Hehe yeah I hope it helps.
Regarding the ー, can’t you do it by flicking the character わ to right side?

Oh my god you’ve enlightened me HOW DID I NEVER NOTICE THIS
Haha sweet, I had the exact same issue in the beginning trying that keyboard. I was thinking this is so stupid that I have to switch layout all the time. Then after I figured that out, it’s like it… makes sense that they have a quick method for it since the - is used all the time.

Hello! It’s been a week of cutting down logs and I got a say, it’s been a week of joy. I really look forward to posting every day with my progress.

Nothing burned today!
Today I learned, courtesy of @rentalfish, how to input ー with the flick method lol. I also found the QWERTY keyboard for Japanese input, which I like quite a lot.
Tomorrow I’m going to try taking on a few WK lessons. I’ve never used the lesson picker, but I feel like my pace is too slow and want to take things up a notch.
方向 - Wrote as きたこう. Nice try, me.
馬力 - Wrote as ばりょく instead of ばりき. :[
受 - Forgot the meaning. Accept these cleats to your…stool? Might need to workshop that…
仮 - Confused the reading for this with 使う, even though they’re entirely unrelated.
使う - Brain farted on this one and fell back on using the kanji reading (し)
Something I like about Renshuu is creating your own sentences and having a target meaning. For example “my boyfriend’s company is not famous”. Most of these I got wrong today due to not understanding how Japanese grammatical ownership works, although I believe I understand a bit better now.
Something I don’t like about Renshuu is I can’t seem to look at what I did today, so I’ll need to start keeping track a bit better. My Renshuu notes are the worst of the three by far, due to only working on Renshuu once a day.
I’ve learned that my understanding of the grammatical subject can be a struggle as well. There was one (I wish I wrote it down) that was pretty similar to “I am free tonight” where the subject is tonight and not I, which I didn’t understand at first.
Mouiiyo by Kocchi no Kento. Big fan of this artist, his vocal delivery is really unique in comparison to the rest of artists I’ve listened to to. Hai Yorokonde is another of Kocchi no Kento’s I like quite a bit.
See you tomorrow, thanks for stopping by! :]
力 is one of the obnoxious kanji that has a few ways to be read and you just gotta learn how they’re read in each word (目 is another offender). Luckily, most kanji are more forgiving.
One of the things that I’ve learned with consuming a lot of native content is that a lot of those short sentences that you use to learn at first are really artificial and it’s not nearly as much of a problem once you get away from them. Which doesn’t mean that you don’t have to learn it, or that it’s not a problem for right now, but a lot of my grammar woes kinda disappeared once I started seeing sentences in their more natural states, where there’s a lot of pronoun drop and so much is implied or from previous context. Which is its own struggle, but at least it’s not exactly this struggle ![]()

Found the rendaku article by Tofugu, will be reading through in hopes I can understand rendaku a bit better.
111 reviews and 20 lessons on WaniKani
6 reviews and 3 lessons on BunPro
9 reviews and 2 lessons on Renshuu
Burned quite a few items. ふじ山、車内、女、虫、耳、糸、花見、花、広げる、and 本気 will be remembered (hopefully).
In terms of wins, I’m feeling a lot more comfortable with the small amount of grammar I’ve learned. I expect it to get far more difficult since this is only the beginning, but I’ve proven to myself that I can do this.
雲 - It was only a matter of time before time I mixed 雲 with 雪, and that time is now.
村人 - Forgot that 村 was even a kanji it’s been so long since I’ve seen it. Confused it for 付.
中止 - Flubbed the meaning, just put “stop” since the middle of stop is still stop in my brain.
年内 - Annoyed with this one. I wrote “within the year”, answer is “by the end of the year”.
明かり - This is a lesson to pay attention to hiragana folks, I misread the か as た and wrote あたり.
て作る - Forgot the meaning, wrote “handicraft” instead.
止める - Wrote しめる instead of とめる ]:
どれ - I should’ve known this one, I’ve always had issues with どこ and どれ. If I had to guess, どこ is closer to the speaker while どれ isn’t close to either the speaker or listener?
写 - Confused with the reading for 写る.
新 - New word, new meaning (haha). I knew the reading, just forgot it meant “new”.
Or yesterday since I’m posting this on the 11th lol. “堕天” by Creepy Nuts is very fun, most of their songs are a blast, but this is my favorite I’ve heard so far.
Welp, that’s it! Gonna go check out a mountain today, so that should be cool. It’ll be even cooler to study on top of!
Thanks for stopping by, see you tonight! :]

Decided to start using Bunpro and Renshuu a bit more heavily when I have a chance. Added N5 vocab to Bunpro, should be a good refresher for what WaniKani has already taught me, plus a few bonus words.
20 Lessons and 122 Reviews in WaniKani
3 Grammar lessons, 3 vocab lessons, and 9 reviews in Bunpro
2 Grammar lessons and 5 reviews in Renshuu
Additionally in Renshuu I decided to try out some of the games. Shiritori, Counter Punch, and Crosswords were all pretty good knowledge checks (especially Crosswords since I haven’t learned enough words yet to solve most!)
Didn’t burn anything ]:
住人 - Absolutely goofed myself up and wrote “address” instead of “resident”. Doh.
この前 - I’m not very fond of this word meaning “the other day”. There’s nothing to do with days! Grr.
売る - Psyched myself out and wrote つる instead of うる.
必 - Forgot the reading on this one. I’m certain I didn’t hit(s) you! I swear! I don’t know, maybe that’ll stick.
考 - Not proud of this one, I see this one and panic since I KNOW it’s not 考える’s reading. Koichi would be sad.
人間 - Gotta get used to the げん instead of かん
表す - Gotta get used to this reading, it is currently weird to me lol.
KICK BACK by Kenshi Yonezu. The only song of his I’ve heard, but a fantastic one. Give it a listen if you want to need a focus boost.
Well, that’s it! See you tomorrow, thanks for stopping by! :]

To start this off, I’m looking for some music recommendations! Specifically Japanese music. My Spotify recommendations are becoming a little stale, and, while I enjoy the music on my Liked playlist, I need some new songs. I don’t care much for J-Pop, but all genres are fair game (although I really like Japanese Rock).
Today I made a potential mistake, although I think it will actually pay off in the end. I imported all of my words from WaniKani into Bunpro, which resulted in 648 reviews in Bunpro…a lot of reviews. This has led me to realize I struggle a LOT when reverse engineering meaning WITHOUT kanji and just English. As a result, I made a lot of mistakes on the ones I worked on today - I won’t be including those. Anyway, into the actual numbers!
21 Lessons and 125 Reviews in WaniKani! I have now been introduced to each radical, kanji, and vocab in level 9!
6 Lessons and 56 Reviews in Bunpro. Grammar is going well, soon I’ll pick up on vocab.
1 Lesson and 12 Reviews in Renshuu
物 - Mistook for the vocab reading, this is for the kanji.
土地 - Reading mistake, どち was my guess since my brain thinks dirt = ど.
理 - Just completely forgot, thought this word was 里
映 - Mixed the sounds around (いえ instead of えい)
度 - Forgot about this one completely. Oops.
表 - Gotta get used to the vocab reading.
~ヶ月 - Really annoying mistake. Before this one showed up, I had 一か月, then immediately had the reading for ~ヶ月, and confused the two.
要る - I answered this one so fast I don’t even remember what the mistake was.
Kantannakoto (specifically from Bullets Into The Pipe EP). This version is much better than the standalone, the additional vocals from SKY-HI add a ton of value to the song.
That’s all folks! Thanks for stopping by, see you tomorrow! :]
*rubs hands together*
It’s actually been a long time since I’ve listened to much Japanese rock that aren’t anisongs, so apologies if you’re already familiar because a lot of these will be recs from recent shows.
TK from Ling tosite sigure’s newest album, Whose Blue, starts with one of the many ending songs from Chainsaw Man, but the whole album was on repeat for me for a long time.
Vaundy also has an ending song from Chainsaw Man (called Chainsaw Blood) which is another great track. Although recently their song 再会 (saikai) from The Summer Hikaru Died I have absolutely worn threadbare.
Now, if you don’t mind older, but new to you music, can I offer you 絕彩 (Zessai) by Sugizo featuring 京 (the one without Kyo is just an instrumental, so make sure that you get the one with vocals). It’s a collaboration between two members of my favorite bands and I absolutely love this track.
Tell me how you get on with any of these.. I have many more recs where these came from ![]()
Level 9
Yeah so yesterday I was awake until 5 am, then had to leave for work this morning at 8 am, so I’m a bit tired! Being awake until 5 wasn’t really an active choice, which is why the Study Log for yesterday was pushed to today for the first ever DOUBLE FEATURE!!
As it turns out, I was wrong about not having any more lessons! I probably should’ve paid attention to the vocab count…as I hadn’t even unlocked all Kanji until now!
9 Lessons and 139 Reviews in WaniKani on 10/13
12 Reviews in Bunpro on 10/13
1 Lesson and 3 Reviews in Renshuu on 10/13
2 Lessons and 74 Reviews in WaniKani on 10/14 (I’m not sure why my review numbers were so drastically different between today and yesterday)
14 Reviews in Bunpro (Had to hold off on lessons for today due to how busy work was)
0 Reviews in Renshuu :[ Just didn’t have time, unfortunately…
9 more items off of the Burned Items list. 左 (kanji), 他、月見、二百、赤、赤ちゃん、一本気、年、and 足, you will hopefully be remembered fondly.
The only notable win is that I made really big headway on my notes yesterday. I still have a lot to make up for on previous levels (1-8), but I’m pretty happy with the foundation I’ve set up for 9.
I would love to tell you the mistakes I made for 10/13, but I can’t. I’m also almost entirely sure the mistakes WaniKani are showing for today are incorrect, as I definitely messed up more than twice.
From now on, I’ll keep track of my mistakes throughout the day to keep an accurate count. Sorry, folks!
Yeah I’ll drop two songs today. First, Sukiraism by frederic. I really vibe with this song, big fan of what I can only call “stuttering” after the chorus (そそそそ, for example). There’s something about it I love.
Second, MIRROR TUNE by ZUTOMAYO. This song is really fun, the sound effects in the background are very fitting and reminiscent of Space Crush by Tasturo Yamashita. It gets kind of hectic by the time the last chorus comes around, but it’s still a great piece of music.
Well, that’s all! Thanks for stopping by the very first DOUBLE FEATURE, I’ll see you tomorrow! :]
I’ll be sure to listen to these at work tomorrow. All of these are brand new artists to me, so I’m quite excited to take a listen. Thanks for the recommendations!
Level 9?
Made it to level 10 yesterday, although I haven’t squared away all of my level 9 vocab so I’ll at least get that started before pursuing level 10’s radicals and kanji.
94 Reviews and 3 Lessons in WaniKani
16 Reviews and 3 Lessons in Bunpro
15 Reviews and 1 Lesson in Renshuu
;-; Nothing burned… ;-;
Got Renshuu back into my practice rotation. Another busy day, so I was happy to be able to study with all three programs.
画像 - Stupid mistake is stupid. For some reason in my brain I thought image + image = video. That math does not check out.
以外 - Ugh. I ALWAYS just write “Other” instead of OTHER THAN.
教え - Reading mistake, wrote うしえ instead of おしえ.
発表 - Reading mistake, write はつぴょう instead of はっぴょう.
心強い - Reading mistake. Used the wrong form of しん instead of こころ, AND missed the rendaku on づよい.
出身 - Meaning mistake, just completely forgot what this one meant.
覀 - Mistook for the net radical instead.
作者 - Reading mistake, wrote つくしゃ instead of さくしゃ.
Yeah I’m going to start throwing in Bunpro and Renshuu errors too.
よ (emphasis sentence ender) - In the sentence it wasn’t apparent to me that the information in the sentence was supposed to be emphasized or was new information to the listener. I feel like that’s my biggest issue with this, it requires context to be inferable, yet neither Bunpro or Renshuu apply a situation preceding the sentence. Renshuu is easier to infer usage of due to how you build sentences (or phrases in some cases) instead of fill-in-the-blank style like Bunpro (which just says Emphatic, Polite). I didn’t even know what “emphatic” meant until now!
の (possession) - A really strange sentence to me popped up in Renshuu yesterday that was basically “I am my boyfriend’s significant other” which might translate to ”私は恋人の大切な人です。” (I don’t remember the exact kanji used for significant other “大切な人” so I used Jisho to find the one that looked the most familiar). The issue I was having with this sentence isn’t really the の, but the は. I understand that the speaker is a subject but are they the subject? They must be since that’s what Renshuu says, but the boyfriend being the primary subject makes a little more sense to me - hopefully I will make a bit more understanding of this sooner rather than later.
Thanks to @shitsurei , 再会 by Vaundy was my jam yesterday. Played it at least 10 times in a row. Spectacular song.
Well, that’s it! Made it to level 10, going to try to pick up the pace a little bit by accelerating my lesson intake each day (probably 25 instead of 15 and feeling it out from there).
Thanks for stopping by! See you tomorrow (or tonight I guess, depends on when I post lol)! :]
Level 9?
I believe I’ve finished being introduced to my level 9 vocab as I have guru’d all Kanji. So level 10 begins tomorrow!
29 Lessons and 54 Reviews in WaniKani
3 Lessons and 16 Reviews in Bunpro
12 Lessons and 18 Reviews in Renshuu
白人 was the only vocab burned today. It will be remembered, hopefully.
No major wins, but a goal. In order to clean up Bunpro, I’ll be doing 50 vocab reviews every day. I won’t be documenting any mistakes due to the sheer quantity and, since Bunpro teaches vocab differently, I will make many mistakes.
Speaking of mistakes…
廾 (radical) - Forgot this one’s name COMPLETELY. Oops!
決定 - Reading mistake, wrote けてい instead of けってい.
丁度 - Meaning mistake. Had no clue what a street degree could mean. Street smarts! Street smarts = exactly, I guess. My brain will make it work.
返事 - Reading mistake as I confused 返 for 送, so I wrote そうじ.
Renshuu was especially tough today. Where 何, どれ, and だこ go in the sentence just hasn’t clicked yet in my brain.
上書きしちゃった by natori and Tatsuya Kitani is today’s jam and it’s a real shame it took me this long to find natori. Give it a listen, their voices complement one another very nicely.
That’s it! Thanks for stopping by, see you tomorrow for the start of level 10! :]
Yay I’m so glad you liked it! Now I need to go listen to it again, lol
Level 10
The initial lesson plan of 30 didn’t really go according to plan. Really busy day at work, so my studying schedule (several times throughout the work day) didn’t pan out and I had to cram all the info at the end of the day. Bummer!
11 Lessons and 96 Reviews in WaniKani - Pretty big departure from the goal of 30 lessons. I’ll do my best to reach that goal tomorrow (I can assure you, it’s already a busy day)!
No lessons or reviews in Bunpro - Somehow just completely forgot about Bunpro. I did Renshuu, though.
1 Lesson and 18 Reviews in Renshuu
Burned Items for the day: 正 (kanji), 玉 (kanji), 一日, as well as the radicals for Tsunami, Middle, and Coffin.
The only win worth mentioning is that I did all of my reviews in WaniKani today. A ton of work today and cramming is Not ideal, takes me out of the mental schedule completely.
立場 - Meaning mistake, just completely forgot what this meant!
あそこ - Meaning mistake, this one is only over there, あれ is that over there.
道具 - Meaning mistake, somehow confused this for 通り. Not sure how I managed that.
活用 - Reading mistake, typo’d かつ as けつ.
村 - Welp. This is embarrassing! Every time I see 村 I immediately jump to 付. I need to slow down and look at the kanji a little more closely.
貝 - Reading mistake, mistook for 買. Curses!
上る - Meaning mistake, definitely thought “to rise” would work. Spoiler: it doesn’t.
決定 - Meaning mistake, got this confused for 予定 for a second too long.
使う - Reading mistake, confused the reading for 表す.
保つ - Maybe I’d remember this one if I liked tomatoes more. I like tomato sauce a lot…つ could be a new-fangled way to shorten sauce, maybe?
Still struggling with question noun placement (where, what, etc). Slowly piecing things together, but a real head-scratcher sometimes.
“Inochi no Tabekata” by Eve is a real standout song of his. He’s exceptional at creating high energy songs with fantastic vocal performances.
Since I’ve started ending with a few thoughts at the end, I decided to staple that on to the heading, too. Now you won’t be spooked when I stop talking about music! I want to add another section to these which incorporates writing sentences every day, and maybe getting some feedback from folks if they feel inclined to provide it. I need better practice at grammar, especially early on, and this feels like a good way to do it. It’ll end up between "Mistakes Made” and “Jam of the Day”.
That’s it! Thanks for stopping by, see you tomorrow! :]
Edit: Fixed date in post header
Level 10
So I ended up doing 20 lessons instead of 30…but almost to that target!
20 Lessons and 60 Reviews in WaniKani
3 Lessons and 10 Reviews in Bunpro
16 Reviews in Renshuu
Nothing burned :[
The biggest win for today is that I feel like I’m remembering my studies a bit better. Taking notes is helpful, the extra reinforcement of readings from Bunpro and Renshuu seems to also be helpful. I haven’t mentioned it, but conjugating う-verbs has been a bit of a struggle and I’m starting to feel more confident in it.
実験 - Reading mistake, although I think I finally understand what seems to be a rule of thumb: if つ is in the middle of two kanji it becomes っ. I’m sure there are plenty of examples that prove this wrong as there are with all rules of language, but it seems to be fairly true so far.
大気 - It’s been so long since I’ve seen this word lol. Just flubbed the reading, thought it was だいき instead of たいき.
代わる - Meaning mistake, got this mixed up for “to replace”.
Still struggling with the placement of question nouns. Slowly but surely.
I haven’t really thought through how I’m going to tackle this sentence, so I guess I’ll set a precedent. The goal is to write a sentence that is grammatically correct. I’ll write a “target meaning” for the sentence and hope I at least get close!
Today’s target meaning: “I am a large man". Humble beginnings, no verbs other than です, should hopefully be easy.
”私は大きい男です。”
I think this works. Maybe there’s other vocab that would be more commonly used for referring specifically to the size of a person, I’m unsure.
“カウキヲヤメク” (かうきをやめく) by 美波 (みなみ). This song is a fantastic example of a “raw performance”. Every time this song shows up in my playlist it gets a listen. If you want to hear someone putting their all into a performance, lend your ear to this song.
Sorry this one came out so late in the day, been very busy the past few days. I look forward to posting these every day, I love interacting with other learners.
Thanks for stopping by! I’ll see you tomorrow! :]
Level 10
If you thought the last double feature was anything special, maybe you’ll like this one too! I was going to post on time yesterday, but got a bit of bad news that kind of left me motivationally paralyzed the whole day. Back on my feet today, so hopefully it won’t keep me too down!
For the 19th:
25 Lessons and 182 Reviews in WaniKani
3 Lessons, 15 Grammar Reviews, and 23 Vocab Reviews in Bunpro
1 Lesson and 9 Reviews in Renshuu
For the 20th:
0 Lessons and 124 Reviews on WaniKani
That’s it, sadly :[
In terms of Burned Items, I’ve now said farewell to 16 over the 19th and the 20th! Of the 16, 6 were radicals (Wolverine, West, Gold, Self, Rain, and Axe), 6 were vocab (テレビ、すみません、竹の子、人生、出る、五百), and the remaining 4 were kanji (号、回、体、交).
Wins - the 19th was easily the most reviews I’ve done in a single day in a while and I stayed pretty consistent on my accuracy (high 80%-low 90%). I also made some headway on that Bunpro vocab stack…slowly but surely!
Just like last DOUBLE FEATURE, the mistakes weren’t very well kept track of (and given my lateness in posting, a lot of mistakes have rolled over). Here’s what I’ve got, though.
映る - Reading mistake. I’ve been really getting trapped on this one, I just can’t seem to grasp it.
人工 - Meaning mistake. 人口 is the one I Mistook this for. Darn homophones!
仮 - Reading mistake. Just forgot this one entirely.
予 - Reading mistake. Got it confused for 了.
美人 - Reading mistake. Honestly can’t remember what I messed up.
The amount of mistakes I saw was 22 and one point and this is only 5. Sorry gang!
I should have two since I missed a day, but I’ll do just the one.
Target sentence: “That cat over there is asleep on the bed.”
Note: I haven’t learned some of these vocab yet, so I’m using Jisho to help me find words to use!
“あれは猫が寝付きです” → Should be “that cat over there is asleep”
“ベッド上” → Should be “on top of the bed”
Now the tricky part is combining them…
“あれは猫っがベッド上の寝つきです。“ might be right. Who knows? Maybe you do!
“Re:Re:” by ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION is real good. Maybe I’m saying that because I just started watching Erased, maybe I’m saying that because I listened to it before watching Erased. You decide!
”Luna say maybe” by 美波、月村手毬、初星学園 is an absolute delight. Like I said about 美波 before, she really showcases a raw, powerful sound with her vocal performances and this is no different.
That’s it folks! Thanks for checking in, sorry for missing a day, I’ll be back tomorrow! See you then. :]
Edit: Messed up the date again lol
Level 10
A little bit better today, but not as many lessons as I’d like.
15 Lessons and 96 Reviews in WaniKani
3 Lessons and 9 Reviews in Bunpro
1 Lesson and 27 Reviews in Renshuu
Nothing burned :[
I was able to recover today in comparison to yesterday, so I’ll take the win. Again, my apologies for such a late study log, but free time has been lacking, unfortunately.
宝石 - Forgot the ほう reading for 宝.
北国 - Forgot the くに reading for 国, additionally forgot the rendaku ぐに.
買う - Meaning mistake, got it confused with 使う.
声 - Just absolutely did not recognize this kanji…whoops.
運 - I’ll wrap my head around this reading eventually. I’ve got the meaning down, but うん isn’t sticking quite yet.
欠ける - I was getting this one pretty consistently…and then I stopped doing that.
歌 - Reading mistake, I keep getting this one tossed up with the reading of 葉 (は).
ヒミツ by POLKADOT STINGRAY is really fun, the lyrics are really chaotic as are the instrumentals. Just a really solid listen.
No sentence today! I’ll think two up tomorrow to make up for it.
Thanks for stopping by, sorry for the short log. See you tomorrow! :]
Happy to hear you’re doing better. Sometimes studies have to take a back seat, and that’s always ok. ![]()
