Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Last week! I’m happy to have made it so far (even if it was only 5 weeks ) but this was still my first book club here, so it’s really nice to see it till the end. I started on chapter 9 yesterday, so only 1 to go now.

I just had a small question regarding a certain kanji up to now:

Question

Can someone help me with the reading?

I’m also curious to know if others are going to continue to the next beginner book club, take a break or join a different book club

It is 墨液. Btw, I had a hard time with the first kanji. After finishing the chapter, thought it should be something mangaka use. So, I guessed the meaning first and found the kanji later.

I thought it could be the case. I’m surprised jisho doesn’t even recognize it as a word  at first I was really confused because I thought it was just the kanji for written weirdly, but it was something else indeed

I just finished! This is my first book club too!! Even if it was just five weeks you stuck with it! Finishing books is always a nice feeling haha
I think I’ll join ongoing book clubs if its a book that interests me enough and is something I would have read anyways (like nozaki-kun! I had already bought it so it was perfect haha) Either that or there’s a few things I want to read that already have past book clubs too ^^

I just wrapped up myself. It was a cute manga, but definitely taught me that 4Koma just isn’t my cup of tea, I think. It didn’t really feel much more difficult than what I read on my own, but something about the format just doesn’t appeal to me. I can’t quite put my finger on it. The requirement to deliver a joke every four panels definitely makes it feel…forced? In a way. The jokes didn’t necessarily fail to land for me – I genuinely found them funny – but it was all a bit much.

I wonder if having watched the anime previously actually hurt this one a bit. I already knew what was coming, so the punchlines didn’t have the impact they could have otherwise.

I’m glad I read it though! It was enjoyable as a quick read, and there were at least a couple bits that weren’t in the anime, so those were nice!

I do plan on joining up for Komi-san, so I’ll be hanging out there. I’ll also be tagging along for Ruri Dragon back in the ABBC, and reading the IBC pick (僕が愛したすべての君へ) as well.

Other than that, pretty much just plan to keep plugging along in all the book clubs I’ve been a part of until now (Takagi-san, Ayumu, Mitsuboshi Colors, Shadows House, 神様がまちガえる), and just reading things in my own time! I also want to start playing catch up in the VN club for 9-nine. I really just need to block out some time for that. :joy:

Heh, I guess we might still see each other quite a bit, I’m also planning to join for Komi-san, Ruri and 僕が愛したすべての君へ  I wasn’t planning on trying Komi-san originally, but I read a couple of pages of the sample and thought I’d give it a try. I enjoyed the english release of Ruri dragon, and it shouldn’t be too much of a tough read so I’m also looking forward to that one. As for the IBC… I think it might honestly be too much for me at my current level, but I still want to give it a try.

I’m also quite interested in a couple of the past reads from the BBC, so I’ve started about a week or two ago to read 銭天堂. I have to say I was a bit overwhelmed at first reading an actual book, but I’m enjoying it so far and in terms of vocabulary/grammar it’s not too hard, which is also nice. So I might also do a couple beginner level books by myself before actually trying IBC books, but we’ll see how it goes the next few weeks!

Just finished too! It was a lot of fun. I forget who said weeks ago that the side characters are the most amusing part… that’s totally correct. If it were mostly just Sakura and Nozaki it wouldn’t stay interesting.

I enjoyed the humor most of the time, but the punchlines of every page because it’s 4-koma did seem a bit forced sometimes. I’m willing to give 4-koma another try, but this manga in particular seemed to have really crazy off-the-walls humor that always had me guessing if I translated something wrong.

I’ll probably join Komi-san and Ruri Dragon too. I definitely don’t have the time or experience to jump to the IBC yet though. One day!

Oh, I hadn’t seen 銭天堂 before but it looks interesting! I probably won’t have time for a while, but I’ve also been wanting to get into some easy novels. I looks more interesting than the previous BBC novel I’ve been thinking about reading (夜カフェ).

This was a fun manga, I was glad to revisit this story after watching the anime so long ago.

Huge thanks to @Phryne for running this book club!
