聞く as "to ask"

I know that there are other options: to ask - Jisho.org But I’m curious how often 聞く is used with that meaning? (It also apparently means a whole bunch of things, haha. Makes it a little confusing: Jisho.org: Japanese Dictionary but I’m assuming it’s understood in the context of the sentence?)

All the time. Whenever you are talking about asking someone something, at least.

ともだちに聞いてください。
先生に聞いてください。
お母さんに聞いてください。

ともだちに聞いた。

I heard from my friend/I asked my friend. Depends on context.
