Ye that’s illegal

Hi Raionus, maybe we could use Aozora bunko source for some learners who want to read literature or are more advance to read on your website. Most of them are out of copyrighte term or somehow they make them available on websites.

Yeah, it’s a good idea. It’d be good to have some free resources as well, even if they’re difficult.

3 small points you may not care about rn:

  • Under ‘Reviews’ on the Usage Guide page, there is a typo: “Hokeys”
  • When registering, there is no asterisk to indicate that an email address is required
  • From the preview of the review system, it looks like the bar saying “reading” or “meaning” will be black when asking for meaning; my mind was recently blown when I realised that WK makes the bar white when asking for meaning, and it would be really awesome if that subconscious connection were maintained here too!

I’m not certain, but as those threads are housed in Campfire, which is the only part of the forums not publicly visible, I imagine this might at least look kind of weird to users not on WK. I think it would be cool if explained though, so that WK users would know where to look, or at least to look (and others might be encouraged to sign up  ).

Gottem’

It might be impossible to add the book club stuff that already exists. In the future though, I could probably make lists under the condition that the members would put the discussions in a public section of the forum (like the Japanese forums).

Anyway I haven’t slept in 24 hours so I’m gonna hit the hay, and then come back tomorrow to see what broke.

The tool looks great!

I do have one problem, though:
No matter how many times I complete this lesson, it still shows as “not done”.

I have done some lessons from the website, and they all moved to review afterwards, but this one just seems to bounce back. I wonder if it’s because I have put a Japanese definition?

These aren't necessarily criticisms, it's just my thoughts as I go so you get the insight of a new user.
  1. Love the name, also the logo
  2. I clicked this thinking it would let me edit my profile
    image
  3. Filler widget is a bit confusing. Why is it there?
    image
  4. Why the asterixis?
    image
  5. I just filled out my profile… no?
  6. I like the Things To Do and such, it looks nice and is relevant.
  7. I thought clicking this would open the menu, not close it
  8. Title list page looks amazing
  9. What does this mean?
    image
  10. There isn’t an obvious way to navigate back to the title list after opening the page for a book.
  11. Would be nice if we could enter our WK API key so you could keep track of our level automagically.
  12. Is there a way to add words from a title all at once?
  13. What does this number mean?
    image
  14. It’s not clear that you have to click the items to add them to queue
    image
  15. White on grey is kind of hard to read
  16. I go to review overview when finishing a lesson
    image
  17. As someone else mentioned I can’t complete the lesson for the first item in the list.
  18. Is there a way to request books or maybe even donate books to be analysed?

Overall it’s great and I could see myself paying for it once finished.

I’ve taken a look at the word on your account. According to the database you’ve answers it wrong/right 0 times, so I image it must be throwing an error during the lesson. Press control + I and go into the console tab (if you’re on chrome). I have a lot of logs that will probably help.

In any case, I reproduced the exact word on my account and it leveled up just fine.

I get the same problem

Okay, I’ll take a look. I didn’t need sleep anyway :^). Can you tell me what book you got it from? I wanna see if I can reproduce it from the beginning.

It’s the… Biblia one? I think that was the name. I tried some other words and they work just fine.

edit: @Raionus I trashed that word and tried again. Did the lesson for the first word in the list and got the same problem. I then did a lesson with the first two words in the list, and both went through. So I suspect it’s only an issue when you do one word and it’s the first in the list.

edit2: Also, I got 掲載, a WK level 37 item, in the vocab list despite inputting that I am level 37. I just did the lesson for that item earlier today, actually.

Yeah it checks if the items less than your wanikani level rather than less than or equal to. I’ll change that tonight.

Yeah, I can’t reproduce this on the admin account. I even cleared all my lessons to make sure that it wasn’t an issue with new words. I’ll try making a normal account and see what happens.

@Kumirei
How fast is your internet? It looks like in Kumirei’s video a request was never sent out in time to change the word’s SRS level. There’s a two second window in between when the last question is answered and when the browser window redirects. Do you think it might be redirecting too quickly?

I don’t think this is actually the issue, but I still gotta ask.

Edit: I’m gonna try to force the redirect to wait until it gets a pingback from the server. If speed’s the problem that will fix it. I’ll roll it out at midnight.

*notices brilliant resource *

2 noob questions : What does the number 30 next to ‘ignore’ stand for? And can only 46 words be displayed on the vocab list at a time?

I was also confused by this, but from the Usage Guide, it appears that it means the item gets marked as ‘known’ for thirty days, after which it appears again (if you mark an item as ‘trash’ it never appears again).

It’ll retrieve two hundred rows of definitions at a time. How many words that is depends on how many definitions the words feel like having.

Signed the hell up! I have my copy of Harry Potter next to me so I’m excited to get going with that vocab list.

Oh no way! I just work myself through the first Harry Potter book in Japanese. This looks really great, I’ll give it a try.

Maintenance is done and the site’s back online.

Update 4/30:

New Titles Available

Each with hella lazy descriptions.

Changes

  • SRS now waits until it gets a server response on the last review/lesson before navigating away from the page. This may fix @Nath and @Kumirei’s lesson issue.
  • Server now rechecks available lessons/reviews after any item is reviewed on the SRS
  • Account drop down in the navigation is not a button anymore. Thanks @kumirei.
  • Creating a new item in the lessons menu now has placeholder text instead of default values (and, yes, it’s still incredibly ugly).
  • Can now use ~, 1, or 2 to add a new definition during reviews.

Up Next:

  • Use API keys instead of manually filling out WK level in preferences menu.
  • Get something from Aozora (as in, something you can read without purchasing).
