これは一体何なの!?

Ok, so I found this word in my grammar book: 訊く
Apparently, it’s the same as 聞く (at least according to Jisho). Does anyone know what the exact difference is between the two?

The kanji seems to have a nuance of asking a question, so probably a (archaic?) way to differentiate that?
聞くcan mean both ask and listen right?

I recently found this on Japanese Stack Exchange.

Basically, 訊く sounds more like “to inquire” and is more refined, which the kanji being used to indicate as such.

I’m stealing this from @mamimumason’s awesome article, but:

聞く means “to hear a sound,” “to take into consideration,” or “to ask.”

話し声が聞こえました

I could hear someone talking.

私の言うことを聞いてください

Please hear me!

訊く means “to ask a clarifying question” or “to search for a clear answer” and is mostly used in writing.

どうしてそんなことを訊くの?

Why do you ask me such a thing?

ペットボトルはどこに捨てればいいのか彼に訊いてみます

I’ll ask him where we can dispose of these plastic bottles.

Here’s the article:

Similar to 見る and 観る, isn’t it?
