The main meaning for 追い越す is “to overtake” (I guess that’s where the error margin came in) and as a non-native english speaker that’s indeed what I meant and couldn’t think of. But “to overcome” which I typed instead, actually means something different. I guess it could be a metaphorical translation of the word, though judging by the rest of possible translations, 追い越す has a more literal meaning.
