Easy way to listen to live Japanese radio?

I’m looking for some more talk radio listening options.

I have plenty of podcasts, I am looking for some more radio options for Japanese language immersion.

I am aware of radio garden, but a lot of the JP stations tend to be music stations, but I am looking for people speaking. I also need a VPN to use this as I am in the UK.

Lots of the state broadcasters need my apps store to be Japan region

Here’s one good example I’ve found that just works:

There’s this app on Android ラジオ FM Radio Japan

Also some radio shows have YouTube channels, like https://youtube.com/@soreyuke_?si=DhJLRsJQyobtgxHa

If you look up Japanese AM radio on Google, a lot of hits come up. Maybe something from there will work out. In general, AM is going to be more talking or news type stuff. As you mentioned, FM has a lot of music

This is a slightly nerdier way to find some spoken Japanese radio, but it’s free and a web-based program

KiwiSDR is an online radio listening program. Basically, it’s a radio version of the VPN setting that changes your location. there are quite a few stations for listening in Japan. I find that the easiest way to get a station is with the map feature

each little pin is a place that you can listen to radio from. the best bet is to find a station near Tokyo, most likely AM, find the frequency, and put it into KiwiSDR. You can ignore most of the technical things that are really only for those into the tech behind the broadcast. Don’t worry about anything outside of those two red circles I made (unless you want to, but it’s not needed). This particular program uses kilohertz for frequency, but whatever you put in will be converted for you

some kind of station audible in Chiba. I’m in public so I can’t listen to see what it is

Thank you so much this is exactly what I needed, you are a hero :green_heart:

Wikipedia’s list of Japanese radio stations says 1242kHz in the Kanto region is Nippon Broadcasting System (commercial; talk and sports).

I didn’t manage to find any other stations with decent signal from that Chiba receiver but I didn’t play about with it very long.

I’m a radio-holic (OK, that’s not a real word) too…

While I’ve used a variety of web SDRs as well as my own radio equipment for listening to NHK shortwave broadcasts in Japanese, I had not considered looking for Japan-based web SDRs for listening to local broadcasts.

It’s a great idea, I will have to try it.
