Oh yeah, lemme tell you my Game of Thrones spoiler story.
I’ve never read the books, so when the TV series started, all my, uh, “friends” around me who had were all going “Oh boy, I can’t wait to see the Red Wedding scene!” Which quite honestly tells me nothing except that there’s gonna be a wedding… where everyone wears red, or something, I dunno. But even so, when said Red Wedding actually did appear, my reaction had already been changed from “WHOA! A THING HAPPENED” to “oh. so that’s what happened.”
Dismemberment is shown in fairly graphic detail literally on page one (I mean, it’s page five according to the numbering, but you get my point). Having trigger warnings after that feels mildly superfluous.

Some people just can’t help themselves with the spoilers, I don’t get it.
I remember a discussion my girlfriend was having with one of her friends about a show she intended to watch and the friend was like “oh this was really great, I really enjoyed the end of the season because…” and my girlfriend interrupts her saying “nonono, I don’t want to know anything” and the other continues “oh but it’s not a spoiler, it’s just that I was really surprised when something happens in that episode and…” and basically my girlfriend basically had to insist three or four time just to get her to shut up about it.
I think some people like spoilers because it gets them hyped for things to come but you have to respect that not everybody is that way.

When I get to that bloody chapter it better traumatize me or you’ll hear about it. Now my expectations are high.

The exact same thing happened to me with the same event, not with the show but book 3 (couldn’t afford the hardcover and had to wait a year for the paperback, which unfortunately meant lots of chances to get spoilered). The people who spoilered me were even kind enough to add something like “It happens so fast! In retrospect you’ll see the clues, but the first time it totally takes you by surprise!” So guess what, every single clue felt like a giant-ass neon sign saying “4 more pages until THING happens!” I’ve never been so disappointed by a work of fiction in my entire life.
I already feel like asking for my money back,even though I haven’t yet paid anything.

Incredible hype!
I’m not sure I’m at the level to be reading along with the intermediate club yet, but FMA:Brotherhood is by far one of my favourite anime!
I’d just been considering it as the first anime for me to watch without subtitles since I know the story so well already.
I’ll consider this extra motivation to keep practicing my reading and grammar over the next two months. 
Even if I can’t quite follow along, I’ll certainly try to! I’ll also look forward to reading the reactions of first time readers in the thread!

Hi, just wondering why August 3rd as the “start date.” Seems rather far away. I’m still new to this site and the first time joining a book club that hasn’t already ended. Although August seems like… two months away 
Quite a ways away. I just went out and bought the first volume again (had it before but think I sold it along with a pile of other manga recently) so starting to get a little excited.
My history with the series:
I watched all of the first anime and movie (jeeze, maybe 20 years ago?), read most of the manga. I read everything up to what was being released at the time and even started reading the chapters as they came out in Gangan. Not sure why I stopped but IIRC it felt a little drawn out, so I waited for the volumes to be released. I bought the last volumes of the manga when they came out but just never read them… and sold it with a big pile of other manga (literally for pennies… sad). This must have been about 15-16 years ago. Can’t remember. Saw the first episode of Brotherhood when it came out but that’s it…
It’s a series I’ve always been meaning to come back to so stumbling onto this book club notice got me motivated to read it again. Looking forward to reading it again with you all!!

The last vote for the IMC ended in a draw, so we ended up selecting two books: 紡ぐ乙女と大正の月 and this one.
We’re doing 紡ぐ乙女と大正の月 first (starting next week) which is why FMA is so far away.

My “current stats” screenshot is based on known words I’ve logged on my manga frequency list site, Manga Kotoba.
The projection of what my stats would be if I learned more high frequency words are from a still-in-development option that I’m trying to get working well that will show how learning more high-frequency words will change those stats.
Advertisement Mode
The site is still early in development (launched earlier this year), and I’m still trying out different things to see what does and does not work.
It’s my primary source for what words to add to SRS and start learning, and I hope to develop something to help get me back into kanji-learning.
In a month, I’ll have a few days where I’ll have a lot of manga-reading time, limited Internet access, and slightly time-consuming word look-ups. I’ll be using Manga Kotoba to help me select what I’ll buy from Kobo to read over those days, based on what series I have the highest number of known words and sentences I can read without look-ups. I currently have 15 series listed at 80%+ known words. (Now if only 11 of them didn’t appear to be “yet another high school romance”…)

I used the site to prep (learn some kanji) before reading とんがり帽子 and it was definitely worth it and made the experience smoother and more enjoyable!

Edit: just looked into the Dungeon Meshi entry - even without the syncing of known words to compare, the full vocab list of the volume is available. That is fantastic - I can’t believe I am only finding this out now

Not at this time. It’s something in consideration for eventually, but not any time soon.
But if the site’s designed well enough, it’s really quick and easy to mark known words as one encounters them in frequency lists.
I do tend to post a link to a volume frequency list for new manga book club threads, but I’m always cautious of walking the line between “pointing out a useful page/tool” and “advertising my web site”.
