Introducing DailyKanji.xyz !
Introducing DailyKanji.xyz, a site to help you build the habit of learning Japanese vocabulary in small increments, focusing on making small, consistent progress.
What is it good for?
Initially, I came up with the idea because I’ve tried and failed to learn Japanese a few times. I would start learning during a break from university for around an hour per day for a week or two, make some progress, but then give up as the next semester’s workload came around. I realized that my problem was that I was focused on learning as fast as possible, rather than building a strong habit of studying every day, regardless of how much time I spent.
Instead of optimizing for an hour a day of study, the site eases you in with the Atomic Habits philosophy of only learning a few words per day, with the goal of being as consistent as possible.
What features does it offer?
It offers one word per day for each JLPT level (meaning 5 words in total) including stroke order, pronunciation in katakana, and native speaker audio* for each word. Once you mark a word as studied, it will be saved as a card in the built-in SRS. You can go to the /stats
page to see which days you studied, which words were available that day, and which words you missed.
Next steps for the project
It’s been in development for around a month and a half (see my previous post about it), and since launching I’ve iterated on it a bunch of times. The next features on my roadmap are Spanish language support, streaks, and a leaderboard. I got a lot of good feedback on the previous post, so I look forward to hearing what you all have to say
*Currently native speaker audio is a WIP, and is unavailable for ~10% of words on the site (mostly N1 & N2).
