I understand why we cut the chapter in half, but does feel a bit of a shame to only have half of the first chapter to discuss
Week 1
So I found the goofy English in the scene where everyone is turning to stone quite funny
Is this… a cerebral infarct! Is it?
Also was that president supposed to resemble Trump? Because if so that’s also funny
The detail about the birds turning to stone a little while back is interesting, adds a bit of an extra wrinkle of mystery to what on earth has happened - it helps make explicit that whatever this is was targeted (we also see this by the way animals don’t get encased in stone)
The whole sequence with seeing the world fall into ruin as humanity becomes stone was great, really sells the scale of what’s happening
Also another funny detail, 大樹’s name is literally Big Tree Big Tree (大木大樹)
Not too much to say on our other main character yet, expect more from him in week 2 onwards
I pondered that. The first chapter was published in Shonen Jump on March 6th, 2017, a month and change after the Tangerine’s first inauguration, so it’s certainly possible.
I think the consensus is that it’s definitely supposed to be Trump. The article below discusses Trump’s other appearances in manga, and some other presidents. It doesn’t really give any spoilers for the manga - but it does explain the general direction of travel for this manga, so avoid if you really want to read it blind!
If you check the Japanese page of the same word, then cerebral infarction is suggested as the English term before stroke, could have been why it ended that way:
Such a great opening for a manga series. Page 1 may be my favourite opening page of any manga. I remember reading this after seeing a picture of the characters in a banner on the Shonen Jump app and thinking it looked interesting, but having no idea what the story was about. And being immediately gripped by this core concept. I have some more thoughts on that but I’ll save them til we have a bit more story behind us.
If you don’t know - the Shonen Jump app lets you read the first 3 volumes chapters of most manga without a subscription, so if you are interested in looking at an English translation of this one it’s free to access.
