🔊 Listen Every Day Challenge - Winter 2024 ⛄❄

:headphones: :snowman_with_snow: softlyraining’s easy listening :coffee: :loud_sound:

Days 1〜7
Well, I ended up getting COVID right at the start of the year. :mask: I’m feeling somewhat better, so I figured I could start posting my progress for the challenge (I was trying to avoid excessive screen time).

Even though I was sick, and I understood it wouldn’t be a big deal if I missed a day of the challenge, I also felt a little deflated at the thought of literally missing a day right at the start, so I pretty much stuck with the Todaii app for the first week. It may not have been much listening practice, but it was plenty for me.

Today I watched an episode of Rilakkuma and Kaoru. Definitely some cute moments from the animal characters. I couldn’t keep up with the phone conversation between Kaoru and her mother, but the rest of the episode was fine. I’ll probably rewatch this episode tomorrow and take my time with the phone call scene.

Episode 1 of Nihongo con Teppei Sleep, but I didn’t like it  I was listening to it to fall asleep (that’s what I assumed it was for) but his voice is too high pitched to be soothing, and the volume kept spiking.

A return to a more standard day today, got through another 6 episodes of シュンと日本語。One of them was an episode on tongue twisters, which he mentioned “It’s a good test of your japanese pronounciation on”. Though in my case, my Japanese pronounciation is bad enough without tongue twisters involved

Uni started today, which means commuting started again! I usually listen to news podcasts during my commute. Today I only listened to 森本毅郎. It’s a TBS podcast that mainly takes its news from 毎日新聞. They also have little interview segments where they interview passersby on a certain topic. I had some catch-up to do since I neglected news podcasts during the holidays. It’s impossible to listen to all epiaodes I missed but I listened to the regular news podcast from last Friday, the street interview from Friday about whether people have 防災リュック in their homes or not, and the regular news from today. Also a small segment on the one member of parliament who was one of the first to be arrested in the 裏金 scandal, but I found it difficult to understand with little background knowledge.

It got too good for me to stop and I was too tired to stop myself from watching. I love this anime series now. Too bad I caught up TuT. Have to watch something else tomorrow.

I haven’t been doing a great job of doing real listening practice every day and didn’t make a home post or anything, but I’m enjoying reading everyone’s updates and wanted to hop in and give a recommendation for an easier show to try out!

ゆびさきと恋々 (A Sign of Affection) is currently airing, and since the main character is deaf, many of the characters speak slowly and articulate very well in order to make it easier for her to read their lips. As a bonus for the japanese learner, that makes it pretty easy to follow

it’s also extremely cute. College-aged shoujo romance

oh, did you ever figure out what this was? I remembered hearing it when I watched that episode as well, and trying to look it up but not being able to find anything

I’ve been trying to move around my new schedule in a way that suits my life and my studies best, so tomorrow I’m going to try incorporating listening time at a different point in my day rather than squeezing in ten minutes before bed

I started a new 日本語の森 lesson, this time for N2 vocabulary. This is my first time sitting for an N2 class and the amount of unknown vocab is intimidating! I can’t wait to keep learning

See you tomorrow!

oh! It’s an anime now? :eyes: Will check it out!

I tried listening to it again and here’s what I’m hearing:

(13:44) 儚げだが、それでいてしただか
Subs: She appeared fragile, but she’s actually quite clever.

Maybe it’s supposed to be 強か?

Day 9

This video drawing a woman’s face with watercolor crayons. When I was doing a reading in Quartet, I saw カレール and 定番(ていばん), which I had learned a few days ago.

New words:
原色(げんしょく) - primary color
微妙(びみょう) - subtle; delicate This is actually a level 28 word that I’ll learn in ~2 days.
個展(こてん) - solo exhibition

Total time so far: 1:38:54

Another batch of podcast episodes for today’s listening. Honestly at this pace I might run out before the challenge ends. I tried the Nihongo con Teppei for beginners podcast to head that off, but at least episode 1 has so much repetition that it was hard to listen to. Does the main podcast ramp up in assumed listening ability or do they have more podcasts to look at (I heard people mention a second podcast for sleep, so there may be more)

This show is so cute. I like the art style too. Listening went fine for the most part, there was one guy I couldn’t hear what he said (the ikemen hair cutter).

Seems like JP dub of TGCF is available on the site I’m using. Might check it out, though I’m not expecting to be a big fan of the dubbed version. Different voices, different catchphrases. Gege =/= nii-san.

Day 8

1 episode from JapanesePod101.

Day 9

One or 2 episodes from JapanesePod101.
And the complete track from Satori Reader. That was difficult even when done after going through the text.

Would have done an episode Nihongo con Teppei for beginners but my eyes feel tired. To bed it is. GL everyone!

Hello folks, I started my own “listen every day challenge” myself last month without knowing that there was a topic for this exact thing on WK. So, when I stumbled on it I thought I’d join in.

What I'm listening to:

Nihongo First Class, Simple Japanese Listening with Meg, Kuroneko Mum, Kendra's Language School, among a few others that I'll add when I can go thru my playlist.

My strategy

My goal is to do longer sessions and I've been aiming for about an hour. Sometimes I only get 30 mins, and others I get as much as 90 mins. I was initially doing just the N5 practice videos because they had shorter sentences, and 3-6 sentence dialogues. This week I added short 5 min story videos to try my hand at comprehension. Takes me anywhere from 15-30 mins to get through a 5 min story video because I do a lot of replaying bits over and over to hear all the words. It's amazing how your brain filters through what sounds like 10 seconds of gibberish at first, but by the 5th play through can pick out every word in the 10 second bit.

The vocab in this lesson moves much faster than the N3 lessons :face_holding_back_tears: I was casually adding unknown words into my vocab srs for the N3 video but, while the N2 video is playing, by the time I add one unknown word three more have already been discussed ahaha

Nonetheless, it’s always nice to hear Ogawa先生’s explanations! I listened for ~15mins while I cooked dinner (rather than 10 mins before bed) but I want to try listening during my commute as well for extra time! (๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ

See you tomorrow!

Another lunch time walk, another batch of podcast episodes. Today he was talking about Japanese summer and how it’s too hot. Given I was out for a walk in 2C, I could have used that! It was interesting how he compared Japanese summer to Californian summer, as I have been to California during the summer. I do agree the humidity makes a big difference, I could handle 40C in California easier than I can handle 30C at home. I thought he was stepping around the word for humidity but actually he included it in his translations at the end, so I guess I just missed where it was used in the script.

Also a rare topical episode (or topical at time of recording). He’d done an episode on the Tokyo olympics, then two more episodes later had a followup on the fact that Japan allowed it to go ahead during COVID because he’d had comments after the first episode.

Today I realized that when I listen a story after reading it, it’s better when I hide the text to do active listening. That said, I was too tired to do that when listening to (かさ)地蔵(じぞう), and I watched again at the text after 5 pages or so

EDIT : so glad I wrote the 100th post of this thread ! \o/ I love this challenge so far :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
