Maybe? Probably? My point is simply it’s a hard language, hard for many aspects also for people that use it everyday since they are born. A language that has books hard to be understood also by adults with higher education. I was trying to point at the generic difficulty of the language, not discuss or give an example about the amount of kanji needed to read

Outside of that, I found the chapter enjoyable xD I was really glad they were able to get him to his destination on time
…I don’t dislike the guy as a character. I’d like to see him again. I’d just also be really happy if he could learn the concept of personal boundaries.
The descriptive/exposition stuff was kind of tough, but I feel like I at least got the gist of most of it. Except for the thing seanblue mentioned about Alicia, which I realize now that I definitely misunderstood while I was reading. So maybe I didn’t really get it and I just think I did xD (This is my constant paranoia whenever I don’t have an English translation to check against tbh, especially with those long sentences).
There was a very interesting article I read years ago about how the Joyo list come to exist and how it contains a significant amount of uncommon kanji and omits others that are used commonly in everyday life. I’ll try to find it and maybe post it here.

Who am I kidding? Level 60 still feels a long way away…
They have little motivation to make more levels unfortunately. So few people make it to level 60 (relative to how many try the site) that it’s probably much more profitable to make the site more appealing to new users instead.
We should just all get to level 60 and then ask.

I’m curious actually to know how much independent you become once you get to level 60.
Years ago, when my english was way worse (if it’s possible 
), I realised at some point that even if I didn’t know all of the words I was presented (ie. while reading a novel) I would still feel comfortable since my brain would fill in the gaps and guess what was missing thank to the context. Given time the meanings I was missing before would stick in my head even without the use of a vocabulary.
TL;DR I know I’ll not be able to pick up a random novel at level 60 and understand everything, but I’m curious what I’ll be able to read and understand without too much stress.

Well, yeah, I’m a bit subjective about the whole ordeal. In general/ in real life, I would find it extremely uncomfortable.
As it is, I don’t mind it so much since seeing him appear in front of me would make me go “YES HI HELLO HI HOW ARE YOU DOING HELLO HI YES?”

Not related to WK, but in my case, I was fine with manga around the time I got the N3, and fine with novels when I was almost (but not quite) N1. So a solid N2, I would say.
Maybe just because there are less questions?
I quite like the “extra information” aspect. Like with that last narration box on page 185, in English we’d have to say “Here in Neo Venezia”, but in Japanese, you can just write them on top of each other.

But I’m also kind of pretty “don’t touch me” in real life. …In fact, I think I actually shouted that at a friend once when I was tired and irritable and they kept touching me when I was in no mood xD As I was reading, I just imagined some stranger doing that to me on the train, and I’m like…no. Nope. 
I don’t care how pretty you are, if I don’t know you, really just don’t randomly touch me. Especially don’t just randomly grab me. If I were Akari, I probably would’ve smacked his hand away as a reflex and felt zero sympathy. Clearly I am not Akari. xD

I’m a bit confused with the plethora of 半人前. Is it three separate sentences, effectively? → “You’re a trainee. It’s because you’re a trainee. It’s a black gondola for trainees.” ?

Is that first word from つく？And if so, which つく? Because none of them really seem to mean “wear”… Or maybe it isn’t referring to his clothing?

I got a bit lost in there too, but remember the trick is that Japanese grammar tends to work in reverse. I also reckon there’s a pair of subordinate clauses in there too. I.e. all of 半人前の黒いゴンドラ which contains 半人前による半人前のため. So “A trainee’s black gondola, for trainees according to trainees”. Or something.
Not completely sure if it’s supposed to make sense…
Maybe 就く = to study (under teacher); to be an apprentice?
Or ついて as an expression on its own?
It’s “といっても” “even saying I’m a salamander, I’m still a trainee”. I assume his clothes (like the black gondola for Akari) are a sign of that status (but it’s not explicit)
@Belthazar already replied, but I just wanted to add that the repetition is for comedic effect. Laying it thick that she is just a trainee.

Nooooooope. I was torn between being horrified and snorting at his crouching pose. It was bad enough to begin with, but it was even weirder (in so many ways) and less funny to boot when he grabbed both bits of hair.
I have to admit though, I find Akari’s hairstyle weeeeeeeeeeeird.
