A Harta-ful of Manga: Let's Read a Magazine Together ❣

My first issue summary post! Yay! It’s very stream-of-consciousness style on account of being basically a reading log, but I hope folks find something of use or interest in it anyway. Here goes!

Issue #75

The cover of this one did not appeal to me at all, but I read the cover story anyway and okay, that last page is kind of cute.

Series Debuts

ライカの星 by 吉田真百合 (よしだまゆり)

Day 1, title page read + first page skimmed

Right off the bat, I learn the word 復讐劇 (revenge tragedy, which by the way also taught me that the kanji look-up by drawing function in my dictionary app on my phone is quite good!). But I’m confused because Laika is such a cute dog! And the way that whole first line reads doesn’t seem like it’s really going to be a revenge tragedy. Maybe the artist is doing that on purpose so they can destroy me (emotionally) later? I’m concerned, but going to continue anyway.

Day 2, page 1 & 2

Oh crap, I’m half a page in and all of a sudden my dictionary app tells me that the search by drawing function is actually only for paid subscriptions … Pretty sure I can’t read Harta without it, so there goes … $26.99 for a one year subscription I guess?

One shiny new Takoboto subscription later and I’ve doubled my daily page count from one to two! Happy to learn that Laika is okay (alive), and I guess trying to destroy earth possibly? That’s okay, I’m sure earth deserves it. :joy:

Day 3, 5 7 pages read!

I’m looking up multiple words per bubble, feels like, and Laika’s self-aggrandizing kanji usage doesn’t help :joy: but what better way to hook me than an extraterrestrial society of adorably bloodthirsty Soviet space dogs??? So glad this is the first thing I’m reading in Harta.

I have such a hard time not typing Haruta every time.

Day 4, finished chapter! All I can say is …

Gahhh!!! Laikaaaaaa!!!111111

日本ニュー古生物紀行

This appears to be a one-page color illustration with textbook-like description of … a giant lobster? Decided to skip for now (but did enjoy the illustration).

Shorts

姫と忍 by 木原悠里子 (きはらゆりこ)

Day 1 of this story, read almost two pages, only because I saw @SeanBones post about this issue and felt inspired! But it’s getting late, so I only read a little.

Day 2, 15 or so pages (quite a few with few or no words), then finished later in the day.

I’m a little fuzzy on the details … the creativity of the people attracts scary monsters, and if the princess doesn’t give the monsters rice then they hurt the village? I also don’t understand the cotton that becomes stone situation? Or why cotton is flying out of the isolation machine?

Still really enjoyed this one, though. Loved the art.

トネリコ by 粟屋汐理 (あわやしおり)

Cute!!! This story was totally cozy and adorable. That title page really set the scene perfectly. I wonder what the significance of the title is though. Maybe the treehouse these two roommates live together in is in an ash tree?

I gather that this mangaka is completely new, curious to see if they will have any more stories in Harta in the future!

Continuing Series

クプルムの花嫁 by namo

Day 1 of this story, after having read it in English last night I made a pass through the first chapter in Japanese this morning. Looked up a few words, but for the most part relied on my memory of the English any time I had difficulty, or just skimmed past it. Now ready to start chapter two! … in my next reading session.

Still day 1. It is a grey rainy day and I have finished everything else that I’m planning to read out of this issue … oh, although, I guess I was thinking about trying ふろラン as well…and ついたて!餅小町 … But I’m getting really impatient to move on to the next issue, rather than just keep adding series that I want to read in this issue. I can always come back for them later! Wow, all that thinking and paging through and now I have no time left for reading. えへへ

Got to read a little more! I wonder how 銅 on its own is pronounced in this … My dictionary gives three different pronunciations.

Managed to read about 6 pages, but I’m actually way too tired. It’s just that I’m so excited. I have not been keeping track of what I read on what day, but I think I might have read all of はなやっこ and トネリコ today in addition to all this クプルムの花嫁? Maybe I read Toneriko yesterday? I don’t even know anymore. Basically, I did not expect to be doing this well!

Day 2, finished!

I love this one so much!!! I like that Syuu is such an artist, and it leads to some slightly surreal situations.

はなやっこ by 原鮎美 (はらあゆみ)

Read this one cause it’s a 4-koma, which I figure are easier to jump into in the middle. I didn’t really look anything up, and didn’t get most of the gags. I got a couple, though. I’ll try again in the next issue and see if I get any better. I like the art!

There is a smaller, separate table of contents. No idea what that stuff is. Maybe columns or something? Will check it out later. Maybe.
