A Certain Bidoof's Multi-Language Study Log 🇯🇵 🇩🇪 🇨🇦 🇵🇱

グテン・モーニンゲン・ツザッメン!!!

It’s ya giiiirl, Amelia, 27, Berlin, Germany! :leaf_fluttering_in_wind:

Japanese advancements since the last thread!

I had a very long break from WaniKani, and I wasn’t even thinking of looking back. I was significantly burned out, while not having burned the items yet, and I wanted to move on and do something else in life. For a year or something, I did absolutely nothing in regards to my language study, then I signed up for N3 in 2022 in Düsseldorf, had a very unhealthy binge session ahead of it, managed to barely pass it and I was like, yep, that’s enough.

Over the course of 2023 I was having a few bouts and thought about getting back to it, but then I found it really hard to connect to the content I was consuming, so I decided not to bite.

At the beginning of 2024 I remembered that motivation follows training, and not the other way around, so I finally got myself a physical copy of Tobira, as not having finished it was one of my bigger regrets, and paired it with an Anki deck for all of the vocab in Tobira. I finished the deck somewhere in June.

After that, me and my friend decided to both sign up for JLPT together: she would do N4, while I would do N3 again. This time I tried to approach study in a more sustainable way, not to burn myself out, but also, not to learn as fast.

I started with WaniKani, I had a huuuge, 1500+ item wall of reviews waiting for me when I got back after having reset already.
…I made all the reviews in a single day.
Having seen that my accuracy was at over 90%, I got really motivated and I made it a point of mine to do WaniKani every day since.

In the meantime, I signed up for Italki and had a few lessons with a teacher. Having them made me realize how much behind I was with grammar and the fluidity of me speaking, so I just attended lessons and kept grinding more and more topics that were supposed to help me with JLPT.

I created a few trial accounts on Bunpro, made a few crams on them, and as soon as the trial was over, I’d make another account.

In October, I went to Japan, for the first time ever, and I tried my best to speak Japanese exclusively when I was there. I did a 山手線謎めぐり2024 by being really annoying and asking everyone around for hints (in Japanese) and heavily exploited my JR Pass going everywhere I felt like, jumping on Shinkansens completely spontaneously.

And then I returned, me and my friend ramped up practice ahead of December’s JLPT, Bunpro, WaniKani and Duolingo… and then the test destroyed me with how difficult it was xdd
It might have even been more difficult than in the summer of 2022, even though my Japanese felt much stronger. I might have passed, I don’t know yet, but the highlight is that I didn’t even get to three or four texts in the reading section, because I simply don’t read fast enough. Even though my reading speed increased significantly regardless ^^

As of January 2025, I signed up for B1.4 classes at a VHS in Berlin, and I got kicked out of the group after the first class, because I was apparently too good. I enrolled to a B2.4 group and I haven’t had my first classes yet, that’s next Monday ^^

I’m in the middle of playing through 新すばらしきこのせかい for a fourth year running, but I made huge progress on it on a plane to Japan, got to the second part of week 2, and my motivation kinda went away ^^

How's your life since then, Bidoof?

Berlin has become my favorite place on Earth, I love so many things about it. One of the predictions I’ve made in the last study thread, about me being able to use rail when I’m there by 2025, came true much faster than that and I’m in Nordrhein-Westfalen every two months, if not more often. I’ve travelled to maaany, maaany places in Europe, but even in Berlin itself, I’ve made a few precious friends.

I had a bit of a shock therapy going here, because as a neurodivergent woman, I was struggling to find other people I would connect with, but I managed to find a few other neurodivergent girls that wouldn’t stop yapping if you enable them and would just jump between topics every ten seconds, and my cheeks would never stop flushing and having a girls evening ranting while increasing speed and volume literally all the time is enough for me to be on cloud nine for the rest of the week. I love it when I’m about to fall asleep and one of my friends sends me a 17-minute voice message and I go like “welp, no sleep today” xddd

One of my friends is an enabler of mine as well, she goes like “wow thats so cool…” on everything that I tell her, and hearing her react like that makes me even more interested and excited in doing things such as studying Japanese. She’s also a polyglot, knowing French, Spanish, English, and learning German at the moment, so I’m sorry, I cannot fall behind, I’m learning languages now ^^

What about other languages?

I’m trying to integrate myself with the German society, which isn’t easy when you’re in Berlin and some people here don’t even speak German, even though they’re supposed to by now ^^

My number one problem with German language is that I can’t get myself excited much about learning it, and each time I sit properly in front of a textbook and go like, “it’s a German learning session now”, my thoughts start drifting to why I’m not studying Japanese instead. That being said, I consume it passively, and I spent a big part of 2022 and 2023 just consuming the language like a sponge. I did a B1 course, then did some B2, and then… joined a Betriebsrat and went to a Wirtschaftsausschuss training, and having realized I understand more than I thought, did one for Betriebsrat as well in Stuttgart. Am I fluent in German? Probably not, but more importantly, I’m achieving my language goal of participating in a language, rather than just learning it!

I wish I could get myself to regularly watching Tagesschau or even having German TV in the background the whole time, but I have a limited amount of spoons in a day, that might be one spoon too much I feel like ^^

I’m also really fascinated by Toki Pona and I did a few lessons on that, I have a feeling I want to become good at it eventually, especially since there are community events around it and Sonja Lang herself welcomed me in the community, but spoon theory again, we’ll see how it goes ^^

I’ve spent a month in Spain and got my Spanish to a proper A0, proud of myself, keep at it!
And Korean, I know how to read hangul now. I’m an MVP :sunglasses:

What are you doing here? Aren't you level 60????

Yeeeesss…ish…?
As it turns out, language is way more than just learning kanji, and also, language is a muscle that you have to keep practicing over time. I forgot a ton of kanji, but seeing them once or twice, and then seeing a definition and a reading again, makes it pretty easy for me to remember it again, so I’m just, cruising. Coasting. Remembering kanji.

Kanji are my favorite part of Japanese language, but also, I want to study in a bit more rounded-up way as well, so this time around I’m practicing other skills in addition to kanji.

What I used to do in the past was attempting to play video games in Japanese, I finished Origami King and Pokemon Shield in 2020, but haven’t played much stuff in Japanese since. Same with anime, I struggle to get myself into watching anime, because when I do, I try to guide myself to actively listening to dialogues, and it drains me somewhat. As a result of that, me writing this thread is another step in an attempt to get myself more and more interested in Japanese language again. I’ve been having pretty mixed results throughout 2023 and 2024, but the trend is still upwards, and I want to retain it for as long as possible. I just wish I had more spoons in the spoon theory a day. Brainrot as a concept is real ^^

How do you practice now?

As of writing this thread, I have a five-part regiment that I entertain every day.

  • 15 lessons on WaniKani. You know, the “sustainable” speed xd
  • 90-160 reviews of kanji a day on WaniKani. Basically, trying to end every day with a zero on the review tile.
  • 3 new grammar points on Bunpro. Following the Tobira textbook path, even though I should have known N3 by now. I’ve only seen the grammar points, I don’t know how to use them fluently yet, so bit by bit, every day.
  • 30-50 grammar reviews on Bunpro. There’s plenty of ghosts that follow me around, but I’m trying my best to just move a tiny bit each day, and seeing where it goes.
  • exactly one lesson on Duolingo. I was trying to quit Duolingo, but that’s the only app I use right now where I can’t autopilot and I actively have to focus on what I’m listening to, so Duolingo still stays, even though it doesn’t help me that much.

I practice after 11pm of a given day, and my five-part grinding regiment takes about 40 minutes every day.

Every few days, I find myself wishing I had a few more tools around my belt: maybe doing some reading in a book club? Maybe reading a visual novel? Maybe finding a tandem partner? Maybe watching a Japanese TV 番組? But sadly, I currently don’t have the mental capacity to do so, so I don’t tend to do it very much. I’ve become really bad at deep focus and not being distracted with things, so that’s another muscle I’m attempting to practice while grinding! Oh well.

I hope that the weekly B2 course from Japanese will keep me engaged as well!

I don’t have any quantifiable language goals. One of my goals used to be to read the original 2000 月姫 in Japanese, but then I read the remake in English, and it kinda spoiled my plans. But, you know, who knows?
But for me, it’s not about having goals, it’s about being disciplined and becoming 0.01% better every day. Am I becoming 0.01% better every day? ^^

And in terms of the non-quantifiable goals… how does “being a part of a language” sound like? Rather than clear a video game or something, maybe join a japanese-only community? Maybe make a few Japanese friends? Maybe write a wiki post for a gacha game or something? Translate a manga panel, or do anime subs? It’s not quantifiable though, and I wouldn’t worry too much about it though ^^

How can you help a fellow Bidoof?

please please please keep me accountable of studying xddd
Also, if you see anything cool in Japanese language that made you go, like, uuuUuUuuuuU, let me know, I need to connect my neurodivergent hyperfixations to Japanese language. I know now many people will, but wouldn’t it be cool?

My Media Magazines thread
Post celebrating level 60 in the past!

I made it to level 60, reset my WaniKani and I’m slowly climbing the tree once again. The latest update of this thread is on March 20th, 2025, and this is where I was back then:

I didn’t want to make it a diary, but the cat is out of the bag now, you’re also following me on the adventure called Project Me ^^

  • 15 lessons on WaniKani
  • 36 reviews on Bunpro
  • 3 lessons on Bunpro
  • 1 lesson on Duolingo
  • Misc: two episodes of 薬屋のひとりごと (with English subs, can’t find Japanese anywhere)

(that’s the actual data for today btw ^^)

I’ll keep on adding to that thread. I’ll try to keep unbrainrotting myself, and we’ll see where I end up!

Thank you very much for having read my post and I’ll hope I’ll keep posting here for a while C:

I hope you’re going to have an amazing day, and in case you’re also learning Japanese, let’s keep one another motivated and let’s have our language study based dreams come true!

And yeah, I bought a lot of volumes of Chihayafuru from Book-off when I was there, ¥110 yen a volume - I still haven’t gotten around to it though, waiting for a potential book club for Chihayafuru to open ^^

Have a nice evening everyone!

Today I almost spent the whole day out, I spoke to a friend I mentioned in the OP in German and it’s an interesting thing, knowing you both are limited by the language abilities, but you still try your best. We both told one another that we were able to perfectly understand one another, even if it did take a while, so hey, my German isn’t as bad as it could’ve been ^^

I’ll try my best at more Japanese tomorrow!

Five layers of clothes today, really cold outside, it’s even a mental block to have difficulties convincing myself to go out xdd

No luck in terms of getting myself to be more productive in Japanese yet, but had a pretty insightful session of Japanese learning today, follow me on this rabbit hole ^^

First, January 11th:

  • 84 reviews on WaniKani
  • 15 lessons on WaniKani
  • 36 reviews on Bunpro
  • 3 lessons on Bunpro
  • 1 lesson on Duolingo

Look at this sentence:

As soon as I saw it, I was like “something smells fishy here”
That’s such a simple grammar, but I’ve never seen 危ない being used before to refer to “being in danger” rather than “dangerous”

so i took it to WaniKani’s dictionary and…

why is this not pronounced more often???

either way, weirdest TIL of today, i love the final example on this list, i’ll try to rethink the usage of the word 危ない in my head because it has some fun potential ^^

Went to an Indian Film Festival with friends yesterday (Girls will be Girls) and then saw Nosferatu yesterday, pretty cool day I would say ^^

This time my mind was drawn towards the grammar of さて, where I was trying to put it into a sentence that went

but before I arrived at this sentence, I tried a few different other words

Because of that, I came up with a model of “well then” grammars in my own head, from the most casual, to the most formal xdd
さあ
さて
じゃあ
では

will come in handy in the Japanese classes later today I imagine ^^

Today I had a day where the New Year’s had finally caught up with me and some threads that I couldn’t wrap up in my journaling have finally started bearing fruit. It’s sometimes when you put yourself upon “WHY AM I LIKE THAT” that some of the best (?) ideas come xdd

But at the Japanese classes today, I spoke to a woman who did a grad course at Ritsumeikan and she learned Japanese quite a lot over that time, I’m pretty envious~~~

And in terms of what we’ve done at the classes today, something that completely left my consciousness, for how important this word is…

ahh, one of the all time classics C:

Hoi hoi everyone, give it up for me, I’m back ^^

I’m really hoping that by the time I’m doing an update tomorrow, an announcement of an announcement of Nintendo Switch 2 will have properly been announced, this wait is killing me on this side xdd

Started my day today reeeally strong in terms of mental energy and so on, but work do be draining and the drain carried out pretty deeply into my free time as well. If only I could channel the energy I use at work for studying Japanese instead…

But using the fact I felt strong in the morning today, made me go:

  • 1.5 episodes of YUYUの日本語Podcast

I still find myself pretty tired when I’m listening to source material that I don’t 100% understand, especially if I get stuck on a word that I could swear I’ve heard before, and I’m like “hmm, what was that on-AH, I get it!”, and now you’re 2 sentences behind in listening xdd
So far, isn’t getting easier, but listening was probably never my forte yet ^^

Also, two grammar points with “thanks to” and “because of” today, no chance in heck I won’t be mistaking those two all the time, even when they’re Seasoned xdd

To keep お陰で separate from せい, せい can be read as fault. Instead of just because of the heat, in that sentence it’s the heat’s fault that he passed out. Because of is still correct, but I’ve seen it as fault enough that that’s how I’d think of it. Blame it on the heat.

I was surprised at how many characters I recognized in the prologue and how quick I could read it, but still, recognizing characters and being able to understand what is going on are two separate skills. I understood what was going on because I remembered the adaptation of the scene, but the rest was pretty tough. For example, if I wanted to understand all that went on, I’d probably need to read the sentence of:

久美子の拳にも、知らず知らずのうちに力がこもる。

like five times or something, but i happily continued my reading assuming that Kumiko’s fist had an unknown power something something, and then only looked it up on DeepL to write this post, GOOD ENOUGH

books might not be my best way of learning Japanese, I unironically think it would be something like Famicom Detective Club with full voice acting, but also brainrot is consuming me and it’s hard to focus for this long xdd

Greetings from Edinburgh, flew there earlier today with me mom. Melatonin did heavy carry in terms of allowing me to get to sleep early, but even then I’ve only had a few hours of rest, so my energy levels are mostly blblbl today (and will not improve throughout this week xdd)

So interestingly enough, 笑み男 was going really well until I finished chapter 1, and the first scene of chapter 2, with a new inspector coming in and talking at a higher level of politeness really started pushing me. I liked the deduction segment of the first chapter, because I understood the whole concept and I was able to answer all the questions just fine, so yay for Emio!

Also, no town guides in Japanese in my hotel, this is presumptuous!!!

Not big of a day in terms of learning Japanese, but I found a cute stationery shop in Edinburgh and bought me some stickers. Straight after the flight back home had a board game session and a film watch (Laapataa Ladies, was pretty neat!), so fun times, we agreed to come to my place next Sunday and play a Japanese linguistic game called Esperization, I got in on SPIEL in Essen last year:

We have a group of friends that’s mostly tri+lingual, so it should be a proper workout ^^
There’s one person here on WaniKani I asked to join and I’ll see if they pull through, but they might not make it next Sunday ;_;

If you’re here on WaniKani forums, are in Berlin and want to play a conlang toki pona generator, let me know until next Sunday, I could unironically welcome and accommodate you here xdd

Need to buy a textbook for the classes tomorrow, it’s the intermediate みんなの日本語中級1, wonder where i’ll find it

Anyway, WaniKani friend not coming to board games on Sunday, 寂しい!

A lot of reviews coming up tomorrow, we’ll see if I manage to scale them ^^

Also, look how nice and even the Bunpro graph is on Day 50, there’s almost always the same amount of reviews there!

You absolutely should tell people that! Today was a reeally hard day on WaniKani, and tomorrow is set out to be 166, with Friday with at least 250 on the horizon, I need to try to sit down and focus and I should be just fine.

In terms of personal life, I made my first hack of Pokemon Emerald on a pokeemerald-expansion decomp that has my friends in it C:

The source code is out there in the wild ^^

I don’t have any ideas where to take the hack next, but it was fun to play around with the source code and it’s really easy to navigate it around…and add a few extra base stats to Bidoof so that they’re stronger than Arceus ^^

And in terms of Japanese, look how pretty this expression is:

There’s a book by Prince Harry whose title reminded me of today pretty strongly xddd

After a few reviews, I finally got spared indeed. Thank you Prince Harry!

Today was the hardest day of reviews since I got back to doing WaniKani/Bunpro, with more Enlightened/Seasoned reviews coming around, I need to be mindful of the fact that those days will in fact be more common.

As a silver lining, today I only started studying 45 minutes before midnight and had the deepest session of deep focus I’ve had in a while, writing something, enter, writing something, enter, writing something, enter. One of things that I really wish I could be good at in terms of grinding things is just to remove the emotions from the process of grinding, and today was pretty close to that… But I really wish I could just focus on having emotions through enjoying consuming material in native language ^^

明日は多分、練習以外で何か読んでみるつもりだ。

It’s just today I definitely didn’t have capacity for it. I’ve had for making something resembling an instruction booklet for my hack yesterday for Pokemon Emerald! But that’s it, fatigue is catching up with me ^^

I’ll finally have a chance to properly rest on Friday, which I’m very much looking forward to ^^

Let’s talk Japanese today! I had a lot of cycling today: went to the office to Beschluss for the Betriebsrat and then had a dentist on the opposite side of the town, when my Spotify algorithm fed me the last episode of Tom Scott’s Lateral and it switched to Yuyu’s podcast, I was like “oh, whew, finally good algorithm” xdd

I find Yuyu’s podcast to be pretty difficult to understand at times, but that’s because listening comprehension is my weakest part of Japanese, so I was struggling at times trying to pedal uphill and understand what he’s saying, but when I focused on his words specifically, I was able to make out a lot, so it’s probably a matter of attention.

As for Akane, her podcast is really comprehensible for me, I don’t understand 100% of what she’s saying, but I can clearly understand the stories she says and all of the context, it’s probably because she’s a teacher though ^^
Listening to her puts me in the “flow” mode though.

And when it comes to Rebirth, me and a friend from Italy are going to a concert in Düsseldorf for FF7 Rebirth orchestral music in March, so it’s high time to catch up on the source material! I played it a bit in German before, but now on the Steam Deck, I set it to Japanese. Unfortunately, the chances I’ll finish it are close to zero, but I can at least vibe to the first part of the plot ^^
Tifa and Cloud = understand them just fine
Sephiroth = why do you speak like this. whyyy. xddd

And hey, I really had a good shot at Emio, I should return to it too!

Okay, here’s the scary bit.

I have 299 reviews on WaniKani tomorrow.
And a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, that will probably last until midnight easily.

Tomorrow’s update might be a bit late bECAUSE I MIGHT SPEND AN HOUR OR TWO JUST DOING THE REVIEWS, but I intend on doing my best regardless. It’s just, the sustainability standpoint is getting significantly contested now. I’ll have to rethink my studying regiment in a while ;___; xd

Anyway, take care everyone and have a fun evening!

  • 299 reviews on WaniKani
  • 15 lessons on WaniKani
  • 54 reviews on Bunpro
  • 3 lessons on Bunpro
  • 1 lesson on Duolingo - a few seconds after midnight, sadly

Here it is, all the burns I missed today:

and i burned 175 items today ^^

Will have to wait a bit for the next burns, but yeah, nice to have a few ^^

I went to the Japanese Embassy in Berlin today, they have a bear right in front of it that’s styled after Japanese classical culture, look how pretty it is C:

Anyway, the reason why I missed the Duolingo time is that I got caught in this sentence and I started sharing it with people:

and then I didn’t notice how late it’s become, so the economic reform entailing pain also entailed pain as a standalone sentence xdd

Tomorrow should be a bit lighter on WaniKani, but it’s Bunpro that’s getting really difficult, I might or might not slow down on Bunpro after I finish the Tobira textbook grammars ^^

As usual, take care everyone~
