Beautiful colors. I love the SNES so much.

I only just started to browse the forums for the first time this week and the timing couldn’t be better. Playing FF4 was such a core memory during my childhood and I’ve been meaning to seriously get into some language immersion. Unsure how my schedule will be but I’d love to try and participate!

Always nice to have new participants! Having a strong emotional connection to the material is the best motivation for engaging with native content, I’ve found.

I just realized that you all have been playing with a classic turn-based battle system so far, but here comes the ATB system. No more sitting there carefully reading the command menu to find what you’re looking for!

In wait mode you can still take your time to pick spells etc… And you finally have control of exact turn order, no more crossing fingers praying that your curaga fires at the right moment!

What’s trickier is that we’ll also be getting in-combat dialogue, on a timer. Not a lot of it from what I’ve seen so far though.

Probably my biggest apprehension going forwards. I really like having time to sit and think about my actions, hate feeling rushed. But Wait Mode sounds like it mostly alleviates those concerns. I don’t mind a more dynamic turn order system, I quite like how it’s handled in the Trails series (where it determines turn order by speed and if your speed is high enough it’s possible for you to get two turns between other turns - and magic has cast times) so I’ll be interested to see how it feels here

FF10 has a conditional turn based system similar to trails. It’s also my favorite combat system…

I’m so hyped!! I wasn’t even thinking about ATB debuting here but it makes me excited. As for in battle text, that’s what screenshots and being able to pause any time to look at that screenshot is great on the Switch. In the games until now the only battle text we had was the ā€œPreemptive strike/You got ambushedā€ kind of messages.

My first introduction to Final Fantasy IV was actually through Dissidia, and I remember becoming quite curious about the characters as a result. Played about half of it on the GBA and enjoyed it, but dropped it because life won’t let me finish a game.

Looking forward to joining this one!

I was wondering if that would be an option. I looked in the settings before posting my comment, but only from the main menu. I guess it’s only available in-game.

Yes it’s in the in-game ć‚³ćƒ³ćƒ•ć‚£ć‚°. It’s in wait mode by default, too.

I just noticed that ā€œbattle speedā€ and ā€œbattle message speedā€ are also configurable:

Oh and you can configure the window color for the first time. How cool is that?

Oh that’s surprising. I’d expect it to be faithful to the original by default.

By the way, what’s the expected time commitment in the first week and in general. Assuming one played normally (without language barriers) or based on slowly reading a lot of dialogue, whichever you have a better idea of.

I think we have a little above 4k characters for the first week, counting all optional NPC dialogue.

It’s a bit difficult to estimate the play time, it obviously depends heavily on reading speed an willingness to trigger optional dialogue. I’ll say maybe 1 to 1.5h for an intermediate reader?

The screenshot I posted above is the original Super Famicom ROM, it’s wait by default.

Do you feel like a hero yet?

In-combat dialogue isn’t that big of a deal in this one. You can configure the dialogue to be extra slow. One odd thing i noticed is that pressing a button DOES advance combat dialogue! On the slowest speed you get a pretty reasonable amount of time to read, but not if you are mashing the button! I don’t know if it’s always been like that or if it’s just IV, or if it’s just the PR.

Anyway, the combat text we’ve seen before (ambushed, etc) has always been quick and still is. The actual in-combat STORY text is much slower than that, even on normal speed.

In addition, you can just refer to the spreadsheet if you miss it. I’m pretty sure I transcribed all non-trivial combat dialogue.

I think it’s more like 6000, seeing now where the cutoff is. Honestly, if that feels like too much for anyone, just mainline it and skim the NPC dialogue in the spreadsheet.

Wow, okay. Maybe it’s just been too long since I’ve played FF4. I don’t remember waiting by default in FF7 or FF8, so maybe it changed in later games, but it’s been like 15 years since I’ve even played those, so maybe I’m just forgetting for those too.

IIRC FF7 at least has Wait/Recommended/Active, where Recommended is basically Active except it pauses during long attack animations. Not sure if it was the first to have that - the SNES games didn’t have any attacks as long as Knights of Round.

As promised I have posted next week’s thread in advance for those who will be too busy next weekend and prefer to play ahead:

If you don’t have such constraints I recommend ignoring this for now, I’ll post a reminder next week when the proper time comes.

Week 3 will be posted on July 11 normally.
