👻 10分でよめるこわいはなし・ 10 minute scary stories (Absolute Beginner Book Club)

Hello everyone! I originally was going to be a part of the Doraemon absolute beginner book club, but IRL stuff got the best of me and I had to set aside my Japanese learning for a bit. I’ve gotten back into it though, and what a nice coincidence that the first week of the new book happened to be right now

Since I wasn’t a part of the last book club, this will be my first time reading actual stories… it’s a bit nerve wracking, but I’ll try my best! Let’s read some spooky stories together

(And thank you to those above talking about getting a VPN to get the book on Bookwalker. Tunnelbear was pretty easy to set up.)

Week 4 is here! We’re starting a new story, so if you fell behind in the first story, this is a good time to jump back in.

Hello !
I apologize if it is intrusive, i will delete my post. It is my first time participating in a forum type of community, so I feel very lost aha. I Would love to participate because I figured out this book club could be exactly what I need, but I see the book reading started already, can I start late ? Also is this the place to discuss our reading ? I have looked a lot of posts today and guides like this one, Joining the Absolute Beginner Book Club: Preparation and First Reading Experience Expectations - #8 by HieronymusBotch, so maybe I got lost, I apologize.

It’s been a busy day trying to look at how to improve my japanese learning experience, while still having fun !

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hey, welcome! No need to delete your post!

The way book clubs are organized is that there is a home thread (right where you are!) to discuss things like schedule, and post links to each week’s thread.

The schedule in the original post will show which week we’re on, and which story/chapter we’re reading from the book.

All book discussion should take place in the individual threads per week!

Absolutely! This is a particularly good book to jump in on since it’s unconnected short stories. This week we’re starting a brand new story, so if you head to the week 4 thread you’ll be able to see which pages are assigned for this week. Any grammar questions or comments about the story should go in that thread!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks a lot that is very clear :). I will do my best to keep up with my puny level 5!! So I shall start with week 4, correct ? thanks !

I also would like to read it on kindle, should I create an amazon jp account?

Yes!

Yes, you would need a separate amazon jp account to buy Japanese Kindle books :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you kindly ! My last question (I promise!) is : I saw on the “how to start” thread that learning grammar for 4 weeks is highly recommended before starting trying to read. Should I maybe wait for next book and follow the recommended course of action, or would it be achievable to do the genki basic course recommended while also deciphering the book  ?

I would say if you’re super excited to start now, go ahead and start! It will definitely be hard, but do as much as you can (even if it’s not very much) and continue with your grammar studies on the side. :slightly_smiling_face: There are no rules about how much of the book you have to finish, or how quickly you need to finish it! (Even if you finish behind the club schedule, there will still be people watching the threads to answer questions)

I really want to try to start reading now but I don’t know how to buy from kobo. Would love to read from my Kobo reader. Tried to look for it on cdjapan to buy physical, but it’s not there and can’t order from amazon jp since it doesn’t ship to eu.

Any advice?

I recently bought Scary Stories from cdjapan. The physical copy still shows up as available on their webpage.

Hiya, what’s the problem you’re having with buying from Kobo?

I struggled to check out without a Japanese phone number but I used the Kobo Japan contact number as my phone number and it went just fine.

You do need an account on the Japanese Kobo site, which should automatically link to your other Kobo account if you use the same email address.

Yeah the problem is the phone number. Do the books appear on my kobo after purchasing? Same as purchasing from normal store?

The book appeared in my Kobo app because it links your accounts using your ‘kobo id’ (which is usually your email address, but it might be a username if you created one)
