Bugged Account? No new lessons on second day?

Hi there, I think my account might be bugged. I’m only on my second day of wanikani but I didn’t get any lessons today. I finished all my reviews but then nothing came up. I did all my available lessons and reviews yesterday.

You unlock new items by reaching Guru I (SRS 5) on items you have previously learned. You advance in SRS by reviewing your previous items correctly. Each item takes about 3 days to reach Guru I, assuming you don’t make any mistakes or wait additional time after the item reappears.

Welcome and enjoy the journey.

So I will only get lessons every 3 days?

Not necessarily, you’ll get new lessons roughly 3 days after you do any Radicals/Kanji, or when you level up. Assuming you do lessons immediately when they become available and don’t make any mistakes. Tofugu wrote an article on it that explains it pretty well.

At this stage in the process, you’ve found yourself waiting around between reviews and lessons because you’ve only got a handful of items in your review queue. By the time you’ve levelled up a few times, you’ll find you have lessons and reviews available almost constantly. Take this time to ease yourself into the process gently, and you’ll have enough to keep you busy before too long. :slightly_smiling_face:

Think of getting a correct answer as setting a timer, a timer which signifies the next time it’ll be available for review.

  • Introducing an item sets a ~3 hour timer.
  • If you get that correct, then it sets a ~7 hour timer.
  • If you get that correct, then it sets a ~12 hour timer.
  • Then 1 day, 2 days, Week, Month, Etc. Etc. (not sure if exact, but you get the gist)

Right now you’re in that zone where you have very few items, and all of them are in that timer-state waiting to be available for next review. If you look at the review forecast on the right side of the homepage, you can see when they will show up again next.

If you’re consistent and quick with doing reviews (and getting them correct) then in 3 or 4 days it will reach “guru” status on an item. Guru-ing a Radical unlocks Kanji using them. Guru-ing a Kanji unlocks vocabulary using those.

Guru enough Kanji per level (progress bar on home page), and you’ll level up and unlock a new batch of radicals, kanji, and vocabulary. The cycle continues from level 1-60. Early days of WK are very light, but before you know it there will effectively always be reviews pouring in on an hourly (or close to) basis, and unless you want to absorb dozens upon dozens of new words and content at a time- you’ll effectively always have new content to introduce at your leisure.

No bugs here, just deliberate spacing as to make sure your engagement and ability to recall is long-lasting. Confusing at first, but you’ll get comfortable with it quick.

If you’re itching to learn the language while you wait, I recommend getting started with a little grammar. Genki and Tokini Andy’s videos are a popular choice, as is Bunpro, and Tae Kim’s guide is free.

On top of those, do some reading as well. Tadoku and NHK Easy are some of the most commonly used free sources.

I second using the extra time to learn some grammar. Things start out slow on WK, but after a few levels they’ll start ramping up.

Take advantage of the extra time you have now to get some grammar comprehension so you can understand the sample sentences and eventually join book clubs.
