空の軌跡 // Trails in the Sky ⚔ Story Club・Week 27

Pssh, just because I’m wrong about one character doesn’t mean I’m wrong about another one! Besides, the evidence for クローゼ is much stronger than it was for sky pirate girl :triumph:

New week, new chapter

Ok I think we should have seen it coming that another person was mind controlled

Very exciting developments. Loved how intense Yoshua was.

Oh and I loved that they showed Estelle defending bullets by spinning her stick, I assume that’s some kind of technique.
Such techniques need to exist in this universe because there are advanced guns, otherwise melee fighters would be pretty much useless in this world.
And still I haven’t seen many other games do this! (except Final Fantasy 7)

In FFX there’s a cutscene where you get arrested by gun-wielding soldiers, which you easily defeated minutes ago in combat. In cutscenes, guns are lethal.
(though again, I try to ignore ludonarrative dissonances like this because they’re almost inevitable)

I’ve been getting more and more curious about the remake and how they will do certain scenes, so I’d definitely love to play it. Though I’m not sure if I want to pay full price for it.
E.g. how they do the play and the costumes, the amount of people at the festival, cutscenes (more than wiggling sprites on a screen), how big and/or nice looking cities will be, and so on. I think it would be a lot of fun to revisit the game that way.

One thing I dislike about the remake is that I find the art style very generic. If I didn’t recognize the characters you could easily convince me that it was a Chinese gacha game à la genshin impact.

I haven’t seen too much of the Remake yet, just parts of trailers, but it looks exactly like Evo in 3D to me.
It’s probably a bigger jump from the non-Evo version with the older portraits. The Evo portraits are very close to the 3D models as far as I can see.
Besides, Genshin is a beautiful game visually imo.

Well I’m not too fond of the Evo art direction either to be honest, which is why I play the original version. I gave my impressions here:

I like Genshin character art generally, though. But 3-D characters of other series vary in quality… (Not just the hardware, I guess.)

For 空の軌跡, I like original forward facing chars (and also the sprite work), more than Evo. (and chars changing from 45 degrees to forward facing is fun)

I don’t find the Genshin style bad, I just feel like it’s been emulated and copied so much that it feels generic to me. This is a problem I have with most anime-adjacent Japanese media these days though, everything feels like a copy of a copy of a copy.

The animation/cinematography of the remake seems pretty decent though, based on the trailers. It really adds a new dimension to the story.

I like the older, “90s anime” style as well, would be cool if some new anime and games adopted (and polished) it, and in fact I’m almost certain that will happen, not only for nostalgia but also to set oneself apart visually.

But I like the modern style too, I think you can be as expressive as in the 90s style, it’s just not always done because of modern production processes and time constraints, or something.

I’m pretty sure you can also make the case that a lot of the 90s style looks the same, we just don’t mind nowadays because we see it less often, it’s nostalgic, and so on.

(and then there are probably some old timer Tezuka/Astro Boy fans who like the ~60s style that was closer to American comics (I personally can’t stand at least the American “Disney” style, which is why Cuphead is repulsive to me. Even though I grew up on Disney cartoons), and for whom the 90s style was already too unified, too sexualized/sexy, too polished and samey, plus they don’t even have significant noses anymore!)

Technically all advantage the non-Evo version may have optically is a few nice 2D images (portraits) per character, and maybe some nicer textures. All of that can be achieved in a modern style (emphasis on “can”, I guess).

Just keep in mind that it’s probably not a coincidence that most people prefer the style or art that was dominant when they were young, and that what came before or after is less appealing

Yeah I recently stumbled on a clip of the original and went wait, yeah, this is so much better looking than Evo. I think I’ve gotten more picky about that in the time since we started the club, haha. Evo was just so convenient but a part of me would like to be on the other versions if I wasn’t committed cause of save carryover and etc.

What really bugged me was hearing the voice acting in the remake now that I’ve played a bunch of the original. They changed the voice actors and that is NOT Estelle and of what I heard, I kind of hate it by comparison.

Week 27

やっぱり indeed… エステル hurts herself in confusion.

Not just a gun, a god damn rifle. I was a bit surprised they did end up shooting ギルバート in the leg – this game has been so safe since the beginning, nothing really bad has happened at all. I guess the stakes are slowly getting higher?

Oh クローゼ… you’re wrapped in something much bigger too?? Feels like エステル is the only character in the game without multiple layers of surprises in her.

Won the boss fight, lost the cutscene energy here… but good to know that things like this exist.

Whoops, ヨシュア getting a little scary there. I guess it’s only fair to be saved by ex machina when the tables only turned because of ex machina? Nice to have it on my side for once.

Ah, so クローゼ has military on hotline. That’s useful to have… Cool entrance by ユリア and 《アルセイユ》.

クローゼ was pretty happy with how that went.

Wild ending to the chapter, feels like the story went up a gear.

Yeah, I think he has been putting on a persona this whole time, since the beginning of the game… I get the feeling he might have been a child soldier or something, who カシウス saved.

Haha, me too! I might have been wrong about ジョゼット but I feel like this time it’s bound to be true…

I guess my screenshots may give some idea. It’s been fantastic so far, but of course I haven’t played the original yet so I can’t really compare.

Broken screen-space reflections. Literally unplayable.

I didn’t notice that at all. I guess it’s a curse to know too much about graphics processing sometimes, haha.
Maybe it’s an intentional artistic effect

Here’s the scene in motion, there indeed is something funny going on in the reflection behind クローゼ. Maybe it’s somehow the ship 《アルセイユ》 right in front of them?

I didn’t mind, it’s there for a second.
