Could they be rejecting it because they don’t do foreign transactions? If that’s the case, definitely try talking to them because they might know different methods you can use. But is it not possible to call them, rather than going all the way there in person?
your right but i think they will tell me to visit anyway
but thank you i really didn’t even want to think about it
My bank often declines sudden charges in other countries because it looks like potential “stolen card or card number” fraud. A single phone call to the number on the back of the card usually clears it up - they just want to make sure it’s really me.
I imagine they have some sort of AI “this doesn’t match ctmf’s usual pattern” flagger, and sometimes I do something unpredictable enough to trip it. Having to call the number once in a blue moon is a little embarrassing when it happens while I’m standing in a checkout line, but on the other hand it has at least once caught someone who actually did steal my card info and try to use it for themselves.
And I just expect that’s going to happen at least once when I travel to Japan, even after I tell the bank I’m going. Happens every time. Now I make sure to carry enough cash for any purchase as a backup for the first week or so, and call later.
Happened to me once as well, but not with WaniKani. I got an SMS message that said that the transaction was rejected and to call some number.
I actually went to the bank in person, because I hate phone calls with a passion, but I ended up having to call that number anyway. It wasn’t anything scary - they’re likely just going to verify if it’s actually you and tell you to make the transaction again.
This is one of the reasons I have multiple credit cards. In fact I’m in Japan right now and one card got declined yesterday: it would have been awkward not to have a backup option until I can get in touch with the bank again (which might not be til I get home, if I’m unlucky).
On vacation? If you’re near Tokyo and up for it, it’d be cool to meet up. Been awhile since I’ve seen anyone from wanikani.
Yes, holiday, but going round Tohoku/Hokkaido, so won’t be back in Tokyo until briefly at the tail end of April (20th-22nd) to catch a flight. We could try to make something work out then if you’re not busy I guess.
Yeah, seems like a possibility. We can get in touch once the date gets a bit closer and see what works. You can add me on discord if you have it since making plans on here is a bit sketch. Username is baniradesu
Sure; which discord server?
You can directly add people as friends and DM them
I have wondered in the past if any WK folks have ever done any sort of gatherings or events in places where there are few folks around.
Email us over at hello@wanikani.com. One of us will talk with you and see what your payment options are. But since you tried and the bank rejected it, this will likely be something you need to contact your bank about.
