FF1 definitely will be a much, MUCH lower amount of time needed. Also congrats, glad you’re still hanging in with us
That’s good news! Maybe I can wrap it up before Final Fantasy 1 officially starts! That would be so great!!
I imagine that would be tough – I edited my post slightly to make sure what I meant was clear but I was saying FF1 will require a tiny amount of reading per week compared to the huge volume of challenging stuff Fata Morgana is full of. For FM you do still have quite a lot to go.
Are you Sky Knight? Or made by someone else?
Cool guides in any case.
I want to try every possible lineups.
Alright, just one lineup will be totally fine I guess.
No not me, found randomly online and seemed comprehensive.
Hey so do I start playing now or after the post on Saturday? Is everything related to this going to be within this thread? I’m a little confused on the prestart vs actual start it seems are in the plans.
Also I like the idea of warrior x3 then red mage. New to all of this and Japanese so that may be the simplest.
You start on Saturday (I will check and the filthy preplayers won’t get the complimentary Cacolac). All the info is going to be in the dedicated thread.
I just shared this bit here so that people who don’t know anything about the game aren’t spooked/confused by people talking team composition.
I’m planning to copy 8-bit theater’s comp, which apparently was Warrior, Black Mage, Thief, Red Mage. Could’ve swore White Mage was part of the party, but I guess I’m misremembering the plot a bit. Thankfully it sounds like this is still a “reasonable” party, unlike 4 white mages.
I thought I was gonna be a preplayer but luckily for me I didn’t have the time. Also I think I’m gonna play it twice as in a little on my phone when I am free and not at home and then once again on the computer.
Ah! なるほど
Thank you for letting me know.
I will 頑張ります!
Just wanted to say hello to everyone and that I’m looking forward to this challenge and playing through Final Fantasy.
Final Fantasy was one of the very first RPGs I ever played, back on the NES when it first came to America in 1990. I have such fond memories of it, and I play it again every couple of years. Now to play it in Japanese while I am learning the language is very exciting and will help break up the occasional learning monotony.
But what is really exciting to me is the number of people in this thread who haven’t had the opportunity to play the game before. It’s going to be an amazing journey, and I look forward to the next several months with all of you!
Welcome! Cool backstory (I misread at first and thought you came to America in 1990, not the game xD). Also, username approved
Hm I’m still thinking about which party to make…
I definitely want 4 different roles. The dilemma is not so much on how to beat the game but also on what makes sense for Japanese.
I feel like by not having a white mage I would be missing out on too much useful vocabulary for future games.
If I have a white mage + a black mage + a red mage, chances are that they will share a lot of gear and I will be missing out on other kind of gear vocabulary.
Thief does not sound like a great pick for this game I don’t want to flee combat
So I’m thinking something like warrior + white mage + monk + black mage, a bit vanilla, but should cover everything (basically also your suggestion)
Yeah that’s the party I used when I did my scouting playthrough last month, it’s probably the most versatile team since you cover pretty much everything the game has to offer. It is on the weaker side early on because the monk and black mage take a bit of time to reach their full potential and the white mage is usually more of a support role (although Dia is one of the most powerful offensive spells accessible at the start of the game), but the warrior can carry just fine.
If you use a party in FF1, does the same party get taken through to FF2, etc, or does each game start anew? Also does this discussion mean I can make life a little easier on myself (in terms of Japanese) by say doubling up on warriors for a first run-through because there will be less vocab? And would that be dumb for game-mechanics?
Each game start anew. They could almost be called independent games, only the universe present similarities (for example the Chocobos) (there are of course exception, for example FFX-2 is the direct sequel of FFX and has some of the same protagonists. no transfer of party members though, anyone can play FFX-2 without having played FFX (or FFI to FFIX for that matter))
Yes technically you will encounter less new terms if you have less different classes.
I don’t think it’s dumb, it can work, but a balanced team can give you an advantage in combat. See this comment above for a short description of what the difference classes can do
In the sense that you won’t have to deal with as much spells and inventory potentially then maybe yes, but frankly I doubt it’ll make a big difference:
- You’ll still encounter all sorts of items in treasure chests and shops, so you’ll have to decide if you want to take the time to translate them or not anyway;
- In most versions of the game you get quality of life improvements that, for instance, let you equip the best gear that you have available. So basically not knowing the name of the weapons/pieces of armour is really not a problem, all that matters is if there’s a green or red arrow next to it when you want to equip them (if you play the original game on Famicom it’s a different story because there you don’t see any stats, you have to go by name and price to guess if it’s good or bad and who will be able to equip it);
- All spells and a lot of items are named in English with katakana names, so it’s not too difficult to remember what they are once you’ve translated them once or twice;
- And even then the vast majority of gameplay-related vocab is going to be the name of enemies and their attacks/spells/skills, and that won’t change depending on your choice of party.
For instance if you look at this weapon shop screen you may not know what 杖 means (it’s not even on WaniKani after all) but you also have a fairly explicit icon, and at any rate the most important info is at the bottom of the screen where you can see that I already have it equipped on my monk and black mage while it would be a worse weapon for my warrior and white mage:
Also notice that all other weapons in this shop are named with English katakana names.
And if you ever have a doubt, all the item names and their translation will be listed in the Google Sheet.
I started playing Final Fantasy VIII only a few months after starting to learn Japanese so, as you can imagine, I was quite terrible at it, but the combat vocab was not much of an issue, the visuals and the menu positions will soon become 2nd nature and you’ll be able to select what you want to do without even having to read anything. Most of the gear decisions will boil down to “what number is bigger” so you also don’t really need to worry too much.
Item descriptions like the various potions and ointments can be a bit trickier to deal with, but in this game only 毒消し(どくけし)is really worth knowing IMO given that every other enemy is poisonous.
By the way for those who feel a bit overwhelmed jumping into an unfamiliar game in an unfamiliar language, one thing that can help massively is simply going quickly through the start of the game in English before starting the Japanese version. The Pixel Remaster should let you change the language in the options.
You can probably cover all of week 1’s content in about 15 minutes, then reset and do it again in Japanese. If you already know the gist of what’s happening, it will help comprehension massively and this way you won’t worry about missing something important.
You can change the language at any moment (with the Pixel Remaster) and reload your save, so you can repeat the process every week if you want.
Alternatively you can do it the other way around: play in Japanese trying to understand as much as possible, then replay in English to see what you missed.
Hey everyone! This will be my first club on WaniKani. Looking forward to it and will try to be active in the conversation. I haven’t played FF1 before, but I wanted to do a fun party to keep it interesting, so I am planning on playing with an all mage party. Hopefully I’ll run into some wacky scenarios because of it
