I just think it’d be really cool and useful if we had the option to take some kind of extra study esque review on only specific radicals/kanji/vocab level by level. Maybe even the ability to take a quiz on an entire level. This would be really helpful to make sure I’m not forgetting anything. If you guys think it might hurt memory retention from excessive/preemptive reviewing, make lock this sort of feature to only burned items?
I also think a feature where you could sort levels based on separation between verbs and other stuff or something like would also be very helpful, I mainly just want some sort of easy and efficient way to separate all the Godan and Ichidan verbs so I can have them all each in one place. It would just make it so much easier for me to memorize the conjugation so I can apply them properly in at least basic sentences without getting confused.
Well as you say, it disrupts the SRS-scheme though you really don’t have to adhere to it slavishly for it to still work. Still, the product they’ve made so far works well and this might complicate the evaluation of it quite a bit. (ignoring your suggestion for just burnt items as that’s already an option on WK with the extra study feature).
But, all of this said, it’s also probably about these extra options already existing as scripts to add to the functionality of vanilla WK, and so, there is little incentive to add it as a native feature. (the team seem to be working on adding more content to the lessons presently)
If you haven’t found your way over to the Third party apps sub-forum I think you should take a visit and see what you can find. Another tip is to visit the Lv 60s celebration forum and check out lv 60 users’ posts as they often post stats and which scripts they’ve relied on to help their studies with WK (like with mine). Just take a look and see if there is anything you in particular think would be helpful for your study methods and preferences!
I’m not sure if there’s a script for this, but now that you mention it, I have thought before that it’d be cool to see a script that allowed quizzing by radical. I have a heck of a time with the shelf kanji: 組/祖/租/阻/粗/沮/姐/徂/咀/柤/詛. I know the last half of these aren’t even in WaniKani, but still.
I wrote [Self-Study Quiz] and [Self-Study Hide Info] specifically for this purpose. With both installed, you can go to the level pages and either manually quiz yourself by hiding the English part (or Japanese if you want to do reverse-reviews). Or, click on the Quiz button next to a level’s Radicals, Kanji, or Vocab, and it will quiz you on those.
If you review your levels regularly, it’s not going to interfere with the SRS. Generally, more study is almost always good. It’s only bad if you just “study right before the test” and never any other time.
I use both the self-study user script above when I’m on my desktop (thanks @rfindley!!) and the self study feature on Flaming Durtles for android. For both, you can customize which radicals, kanji, vocab you want to be quizzed in whether it’s only kanji or vocab you want or for certain levels or SRS stages. Both have come in very handy for me when I want to additional reviews beyond the extra study that WK offers.
