Comment here if you want WaniKani to add 5 more levels with the remaining Joyo kanji

I am not far along (level 8) and maybe I might change my mind after level 30 or so but I always wonder why they dont just complete all Joyo kanjis. So yes, at this point, I agree that adding a few levels would be fine.

Just to make it available and add value, sure, but it should be separate from the 60 primary levels. I think most people are fine with level 60, and additional levels should probably be in their own category.

Most people, upon reaching level 60, already have acquired a vocabulary and kanji list well beyond what’s already offered on WK due to exposure with native materials, and that’s kind of the intended nature of the program. It’s assumed and built into the mechanics of WK that it won’t be your only source of learning.

Regarding the “do you really need the extra levels?” question: everyone has their own learning style and preferences. If a person is directly seeking a method to learn jp, then that’s valid in and of itself. It may seem unnecessary or inefficient to you, but if it motivates someone else to do it and they enjoy it, then that’s really all that matters.

I’ve no doubt that by the time I’m level 60, I could just learn the extra kanji through self-study, but given how much I love and have come accustomed to the WK approach, I will most likely seek out the closest resource similar to that. As such, I’m sure there are some users that may develop a script by then, or perhaps have built a “lvl 61” anki deck that looks and works just like WK, so I’m not too worried. I would like it if WK themselves would implement it, however.

Reading through this thread reminded me why I don’t ask people for advice on learning Japanese, lol. So many people here saying what’s the “right” way or the “wrong” way. Before I joined WaniKani a couple years back, I saw people say that WK was the wrong way and that I’d be better off learning Japanese through other methods. But I started WK and since then have started other programs as well and began consuming media in Japanese on my own without thinking “is this the right way or wrong way to do this?”

It’s especially weird, imo, to see people who went through WK then say no to more WK. Nobody’s forcing you to learn more levels. All you’re doing by saying “no, there shouldn’t be more,” is making it so others might not have the opportunity to learn more, and I’m not sure why you’d want that.

So yeah, add more levels, why not, there’s no downside to it.

I am commenting but I don’t want them to add more. I think the amount of people who finish is rare enough as is and like others have stated once you get there you don’t need hand holding for kanji anymore. Like my hope is to be done with this site and never look back.

I’d be fine with more levels as it would cut down study time for me.

I don’t actually care at all but if they were going to add them, why not just add 2 - 3 kanji to each existing level

Yes, I want them to, because it’d be more thorough, and wk uses the best method i’ve encountered so far.
I wish there was a wk for other things, too…

Having WK cover all Joyo kanji would certainly be nice, and would be a great selling point as well. Personally I just find it a little ridiculous that I’m seeing shit like 覗く and 頷くon every page when reading books and somehow they aren’t on here.

Given that you’re level 60, I’m sure shooting them an email to tell them that will be taken seriously! The more people who let them know, the more likely it will happen

Yeah, they can be added because of “selling point” (of a Joyo / N1 learning resource)

In my opinion, as Wanikani is pretty reading-focused, any Kanji with both Kun and On readings used can easily be added, even if it is not in Joyo list. Otherwise, Kanji shared between several seemingly-unrelated vocabularies.

The number of radicals decreased at around level 43, so it can be useful to introduce more radicals there too. (Perhaps from omk3’s post.)

One-off Kanji are simply just a hardship of higher level readers, that can easily be solved – looking up, then make some mnemonics based on visuals, if necessary.

In other words, I am considering this as a learning “hint”, whether Wanikani would really implement these or not.

i think it might actually be better to learn them the old way since youd prob would learn more alongside it when u get to that level.

Good luck with that

Comment here if you want WaniKani to continue to level 1500 so you can cover aaaaaall the kanji.

Thank you so much!

For me is just funny to see how:

There’s only one kanji left (yes… Just one), not on WK to have the complete Joyo Level 6: 蚕 (kaiko, or Silkworm)

There are just fifteen kanji remaining to have the complete set of “Kanji by frequency from 1001 to 1500”… I imagine those could be encountered easily un the wild (those in green)

I think including these, perhaps dispersed in later levels (just one more kanji for each Lvl from 45 to 60), can greatly improve interest on WK in general. As Mr. polv said, it could be a good selling point.

I don’t think anyone is going, “oh, it’s missing 15 kanji, otherwise I’d subscribe”
