A Harta-ful of Manga: Let's Read a Magazine Together ❣

Howdy Y’all!

If you are reading this, then you are either

  • Already aware of what Harta is, and are thinking about reading it, OR
  • You have no idea what Harta is, but a friend maybe recommended it to you or maybe you stumbled onto this topic on your own!

Well, it doesn’t matter, because this thread is for everyone! This is a space for those who want to read Harta and discuss their thoughts, or just to read other’s opinions of Harta and find new manga that way. Its all just good manga vibes here, so please don’t be a stranger!

Oh, wait! I haven’t explained what Harta is yet!

Harta is a seinen manga magazine, published by Kadokawa/Enterbrain, that publishes ten times a year (once a month skipping Januarty and July). Now, because it is only published ten times a year, this makes it perfect for getting into reading manga magazines. I recently got into reading a biweekly magazine, which was a lot more stressful to catch up on due to its frequent publications.

Over in that thread, @rodan introduced us to Harta, which is a magazine they had been reading for some time now, and is actually full caught up on! Their write up of the currently running manga series in the magazine (as of issue 109) is linked below. I cannot recommend reading it enough, as it explains a lot of the particulars about Harta, and their thoughts about the individual manga series in it as well as the magazine as a whole.

Here are just some example images of the manga that they use in his article!

just had to throw in Atami-kun for you Rodan!

A lot of us thought that the manga in the magazine looked AMAZING, so there was a lot of interest in reading the magazine. Around the same time, @rodan told us that there is CURRENTLY a sale on Amazon and on Bookwalker on almost every single digital issue they have for about 110 yen a volume!!! GET EM WHILE THEY’RE HOT!!!

Bookwalker!

Amazon!

The digital editions go back to 75, and the current edition as of me writing this is 110. But since so many manga in the magazine look so good, and since the price was so cheap, there was talk of an informal reading group/casual book club thread, for people who wanted to read Harta from volume 75 all the way to the current issue (or as far as they wanted to go!). A thread designed for people to be able to easily access the discussion for any issue of Harta (75 and onwards), not only for those discussing to be able to read at their own pace, but for anyone to be able to follow along easily and find new manga that catches their interest.

If you are still reading, that is where you are. This is that thread. Congratulations on making it here!

That all said, I should make it doubly clear that your don’t have to read any of Harta to participate in the discussion! This is for all Japanese learners/nerds, of all different skills levels. It is also a place for those who are going on the journey of reading Harta to share their experiences, and for everyone to bond over great manga together!

also I mean if you want to get involved in other magazines or see other journeys or just wanna talk about manga and magazines and stuff there is a thread for that…

The post below will be an index/wiki, both as a point of organization for anyone who wants to navigate this read more effectively, and as an index for @rodan’s posts that help explain some confusing things as they come up. Please feel free to add to it at your leisure!

Finally, here is a tag dump of everyone in the other thread who vaguely mentioned off-hand that they were interested in this project/watching others go through this project!

Also thanks to @Belthazar for catching the title formatting error!

@Rodan’s helpful posts! (crudely named by me)

While reading volume 75, this is a helpful guide that will tell you about every series in the issue, how long its been running, and how much longer it runs in the magazine! Hope its of use for y’all!

Wiki Guide:

So I am an absolute noob at making forum threads do useful things, so if there is a better way to do this I’m all ears!

However, as of right now, the way things work is that, when you finish a volume, if you want to make a post of your thoughts, you can link it in the grid below! All you have to do is make a new line, and link that post to the corresponding volume number! I’ll be doing this for each volume, but obviously you do not have to if you don’t want to!! I just figured it would be a good way to be able to easily access anyones thoughts about any volume at any given time. That way we can all read at our own pace, but easily discuss whenever!

Yes I know this is weird, I’ll gladly take any suggestions or improvements!!

I filled in all my Harta issue posts so far onto the graph thing!

The first one for 80 is interesting since I gave (often in retrospect completely wrong) first impressions of everything I found in the magazine. It’s funny how depending on the chapter a series can seem completely different if you’re coming to it for the first time.

I also noticed I’d apparently been meaning to do that series rundown post for over two full years, and that I had made a start to the format that I then completely forgot about when I finally made the one this year. It’s funny that I ended up reinventing almost the same structure for the final post (wow even down to the two screenshots - wild).

One maybe interesting bit of policy for the thread to consider is spoilers – it might get extra messy considering the huge superset of series that any given person might be caught up on, catching up on, or skimming and posting impressions not knowing what’s a spoiler and what isn’t.

Anyway - probably common sense and prodigious use of the ‘hide details’ dropdowns and <spoiler></spoiler> tags whenever in doubt, and knowing going into the thread that what’s in the magazine is fair game to discuss if there’s something you definitely want to avoid, would be fine.

I find reading the magazine you quickly get a sense for which series are pretty much completely fine reading each month without being caught up and aren’t really spoilerable anyway (e.g. the geology one or Hakumei and Mikochi) vs. the more plot-based ones (e.g. Dungeon Meshi, 司書正). The former mean there’s plenty to enjoy in each issue even if not caught up at all on anything, and with the latter… well, I think hopefully for the most part briefly skimming a chapter does more to generate intrigue than really spoil anything? But I’d be curious to hear particularly how people end up dealing with / reacting to Dungeon Meshi nearing its conclusion in this span of issues that went on sale. I think for me I did end up mentally logging some series in my head as like ‘oh I’m definitely going to catch up to that at some point’ and then aggressively flipping past their new chapters in the meantime.

But yeah! Exciting!!
I love Harta and look forward to more people hopefully enjoying it. It’s not perfect or anything, but I think they knock presentation out of the park, feeling much more cozy and inviting as a production than any other magazine I’ve read so far, and every series and short (even the few I outright dislike) are at least a little bit interesting, with a couple being my absolute favorite series.

P.S. One small edit request: I prefer they/them. Not your fault at all though since I don’t really say it anywhere!

Whoops! My bad, it won’t happen again. Sorry about that!!!

Ahhh!!! Thank you!!!

I was worried there would be a lack of content at the beginning since it might take me a few days to do Harta 75, and I didn’t wanna push anyone to read too quickly!!

Oh wow! You really had that in the works!! Glad its finally out for everyone to read! Also those manga also look good, I can’t wait to run into them (I think they are in range of what I’m reading Harta volumewise)

I’ve been so hype just looking through all of them, and not just in your post! There was a really good one I saw at book-off, something like Teito Monogatari? It falls within this reading range so I’m so excited to read it and everything else!

This is a really big thing that I’ve been thinking about.

My first inclination is to say that, if you are reading someones post on a volume (which I should probably mention should contain the volume label at the top), you are accepting whatever spoilers come with that? Kind of that vibe along with what you mentioned here:

Maybe that combined with the spoiler tag/hide details those big spoilers that you would rather hide if you think its important? But generally its the readers responsiblity to skim past series they are interested in (as long as the volumes and such are labeled properly!)

Thats pretty vague though, maybe something more clear and easier to understand as a whole. Anyone who isn’t caught up yet have an opinon/idea?

Thanks!

You’re thinking of Teito Kage Monogatari! Easy mistake to make though, to the point I had to look it up to remember the actual title haha… Teito Monogatari is a famous novel, so it’s probably a play on the name anyway (though I get the impression it isn’t remotely the same tonally or content-wise). Anyway, 帝都影物語 is neat!
I remember it making an impression on me because I think it was the second series in my first issue of Harta and I believe that was chapter 2, so it probably debuted in 79 or 78 or so.

Yeah maybe just make sure always to label what issue or series you’re talking about at the top of the post so people have at least a bit of defense from the ‘aw man I didn’t want to know ANYTHING’ kind of spoiler, and then spoiler tags for anything obviously over the line into full spoiler territory?

Oh yeah! I’ve always wanted to read that as well, thats probably how it got mixed up in my head!

Lets have that be the policy for now! Unless someone specifically requests otherwise!

Also, started mapping out reading stuff, and I just realized the Dungeon Meshi anime is being done by Trigger of all studios?!? Now I’m even more excited! I’ll probably just skip those chapters until after the anime!

Yeah I have a very strong hunch that when the Trigger anime airs, Dungeon Meshi will experience a very deserved surge in popularity, and I’m looking forward to it! It rules.

Oh say - by the way, this might not be useful to anyone not reading the most recent issues, but one additional Harta resource I thought of is the Harta twitter account.

The magazine generally comes out on the 15th of every month (except January and July), and around the 10th or so of every month, the twitter account will announce:
a nice preview of everything the label is releasing that month,
the cover and table of contents of that month’s issue,
and what’s going to release NEXT month.

Obviously nothing about that won’t be clear from either reading the solicits at the back of last month’s magazine or waiting until the new one comes out, but I confess something about seeing all the nice volumes together and getting to ogle the cover and table of contents makes it a minor special occasion to me when they post these.

Hey wait a second! That’s not Atami-kun! That’s uh… … guy from 花園に幹が立つ!!

Funnily enough, Bookwalker’s now having a +50% coinback promotion for Kadokawa-published works until 12/25, so for the next few days, in addition to all those older issues being discounted to 100 yen, buying any issue through 109 (or any collected volumes from Harta series) gives half your money back in store credit.

Yay, I’m excited! I started issue 75 already, and am keeping a sort of stream-of-consciousness log of my efforts! At my current speed it’ll still be a little while before I have something complete to share, but I’m looking forward to it.

I didn’t think I was going to participate, haha, but this many people committing to it got me thinking about it… I was on the fence until the +50% coinback promotion pushed me over (though, it wouldn’t let me use PayPal for them outside of Japan, so I, uh, turned on my VPN to get it to let me buy them, and had to pay a little extra sales tax).

No idea how long it’ll take me to get through them, though. I’ll likely be quite slow!

Oh I’m so excited!!! No worries about pace everyone!

In order to help everyone out, I’m working on a post that should make reading volume 75 a bit of a smoother process! Should be done in an hour or two!

Howdy Y’all!

I thought this might be helpful for people going through 75 as their first volume of Harta! Here is the table of contents, and underneath is a (rough) English title for each series, and exactly when they start and end publication! That way, you can know if its worth getting into a series, or how much backstory there is! I hope this helps people!

Also, I’ll make this post a wiki in case anyone wants to edit my names or change/add information to it!

Welp, bought the whole backlog due to sale, coinback, and the excitement in this thread. Now if only I had time to read. :joy: I’ll try to find some interesting series from here!

(I guess ハルタ balances my 月刊ビッグガンガン diet…)

I couldn’t help but join in the fun of y’all who are starting with 75!

Here’s my thoughts about that issue:
ハルタ 75号
I can confidently say there’s easily 50-100 yen’s worth of entertainment to be had, so to my relief I should be safe from anyone grabbing torches and pitchforks for now!

The highlight discovery for me this issue is definitely Laika’s Star!
I think it’s a great treat that the first chapter of that is in this issue, and it’ll go for 4 nicely contained chapters in total, ending before what was my first issue back then. I hope you’ll like it too and it will be a great example of what can be so cool to discover in Harta - particularly since the author’s later series 犬火の兄弟 is one of my new favorites in the present day issues of the magazine (though as it’s been developing recently it might be aiming to wrap up quickly too…).
In my enthusiasm, I stopped and read through the collected edition I’d bought ages ago and had been meaning to get to. Here’s my thoughts on that!
ライカの星
There’s conveniently no need to buy that to get the full story of this series, but if you like it it may well still be worth it to pick up someday since there’s about a hundred pages of the author’s other stories also included.

The other thing I’d say is definitely do aggressively skip Dungeon Meshi here if you haven’t read it!
The chapter this issue is memorably wild as to be fair, quite a few Dungeon Meshi chapters are, and it’ll be a lot more fun, have a lot more impact, and make a lot more sense if you read it in the context of the whole series!

Say, by the way! Out of curiosity, how did you compile this?
I always find it a bit tricky to piece together what chapters are in what issue of what magazine. Did you use a useful reference source of some kind, or did you painstakingly look through a whole lot of tables of contents?
