It’s okay. I started playing in English.

LET’S HUNT DOWN SOME GOBLINS

I did include a thief in my party; no real reason other than it seemed the “classic” pick to me. He does Warrior damage but wears less armor. Might as well use a second warrior.

In the original FF1, the game was deadly. Running away was a legitimate need. Items and healing spells were in short supply, monsters were dangerous, and it was a long way back to town to revive and heal. I remember running away ALL THE TIME.

The remaster is so stupidly easy that it honestly doesn’t matter what your party is. I たたかう with my white and black mage all day long. Heck, I didn’t even put them in the back row! Whack whack whack. The encounter rate wasn’t nerfed, but the EXP and gold are doubled, so I was massively overleveled before long. You can even eventually find items that cast infinite spells (for healing and damage). By halfway through the game or less, you’ll auto down the bosses with basic attacks and have 99 of every item.

A fun bit of crossover content - the runs through an area (and sometimes all the way back out) are so long and have sooo many encounters that I find its a great time to go through anki and WK reviews while my buddies autobattle everything to death. This game absolutely does not respect your time, but it came out when I was a child, and I didn’t really respect my time either back then. So, I can’t really get too mad at it. I do wish they’d reduced the encounter rate when they increased the gold/exp rewards, though.

I did an English run through of the first few sections earlier this week, and I found the F3 button (to toggle encounters on the PR version) very useful. I could make progress and be collecting some drops, experience and cash while still not be running out of spells and scarce potions and have to run back to town for a kip.

A clussic PR stunt :squinting_face_with_tongue:

I drew the line at some of the config options, like multiplying cash and experience rewards. I may be a cheat, but I have my limits.

Of course ||ultimately the four white mage party bailed them out, lol||

Glad someone will get any 8 bit theater references I throw out

Today is the OFFICIAL start of the club! If your were patient, now is the time to join us in the week 1 thread. If you weren’t patient, see you next week for the next chapter of our adventures.

Also I want to highlight this proposal of mine:

I’ve been very patient I think! Haven’t started on week 2’s content yet :flexed_biceps:

Wait, I’m a bit confused. I thought week 1 was split into 2, so for the next week we do the second half (going into the shrine) but still post in the Week 1 thread, right?

And the week 2 thread will go up after that.

No the shrine is next week, there’s nothing new this week. Given that there’s a good chunk of NPC dialogue I wanted to give more time for people to make it through it all without stress.

I feel like I have overcomplicated things by attempting to make them simpler

The pace is really slow now because there’s a lot of dialogue and not much dungeoning but the balance should improve starting with week 3 or 4. I realize that for people who are more comfortable with Japanese these first few weeks will be a bit frustrating due to their short length and limited amount of gameplay
 It’ll get better, I promise.

Don’t worry for those people, they have most likely committed themselves to way too many book clubs by now, so they are fine with waiting

That felt incredibly personal

If I don’t count the ones that I’m on hiatus in because I’m so far behind, especially when the club has already finished the last (available) volume, I’m not in too many!

how many is too many :face_with_peeking_eye:

Clearly that’s not too many.

@shuly , @shitsurei is that the secret to staying with a bookclub until the end? I always drop out after a few weeks cause the speed is too slow and I get bored. I actually wanted to do a “help me thread” soon, as a serial book club dropper

You can always read ahead if it’s too slow

semi off topic....

There are a few reasons I have so many going

A main one is that I have a bingo card that I’m working on a blackout (and it seems like a reachable goal after all l!!!) felt impossible but now very very doable!

Other stuff just wanted to read or was interested

If you are finding the book boring then no harm
I’ve dropped a few for that reason.

If it’s about trying to push through a book you like but the pace is too slow, try reading 1 week ahead so you an always click the “I’ve already read it” option. Might be a fun way to motivate yourself (if you like the book)

The trick is to find something you don’t want to put down
werewolf book is turning out pretty fun
(though I didn’t read with the club following the threads now - finished ch3
@shitsurei is the werewolf i sure! haha seriously don’t spoil it though
curious how it’s all going to turn out)

The other fun one is zenitendo
it was too hard originally but I came back to it and aside from this annoying beauty school drop out portion
it’s pretty fun! (though a ton of hiragana which can make parsing a bit tricky sometimes)

Not sure what the best thing to do is
but when you find a book you really want to read, particular subject matter, whatever it is
if you can find it at the right level to be approachable (some lookups ok but not constantly)
reading can be fun. But the story has to be interesting.

Maybe browse through the past bookclubs and read on your own too if a topic interests you. Can always revive a thread, someone will respond and help usually - even if it’s been a year.

If you are i need of additional reading motivation, the equinox readathon is coming up in 2-3 weeks or something
 join us :books: :worm:
