Feature Requests

  1. “That was a typo” button. There are SO MANY times I fat-finger a flashcard, get it wrong, and now it keeps coming back. I’d like to have a button where, when I get it wrong because of a typo, I can change it to “got it correct”.
  2. I would like to have a “burn/delete” button. There are some cards I just don’t care about, or are so redundant (oku/ichi-oku/ichi-oku-en) or annoying that I want to just get rid of them.
  3. Show correct answer - when I get it wrong, it’s annoying to have to click again to see what the correct answer is. It would be great if, when I get it wrong, the correct answer is displayed without further clicking (then I don’t need the mouse at all!)

Thanks for a fun product!

At least for point number three, you can press the “F” key to have it show the meaning/reading after you answer

Yes, a lot of us want these things…

I think biggest one for me would be #3 where the correct answer is read out to you. That way it sticks via the auditory system and not the visual system since I try to remember them by their sound. In other words I try to say the word and then type it out.

#2 there are a lot of words we dont necessarily care about in the english language yet its still important to know them. Im not a fortune teller so I cant really know what words I will need. Saw somewhere where someone was complaining about baseball terminology. Guess what Japan is in love with baseball and its very boring when everyone is into a sport and you have to sit out the discussion!

#1 is something I suffer with on a daily basis and unfortunately the only cure is to pay closer attention and type mindfully and slowly because its not a race and by speeding up pointlessly the durtles will laugh at the easily avoidable mistake.

Oh, one more!

  1. For each level, a printable worksheet that has WRITING practice for each character, showing stroke order and having some squares for practicing. I think adding writing to the multi-sensory experience will help a lot. ESPECIALLY for those closely-lookalike kanji.

There are extensions for both 1 and 3 (Search on the Wanikani Ultimate 365 guide - extension section). 2 will probably never be implemented. Simply not in their interest to let users choose what words they learn, given that this is a subscription based service.

you could ask people here to point you in the right direction for good writing material
wanikani is mostly about learning to read and writing isn’t a part of its goal

I appreciate the spirit in which this suggestion to just go slower was given, but I just made a typo on 学生。I also appreciate the many people who explain that there are widgets and scripts and such things, but when I learned programing you typed on physical cards and fed them manually into a huge room sized computer. I don’t know how to work with scripts and widgets and am afraid to try.

I fat-finger the English as well…

Their stance on adding an “undo” button is a persistent no. Best to use scripts

With regard to #1:

This is an admittedly low-tech solution, but you can simply exit out of a review without finishing it.

Review responses are only recorded if they’re correct. Wrong answers aren’t recorded until you answer that card (both the translation and the reading) correctly.

If you knew what the answer was but simply mistyped, exit the review and come back. The system won’t notice you answered it wrong earlier.

I try to avoid doing this, but if I’ll do it if I was about to burn something and just fat-fingered it.

(I know this works on a desktop via Firefox. I have no idea if it works on mobile, via an app, or with a different browser.)

Works on mobile web. I think any wrong should make it entirely wrong to patch up this behavior.

If you don’t mind using a phone/tablet, there are mobile apps that have the majority of the features you want already built in, with easy to use settings screens to customize which features you want. All you have to do is go to your settings in WK to generate and API key and stick it in.

IOs: Tsurukame
Android: Smouldering Durtles

I haven’t bothered with scripts on my PC, I just use the apps. No more being punished for legitimate typos.

Thank you! I might be able to manage to do this.
