Home Thread 空の軌跡

This week we’re playing to the scene with the spinny saw thing. Or, 8 bullet points in the main quest page of the notebook.

Side Quests
  • 臨時司書求む
  • トラット平原道の手配魔獣

Both can be completed immediately.

Hidden quests:

  • 臨時司書の残業

  • 続・臨時司書の残業

  • 続々・臨時司書の残業

How to find: Complete the previous step of 臨時司書 for each of them You can run around doing all that immediately or work on it throughout the chapter.

All books found for the library can be read. They’ll be on the shelves after you hand them in if you want to come back to them later. IMPORTANT: 猫語 can be used to translate all cat dialogue for the first five games. I strongly encourage you to read this book.

You might also want to grab some tomatoes whenever you stop by.

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Discussion Questions

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!

  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?

  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

  4. How is Antoine today?

  5. What are your thoughts on the blackout?

  6. What do you make of the new people we’ve met?

I assume this is a cat I didn’t notice or something? Wanted to put my new knowledge to use but haven’t met one yet. Next week for sure I’ll hunt one down.

For reference, I saved all the language images

Spoilers

So I started off with the side quests. Did the main part of the book one this time. I figure these chapters always have us run around the local area so maybe I can find the harder books in the meantime, or at least buckle down and hunt for them later on when I have a better mental map of the place.

That combat one was rough though; I didn’t expect the game to give Tita back so soon so I did it with Estelle and Joshua only. That went badly until I dumped all of our money in upgrading all of our equipment; most slots have pretty significant upgrades compared to what I had on them, and I also needed 気絶 prevention accessories. With that all together, the duo pulled through.

So this orbment has kind of an EMP effect, and one that activates automatically in a seemingly defensive capability when other energies act on/near it. I’m curious if there’s a way to manually activate it as well or not. This seems… dangerous! Pretty much everything in the world runs on this stuff, right? You could take this on a flight and crash it. This feels like it’s going to be core to some scheme, maybe what Cassius is chasing down now? I’m very interested in the big world implications of this and people who should be on the forefront of knowledge about this stuff seem totally surprised by what it does. So I also wonder where it came from. Place names in this series trip me up but they were saying this whole technology was brought in by this 博士 from another country(?) or whatever where he worked with the original inventor, so perhaps it’s another place like that? Could the original inventor himself be involved? Hmm.

I quite enjoy Tita and her grandpa; she’s on that line where I could see her being annoying to some people but I just think she’s cute. His character type is nothing new but they’re really committed to seeing it through and the interactions were just a joy to watch. I take my coffee the same way he does.

I’m not feeling like there any secret villains so far, but we are likely to need some crime to clear up if getting our Bracer qualifications here is going to proceed the same way it did elsewhere. This big orbment lab is an obvious target… are we going to lose the black orbment? Maybe not, but until more things happen I’m just taking stabs in the dark.

I knew I forgot to do something

I had quite a bit of cash last week so I bought all the gear in the Zeiss shops as soon as I got there, leaving me broke.

As I was equipping it I noticed that I had a powerful weapon for Estelle that I forgot to equip for I don’t know how long (more powerful than the one I had equipped until now, but less powerful than the one I just bought in Zeiss).

It’s interesting coming into every new RPG series and having to feel out how much they actually want you to use the shops or not. There are a lot that let you completely ignore them, and if you explore a bit, probably reward you with stuff better than you’ll find in the store at most points in the game. I’m learning by now that this game is NOT that, haha. And honestly that’s probably good, yeah give us nice rewards for exploration but if you’re gonna have stores it’s nice if there’s a reason to use them.

Yeah you can definitely find good gear in dungeons but not really enough to make shops redundant.

工房長

A helpful, moustachioed city leader?

Let’s just save some time and call the army immediately before he sets nearby orphanages on fire.

This week

So, I missed the monster on the way into the area so I ended up exploring the entire region, including the local tower which was surprisingly easy and contains a ton of valuable quartz and gear (that outclasses the stuff I just bought :weary:). With a couple more levels and upgraded gear and orbment setup I feel OP.

Yeah I think some kind of terrorist attack is planned on the capital and this could play a key role.

I missed that but admittedly because of the above-mentioned extracurricular activities this was a fairly long week for me, by the end I was going through the dialogue without looking up much of anything and didn’t understand 100%. What I did get is that R博士 is the 第一弟子 of the person who discovered/invented orbal energy.

I also think that they mention that the black device is modern (and not one of these ancient artifacts?) but I don’t get why. At any rate they were surprised not to find a serial number and expected that it could have an 後ろ暗い purpose (I like this expression!).

I also expected that the energy source they would use to cut through the device would be the geothermal energy from the onsen but apparently they prefer internal combustion engines. No I’m not obsessed with onsens shut up.

By the way during the dinner discussion Estelle at some points used the expression (?) 血を争わない or something like that and I couldn’t make sense of it nor find it in my dictionaries. Does anybody have a clue?

I would guess they’re using their third definitions, so “won’t deny feelings.”

Oh thanks! But she did use を and not は, right? That said I should have checked は/が/の too.

I just double checked and it was Joshua, and the line was indeed “血は争えないってやつだね。”

Ok they probably changed it in your version. That’s the only explanation.

Oh by the way, I found it weird that Joshua knew that famous orbment scientist by name but didn’t connect the dots with R博士 for some reason.

I ended up not doing the combat quest this week because once you start the main quest up, ティータ doesn’t let you leave town. I’ll get to it first thing, next week

future crimes

I don’t think this is at all a stab in the dark, there’s reason to believe the blackout is going to be the inciting incident for a big crime. If the conversation with 工房長 can be taken at face value, about the orbment being newly made rather than an old relic, we can assume it’s probably stolen and not just found by the sender. Otherwise there’d have to be some convoluted reason why they couldn’t get information from someone who was involved in making it. If the original owner is looking for it, the blackout would be the obvious sign that leads them to it. And if they’re as shady as they’re implied to be, they’ll probably do crime to get it back!

It could even be the recurring masked guys. Only a mysterious black-clad organization would produce a mysterious black orbment, the aesthetic connection is undeniable. Mmhm. (Please ignore me)

Well presumably at some later point we’ll be able to leave town with Tita but at least I feel less bad for doing it right before she joined now.

I hope your won’t run out of time, I think the quest had a 低 deadline.

It should be ok! It started at long and last I checked, when doing the mandatory report to the guild, was at medium.

If you want me to confirm whether or not it will expire, not yet.

I guess it should be fine to make Tita let leave town, but not go to Onsen yet?
