Dadung's study log

Soo, I have come to the conclusion that some level of accountability might be helpful, so I will start a study log, the same way all of the cool kids do! (or did years ago, I am out of touch :man_shrugging:)

How are my studies going?

Well, considering I started here in 2017, I guess not too good

Level: 34
Typical Level-up: 19 days, 1 hour , 50 minutes
Time on Level: 1 day , 5 hours, 45 minutes
Level-up In: 17 days, 20 hours, 5 minutes
Start Date: 2017-04-18 (3245 days ago)
Restart Date: 2023-12-27 (801 days ago)

Though, considering the more realistic assumption that I have only been properly studying since that restart, it’s not that bad. Back in the day I actually made it somewhere into the 30s of WK aswell, speeding along like hell, but then life came around and I did not find the time at all anymore. Several restarts and stops later, this is where we are. But, at least this run has been the most effective one yet, the first time I actually feel like I can reasonably use some of my japanese.

What do I use?

Back when I started I used the Japanese From Zero textbooks, but was not happy with their pacing. My main grammar resource has instead been Tae Kim’s Grammar guide this time around. Just yesterday, I finished working through it (the printed version, no idea if the online one is longer). Therefore, I currently don’t know what I want to do for grammar, but probably my main focus should be on solidifying this heap of grammar, which I forget about the moment I start speaking.
Otherwise I obviously do WK everyday. Last year my pace was quite slow, but maybe I can speed up a bit from now on, since I have a bit more time in my private life than I had before. I also have a self collected Anki deck, which I consistently update and practice during my commutes. And, somehow I am still stuck with the Owl, guess a streak is afterall quite the catchy mechanic. Though this is also just something I fit into some parts of my commute.
Regarding more applied content I try to listen, shadow and read everyday. I mostly listen to some learning podcasts on youtube and use those for shadowing as well (think: Bite Size Japanese Podcast, Yuyuの日本語). I do some reading aswell. My starting point was always NHK easy, but since my app broke and I kind of was growing out of it anyway, I have started touching actual lightnovels or the occasional NHK article. Also some of the なぜ?どうして?books. I might update what I am reading once I work on something a bit more consistently.
Lastly, I have recently started doing some ITalki lessons, which made painfully obvious again, the difference between active and passive capabilities. So I will try to put some more work into production type practice, if I can find some opportunities to talk to natives that would be optimal, but my schedule is still quite tight so I’ll see.

Where are we going with this?

Well, the reason I was able to motivate myself, despite the lack of available time, to study for the last two years, is that I want to try moving to Japan for my next job. I am currently contacting people and applying to opportunities, so maybe something big will happen in the not too far future.

What else is there about me?

So, I have constantly alluded to me having absolutely no time, so why is that? Well, firstly I am now finally in the last stages of my PhD, so while I have a very high level of job flexibility, I kind of need to hustle to get some stuff finally done.
Apart from that, until last year I was actively competing in ballroom dancing at national and international competitions, which meant a bunch of practice and travelling, which is not too helpful when trying to setup study routines! However, this has now come to an end, which is the reason why I have slightly more time at hand. Though, since I have been doing a bunch of sports my entire life, I still have to do something three or four times a week (currently mainly swimming), just so I don’t feel like shit. And, since this part fell under the bus the last years, I am trying to revive my social life, which means the time gain is pretty marginal, mainly in not having competition weekends, which completely disrupt everything.

Soo, that was the introduction of everything going on! I probably won’t make daily posts here, as I don’t really have interesting things to report on a daily basis, but I will try to check in more than once a week and provide something from my studies and some accountability. I’m happy about everyone joining me on this journey, so feel free to comment on whatever I drop. よろしくお願いします!。

Fortunately for me, being a cool kid is not a requirement though it seems I’m kind of the exception that maybe proves the rule. I can definitely imagine competing at ballroom dancing at that level could definitely put a crimp in other pursuits, but fortunately the language is still here and hopefully you will have the time now to focus on it a little more.

Yes, it certainly does not run away

Soo, today I finished, what has been a project for what feels like an eternity. I read the last pages of 秋の牢獄. I had a quite strict no dictionary policy for this one, as that has been what made me really progress when learning English back in the day, however this was then actually outside my capabilities. I feel like I grasped the general plot and also could read some passages quite well, but I most likely also missed some points and some plot entirely. So for the next project I will utilize a dictionary a bit more, though I don’t want to move into a mode where I look for words every few seconds. Speaking of the next project, I am starting the first volume of ようこそ実力至上主義の教室へ. Let’s see how this goes.
My Wanikani reviews these days have been quite bad - I saw a forecast of 166 earlier today and my accuracy dropped below 90 for multiple sessions, so I will probably fall back to 10 lessons for now and try to get a grip on this again, since I absolutely don’t want to see such numbers in my forecast

As I recall this book had some infrequent vocab. I read it back when I was much more into Anki’ing books and I confirmed that yeah, some are not that common (based on my anecdata of reading many many books since then). Like native speaker would know them? Yeah, sure. But common and come up a lot? Nope.

Some examples:
幽閉 - ゆうへい - imprisonment (I remember wanting it to have something to do with ghosts, but nope!)
謁見 - えっけん - audience with nobility (to be fair, people who read fantasy or history stuff probably see this more than I do)
夜伽 - よとぎ - 女が男と共に寝て相手をすること。
格子 - こうし - lattice

I think short stories might just be bad for no dictionary projects. With a novel you should be looking up less and less and unknown words either a) don’t matter or b) make sense eventually through context. With short stories you have so much less to go on and missing a few words can result in not totally following what’s happening.

Can confirm. That was the only vocab word out of the 4 that I knew

Fair enough, those words do not seem like anything I would regularly encounter  (And I have no recollection of doing so in the book either )
But yes, I hope that this gets better this time round with a more continuous story.

Now, that you say it like that, it kinda makes sense for short stories to be unsuitable for no-dictionary reading. Often short stories afterall also have a higher literary aspiration that regular novels, which probably also explains the weird vocab

Soo, yesterday I actually managed to actually read the entire first chapter and another two pages this morning. My current biggest challenge: Processing Dialogues/Monologues. I have not always been quite able to identify who is saying which sentences, or if passages were internal monologue instead of conversation. I feel like that should always be quite obvious from the context, but somehow I miss it from time to time.
My Wanikani reviews are still going not too well, probably I need to concentrate a bit more and take some more time to process the mistakes. My biggest leeches right now are 論理 and 理論, I can’t for the hell of it, wrap my head around which one has which meaning. And so I have been quite badly tilt-guessing these for weeks.

Learn some as parts of words and it might feel less abstract. Like 理論化学 (theoretical chemistry… So something you think about but not clear cut and established) vs 論理図 (logic diagram, very clear cut)

Or do a connected sound shortcut like people who are too logical all the time are lonely (ろんり)

Thanks, that sounds like something that might actually help me! I have added some words to my Anki deck, so maybe I will see how that goes, but associations like theoretical chemistry feel like they could break this pattern!

There are also things like ゲーム理論(りろん) and 相対性理論(そうたいせいりろん) and various other ~理論(りろん).

About another one, maybe 論理性(ろんりせい) or 論理学(ろんりがく). Maybe I am not very used to this word, confusing with 倫理学(りんりがく)論理的(ろんりてき)

That’s another great one!

When I put 論理 into a dictionary to see what nice words I could add to my Anki deck, I also immediately jumped to something like 論理的, however 5 seconds later I was like: Wait, that has the exact same problem I was trying to address, as the other way round is also fine

Today I had some time, so I decided to look back through some of the grammar points, where I thought I might want to reread the explanations. While looking through the “になる” and “にする” section, the very last example sentence caught my eye:

地下に入って富士山が見えなくなった。

This pattern is actually different from both prior examples, which used forms like 引けるようになった
So I was wondering, why this sentence should not instead be:

地下に入って富士山が見えないようになった。

To be fair, both sentences seemed quite possible to me, so I threw the latter parts into Google and both returned plenty results, so this confirmed my feeling.
Then I wanted to know the difference, which came out as

見えなくなった。-> 自然な変化
見えないようになった。-> 意図的な変化/階段的

So, the first describes a natural change, while the second describes an artificial and/or gradual change.

At least, that’s what I parsed from the Japanese AI summary :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
I thought this was interesting, so I dumped it here, but most likely that level of nuance is not something I would realize and/or try to convey for some time

Today I actually read a bunch of pages, as I had to pass some time after work. I am still unsure what pace I should work with, but I fall back to accepting some missing words and some not perfectly parsed sentences, as translating every sentence in details would be waaay to slow. Maybe I should do it for some interesting ones I run into.
I also watched some death note recently, on japanese with japanese subtitles. I don’t know why, but the subtitles feel like they help me so much, even though I am by far not fast enough to actually read the entirety. I watched it years ago, so I know most of the rough story, but not much of the dialogue anymore. I feel like I get the gist of most situations, but honestly I guess you would get a lot even without audio  Nonetheless, any “downtime” spent with japanese content over watching another random youtube video is a win I guess
Apart from that, Anki is a pain right now, as I dumped a bunch of words from the first parts of the book, before I reduced that habit. And that means my review and “lesson” counts are high and I run into much more words that I don’t know than ordinarily would happen.
WK is going ok, the accuracy is moving up again, still not where I would like it to be, but at least above 90% again. I actually did my last Kanji lessons today, as I knew 3 of the 5 remaining ones anyway, so this will probably be my fastest level in ages.

So, this morning I actually leveled up, which was surprisingly quick. In fact only levels 1, 2 and 16 have been faster this run, so I gotta make sure I don’t overdo it  Recently I have gone with the rhythm of doing 10 lessons in the order they are given and then doing ~5 lessons on things I kinda already know. That way the extra lessons don’t hit that badly, but it also means that the regular lessons see much less content I have an idea about

Apart from that I still was quite busy in recent days. I did some reading and managed to get to the proper second chapter of ようこそ実力至上主義の教室へ. Apparently, what I thought were chapters before are just subchapters or something. Nonetheless, that means I am already ~60 pages in. The last two pages were a very encouraging experience - there was only one sentence I did not get, apart from that I basically understood everything. So that feels nice

Listening is back to the usual struggle right now: If I really concentrate, I can get quite a lot, but the moment my thoughts drift of even the slightest bit, which they do a lot, I just miss everything. So still very little passive comprehension. I guess I am still not wired to think in japanese at all. But that should come with time.
I have also watched a couple more episodes of Death Note, but those suffered from less focus aswell. That was kind of a general problem in recent days, I just was not sufficiently focused.

Otherwise, there’s around 2 weeks left till I need to submit some applications including research proposals, so I regularly end up refining those for hours, which just eats away from my free time. Additionally doing some sports and cleaning up other administrative stuff, somehow every single evening and most of the weekends are full. This weekend I have no social events planned, so I should find some more space there for relaxation and then hopefully renewed energy for the next week.

The last two days I worked so long, that I basically did not do anything beyond my basics (wk, anki, some listening), so nothing special happened. I will have an ITalki lesson today to practice some more conversation skills and hopefully things will calm down a bit after the weekend.

Work ist still taking a lot of time, so I don’t have a whole lot of time/energy for studying. While I thought it might get less stressful this week, I am in quite of a productive rush (thanks Gemini  ), so I take that for now, even if I study less. And then stuff like exercising is higher priority than getting reading/writing/whatever practice in.

WK is a bit of a struggle, because I do quick batches of reviews during work, but those are not at a good concentration level. At the same time, that is good, because the reviews I pass are really settled, while I trip up with those I should review a bit more. Nonetheless, low accuracy sucks

I did a bit reading here and there and moving towards the end of chapter 2, so that’s good. Getting better at dealing with dialogue, but still miss a lot of vocab. I am not looking up a whole lot, since my Anki is overloaded right now, once that calms down I will get more aggressive with adding again. (I know I could change the new cards setting, but that’s annoying  )

Soo, I’d say overall I am still quite happy with what’s going on, even if the stats might look worse than I wish

Soo, the last days I basically managed no reading etc. Somehow the weekend was over again in a blink. I am keeping up Anki and WK and some of my listening/shadowing.

My WK accuracy dropped towards the end of last week, because I just was not focused, squeezing review sessions into short intervals at work. This morning started looking better, so hopefully that will improve this week and I can reduce the review projections a bit.

Just another quick drop-in:

WK is finally looking better again, maybe it’s the end of the level effect, but my accuracy is finally moving away from 85 and towards 95 again. Apprentice count is still ~100, so I will not add more lessons for now, maybe it will start looking better towards next weekend.
With work and doing some sports I am still pretty short on time, so any reading, writing, grammar has been falling short unfortunately.
BUT, this weekend might finally bring some relief in various aspects! Due to easter there’s no work on Friday and Monday, so I will just have a tad bit more time on my hands (even though that’s a bit misleading, since a lot of it is already planned out aswell :D). And since this is the last weekend before the last deadline of my fellowship applications, this will also be the last weekend for a while on which I have to work on applications. - Basically just one more 6 hour session for the last refinement of one
Soo, I am planning to finally find some weekend study time again. And then I just need to find some space to get reading into my everyday flow again.

Today I leveled up - just below 15 days, so just dropping that here.

Otherwise I did not have much time - looking forward to the long weekend starting tomorrow!
