I could put it back on!
Also good for Cecil that he was a Paladin already, or I’m guessing he would have to have went all naked

As predicted! Good for Tera that he managed to fulfill his goal.

Nice reunion with Rosa. We just lost our mage after all, had to fill the gap!

Happy that Kain joined too (I did remember that). Aah, love triangles…

Haha the comic is great

Week 5

By the way, I was quite surprised to find the Magus Sisters here! I know them from, this other game I’ve played a bit, Final Fantasy X!

ドグ・マグ・ラグ

I thought their battle sprites were delightful:

A lot of fun random encounter creatures in the Tower of Zott this week too.

I swear, every f***ing time I use an ether I find a save/heal point two seconds later.

I’m splitting into two sessions as suggested. You don’t mention this, but after getting the crystal and going back to town, you get access to a treasure room with a lot of good stuff, including 50,000 gil.

I actually forgot about that one… I didn’t go get it in my playthrough. At any rate I don’t really bother pointing out every single hidden treasure chest, completionists can easily look up full maps online. I think it’s more satisfying to figure those things out on one’s own.

By the way I forgot to reply to your earlier comment:

The problem is that I tend to get sidetracked a lot while preparing these weekly posts (like the detour for the frog comic this week) so my play time is not super representative of anything.

Oh sure, I just found it funny that you were like “you might need to grind for gil” when there’s free, easy gil right there.

(I was going to mention the treasure for others anyway, but your comment made me want to quote you while saying it)

残念. Now I can’t use your time as an excuse to procrastinate. Guess I’ll just have to stay on top of things instead.

Obliquely mentioned at the end of the spreadsheet, since the guard has new dialogue for talking to her after getting permission to enter the room. Earlier on, I even left a note to come back after getting permission! So helpful.

It’s not really a secret, the priestesses practically beg you to loot their treasure.

I can imagine some people skimming all that dialogue since it’s not super important and missing that detail. But if you explore at all you’re bound to find the the room before (and get a dialogue hint) or after.

first half of week 5/before the second dungeon

harp listening

This week is dedicated to the power of music, and to ギルバート for showing up all the folks that trash talked him a few weeks ago (to be fair those people were justified, he’s terrible.)

Seriously though, I really love the way you start this fight with ギルバート’s harp music playing in background. If you go see him after the fight, there will be a little scene where テラ basically forgives him for his daughter’s death, too. Right in the heart :smiling_face_with_tear:

Mythril town

Is this a blues brothers reference!? It wasn’t that long ago that I saw another set of characters based on them in Earthbound/Mother 2. I guess they were really popular in Japan in the early 90s??

After reading your post and investigating, thinking I’d missed 50k gil somewhere, it turns out this treasure is different depending on the version of the game you’re playing. In the original version, all you get is some arrows instead of the gil :frowning:

I like this one!

The Draculady has an interesting hanging-into-frame style, and I also love that the rest of the enemies are set up to compliment her theme.

I spent 100.000 gils so you don't have to

Technically this is week 4 content, but posting here because the 50.000 gils did help.
I should note that I’ve been HATING the dancers in this version :frowning:
So needless to say, I was not very happy with what you get in the member-only section…

Here it is

I don’t understand what the devs were going for with Troya. On one hand it’s a matriarchy where women are in charge of everything, on the other they’re shown to be completely hapless and incapable of doing anything to defend against the Dark Elf and Golbez. Admittedly, it was also true of Damacian, Missidia and Fabul…

I guess it doesn’t help that the kingsguard is wearing bikini armour…

And then they have a jiisan hiding in the bushes watching the women bathe, and the cabaret show is very weird, especially since it’s the only “reward” for a 10k gil investment in the original version. At least on Super Famicom the small 2D sprites make the whole thing look goofy and absurd without any real sexual overtone:

Anyway, let’s move on from that…

re 'rewards' not XP gil or useful items

OMG, I’m dying LoL

I guess this section was programmed by said おじさん…

Oh I just noticed that we get a 万能薬ばんのうやく (usually translated as “Remedy”) in the treasure room of Troya. I believe it’s the first one in the game series since it didn’t exist in the Famicom games. As its Japanese name implies, it heals every status effect (except for death), so it effectively replaces どくげし、きんのはり、おとめのキッス⋯ It’s basically Esuna as an item.

Hm I have 6 of those already, not sure where I got them though

They can drop from some enemies apparently. It’s possible that the drop rate/locations differ in the 3D games or ever the Pixel Remaster.

Also we get a 銀の林檎ぎんのリンゴ that permanently (slightly) boosts the max HP of a character.
