Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Discussion Questions

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!

  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?

  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

  4. Was there any difficulty with the search?

  5. Did the meeting at the gate go as expected?

  6. How have your theories updated with the new information?

Week 18

Cliffhanger week! Whoever sent the drones didn’t seem to be trying that hard to kill our duo, easy fight. I have to wonder what the purpose of luring them specifically out of town was.

Sewer monster #1 kicked my butt, but thankfully sewer monster #2 was a breeze. I got lucky at the start and confused 2 of the big guys with one hit from Tita (using 混乱の刃) and they mostly shot each other to death.

Between this game and xenogears, I’ve been playing a lot of low-poly 隠れんぼ lately. Though compared to that game where the kid hid in corners you could only see by turning the camera just the right way, this one was pretty easy. Even if you don’t quite understand the current clue, you can go around talking to shopkeepers until you find the next one.

Kanone is back from spying on the castle, and she’s kidnapped Dunan! I dislike both of these characters and don’t care what happens to them tbh. Are we going to have to rescue him? I don’t wanna.

So Ren hears Joshua’s description, that Estelle’s looking for him, and that the two of them parted badly. The next day she happens to get a letter from a guy of the same description and the letter is about how Joshua wants to talk to her despite parting badly. Yeah, sure.

I also had another thought about her parents acting odd, from the info from last week. Acting absent-minded, not all there? Those aren’t Ren’s parents. Those are robots.

Kids Return (1996)

Ok I really think they’re pushing it with this riddle stuff at this point. Yeah, alright, being really annoying is what Renne does. Even with that concession the hide and seek is a bit much now. It would probably help if they didn’t also opt to put the phantom thief treasure hunt in this same chapter for some reason. What’s up with Renne making these weird riddles anyway, is that guy her dad and she learned it from him?

Anyway I’m starting to see why her parents are so desperately hiding from being reunited with her. This is another case where I wish the cast wasn’t so saccharine and would be like “Hey, there are a lot of shady villains around so do not ever wander off again so they don’t kidnap you; we’re also doing actually important business in between you doing that so when people literally die and we’re busy following your clues that’s gonna be on you too.” You’d think Agate would do that. I feel like he lost his whole edge way too fast actually; at first I liked the character growth when it felt like a smaller change but he’s starting to feel like he got absorbed into the general party’s vibe too much. I’m tired of the searches right now so I just looked these up, had also not remembered at all that there was a fisherman’s guild to begin with.

That said I did enjoy my trip back to the sewers. The boss fight was nothing special, but I decided hey we’ve been going pretty deep into here and there’s that spot with a lever that’ll connect to the other exit, finding that might just be easier, so I pushed deeper. Lol. That turned into a giant labyrinth trip, but it was worth it! First I came back to the hidden door we used at one point, but it was totally blocked. But in addition to a few other treasures (better shoes, a +3 range accessory for shooter characters), eventually there’s a bridge where you get a little event and a bunch of enemies run at you.

Following that was a trapped chest, and this nice armor:

It was a very long trip through the sewers with those annoying enemies that occasionally instant kill you really densely packed in some spots. This won’t matter for anyone not on Evo version, but since we attack on the field to get the battle start, times without Olivier kind of suck because his attack has good range and comes out basically instantly; the melee characters are bad at hitting backs by comparison (and Tita’s is crazy slow).

Eventually we found that lever, lol. This is the kind of time I’m especially glad this version has no way to warp out like they put in the remake. Finding and fighting the monster in the sewer was basically just crossing an item off a list, barely worth mentioning. Getting deeply lost in the nightmare labyrinth knowing that we’ll never see the sun again until we find our way out properly made this one of the more memorable things that’s happened in SC.

Random side thought, but walking in a coffee shop, asking for a recommendation, and being told “coffee” is fucking funny. Dude hates us.

Anyway Estelle’s desperation at the mere mention of a chance to see Joshua works great, but I do think Agate is kind of stupid for not at all considering this could be an obvious trap. It’s all I expected it to be, for sure. Fun to have a new party member anyway. And while it’s kind of unfortunate that the game lets him get away with pushing his explanation til later, having Estelle immediately go “Why would you possibly know all that?” is SO refreshing compared to the endlessly nodding zombie that Fei is in Xenogears.

I really hope @Sasabonsam is right about the robot theory somehow because that’s so funny. Also I forgot to turn in the sewer monster hunt but I’m assuming I’ll get another chance.

You mean where there’s the three little sticky out bits? That must be an EVO thing, I wasn’t blocked off until the door into the actual cellar.

Nah those are there, I mean kind of around that area you can enter a big room with some laterns and stuff? It’s like one door over from the door leading to the chest with the monster and armor. From there there’s a stairway up to a small room that is where the hidden entrance was and the game gives a message about the 隠し扉 being completely sealed off, something like that.

I may be going a bit far with the weird theories, but it would absolutely be funny!

Aw, Fei is deeply traumatized! But I agree it’s great that Estelle doesn’t just shrug off that Kevin knows more than he should. That was a bit of a weird moment for me because I can’t tell how secret his job is actually supposed to be. He seemed comfortable enough coming out and exchanging info with the bracer B team, Estelle can’t be all that different.

Trying to be constructive here but why don’t we just abandon the little ガキンチョ ?

Exactly my reaction! You can keep him…

I like Kevin. I hope we’ll get some proper explanations for who he is and what he does.

I agree regarding Agathe being braindead lately. The most obvious nonsense going on this week and he just tags along.

I was hoping that we would leave for Bose soon because I just don’t like Grancel very much, but it looks like we have quite a lot left to do here…
