Wow you’re breezing through the story at a nice pace now!
Yeah Yotsuba being an adorable child like always. Man I just love her.
You got it already but I think a breakdown might help. We go from the back
初めて 見たよ → The first time seen!
What was the first time seen; it was
頭(を)打つ ヤツ なんて → (Such a thing as) guy/gal who hits the head. なんて is hard to translate but you can think of it as negative exclamation thing here. I substituted the (such a thing as) for it.
ほんとに → Really/Truly.
All in all something along the lines of:
Really/Truly, it’s the first time I’ve seen (such a thing as) a gal who hits her head.
Which is basically 1to1 what you wrote in your translation. The deepl translation is making a more liberal translation and taking “the first time seen” to “never seen” but gets the point across too.
What I find funny the 頭を打つやつ is not specifying which head is hit. It’s just context that it is her own head she hit XD
It did help, thanks It didn’t seem that logical before the breakdown even tho I had all the elements. I think my expectations for what one says to a child after they hurt themselves contributed to my confusion (I expected to break it down into something like “You really hit your head huh, let me look at that first” or something) .
To be fair seeing how yotsuba behaves normally and how unphased she seems by hitting her head I can’t fault him much. I still distinctly remember her climbing up a street light pole to imitate being a セミ in the first chapter o_O. And don’t get me started on her first time on the ブランコ ^^.
I don’t have much to say beyond noting that I’m irresponsibility prioritizing Japanese above uni stuff at the moment so I should probably get back on that horse again and slow down a little when it comes to Japanese:/
よつばと！vol1, cha6, 174-179 🍀
——— 174 ———
It’s really hot again today huh
But it’s nice because there’s wind
——— 175 ———
Why not use the air conditioner
It’s not necessary, (it’s expensive)
Besides, with the window open the “voices” of the cicadas are audible too
And also there’s the wind chimes…… it’s what summer is all about
——— 176 ———
Du you like cicadas!?
Well, they’re insects right
I like them!!
Is that right, that’s good then, cicadas
Thanks for the meal
——— 177 ———
Let’s go Ena!!
Wha? Where to?
I don’t know how to go about catching cicadas?
That’s alright, I know what to do
——— 178 ———
Ah, Jumbo’s car!!
——— 179 ———
(We’re) catching cicadas!!
… catching cicadas?
Where are you going to catch them?
…… I don’t know
What about bug catching nets and and a basket?
I’m not bringing it (don’t have it)!
Heh, this kid speaks as though she knows (anything)
Thanks for checking in, that’s nice of you:) I’m doing okay (ish). I’m still not entirely recovered and I have exams coming up fast and lasting for over a month so I ended up dropping the read-every-day challenge. I would have made an announcement in the thread but the decision came in the form of a very gradual lowering of ambition that only recently reached zero:/
My Japanese studies at the moment consists of only Wanikani (10 lessons + reviews) and Anki (only reviews, no new cards). Other than that I spend 10-11 hours each day studying for my exams:p
I’ll be back at it after the ninth of June, so I’ll see you then I hope
Good to hear, mostly. I figured it was something like that since you also mention being busy, but because the timing was like that I figured I should make sure. There’s a bit of a bad sickness out there, so I’ve heard .
Best of luck with the exams, and hey, good job managing to not totally drop the language learning.
Small update: I’m mostly focused on my exams right now and my wanikani accuracy suddenly dropped recently from the 90s to the 70s, upping my leeches from my normal 10+ range to 30+ … So I’ve slowed lessons down to 5 per day until I get a handle on that.
I wouldn’t have felt like updating now if I didn’t also experience a tiny victory just now though. I’ve been patiently waiting for my enlightened items to reach a point where they would show up with a percentage in this graphic:
and they finaly did so just now It’s nice how motivating these little user script widgets can be. Anyway, I’ll be back to regular updates with translation attempts after the ninth of June (ah, I see I said so in my last post as well, oh well)
Thank you for checking in Shannon-8さん I feel like my exams went well enough, grade-wise so far I’ve gotten an A, a B, and a C, in that order so I guess the remaing grade should be a D?
My jp studies are going well as well, I’m studying hard and I’m working hard so at the end of the day I haven’t been finding the time to really write any updates to my study log even though I’ve been meaning to:p In fact I was aiming to write an update yesterday, then I postponed it to today, but I still have a lot to do (gardening and housework at my mom’s ) so instead I’ll see if I can find the time tomorrow
I guess I’ll write up a small status update while I’m here tho:)
Currently I am and will be working full time until the start of the autumn semester, so on workdays between work and three SRSs (WK, anki, and Bunpro), + listening and a small bit of reading, I don’t really have time for any other projects. So anything else is relegated to days off from work, after I’ve studied jp for a few hours. But my work isn’t mentally draining so it feels sort of sustainable even though I’m not finding as much time for a lot of things as I would like (jp related and not).
I restarted Bunpro a couple weeks ago after my last exam, so now I’m almost halfway through N5 again. I’ll probably level up here on WK on monday for a 8 day level which is a fun pace but probably won’t be as fun when the enlightened and burn reviews start showing up during the school year
