放浪息子 (Wandering Son) miscellaneous discussion

General chapter 39 comments

I got a lot of laughs out of this chapter, like the scene with Maho on page 144.

Also, hearing yourself on a recording is always so weird. Poor Mako thought he sounded cuter.

Also, looks like there’s color pages at the start of chapter 40! Hopefully they continue doing that from now on!

Chapter 22 was kinda hard to read (in terms of Japanese).
Plus I feel like I’ll never quite understand the nuances of なんか.

Chapter 22 Page 122

自分なんか 女のかっこして喜んでるような
This is after being called a coward, so I interpresed as something like… “What about you? Enjoying looking like a girl.” But I’m not certain about the nuances…
And then (Mako?) says ようななんですか? and I’m not too sure about that either. Is the offense just at the “look like” part or am I missing something else?

I’m not looking at the book right now, but if I remember correctly this was when Maho was mouthing to Mako, and the important thing here is that ような was about to modify something, and Maho stopped just short realizing what she was going to say (and in front of her brother, who she would be indirectly callong the same thing). Mako prompts her to finish, with the ようなんですか?
If I remember correctly Mako then says that they had the feeling that Maho was about to say something terrible that Mako could never forgive, but since she stopped short, fine. So yeah.
Dunno what she would have said. I guess something like オカマ, but I don’t really know how to hurt people in Japanese.

It took me several reads of that page to understand, but it’s what @QuackingShoe said. Maho cut herself off before actually saying the derogatory word/phrase that would have followed ような, which is the only reason Mako lets the slight pass.

And I posted an explanation of the rest of the page after that here.

Chapter 40 was a nice read (though poor Takatsuki). I love how ちーちゃん just does whatever she wants! Also I read the last 7 pages without looking anything up, and I’m pretty sure I understood almost all of it.

Only thing I didn’t quite get was:

Page 174

まほ:なに~~~ お前ら ヨリ戻っちゃてんの?
シュウ:そんなんじゃないよっ

Maho says this to Shuu and Takatsuki. Is she joking that they got back together or something like that? That’s just a guess since 戻る can mean “to return” and by Shuu’s response, but I really have no idea.

That’s how I read it, if I remember correctly which part you mean.

Whoa as usual I was missing something crucial. It seemed weird but it didn’t occur to me that the sentence wasn’t finished.

Humanity is safe for now.

That was really useful, I would have never figured those out on my own.

Chapter 23

Whyyyy is does ユキさん behave like a pervert around 高槻. Noooo. Stooop.

Chapter 24

Page 155: 人コケにしやがっておぼえてろよ
Not sure what this means.

My girl 真穂 beating 瀬谷 for talking crap about 修一.
He’s in too deep anyway.
Oh, and it looks like we are getting ourselves a new character maybe :open_mouth:

Good thing I just reread the last chapter of volume 5 before starting volume 6. Somehow I completely forgot about the cliffhanger ending.

I just read chapter 43. It was super weird because one of the scenes I could picture right out of the anime. That’s the first time that happened so far reading the manga.

I feel like chapter 45 just trolled me by writing 行ないます. I was so confused, but apparently you can also write 行う as 行なう…

So instead of buying the next aria yesterday, I actually went ahead and rented the rest of this series. Hm. Well, guess I’ll have to let them rot until a day before I have to return them read them now, then.

Oh no, I was hoping to catch up to you before you started again!

How come you don’t borrow just a few volumes at a time so you don’t have to rush?

They are packaged as a set.

Interesting. Are things often bundled like this in libraries in Japan?

I have no idea. That’s the first manga I ever rent, ever. I usually just buy and sell later.
I was complaining that I couldn’t find the second volume at book off when my spouse told me to check if it was at the library. I just asked at the counter if they had it, and the clerk just came back with the (previous) bundle. I don’t even know where they are stored :stuck_out_tongue:

First question (I feel like asking) in a while. In chapter 47 (which is apparently mislabeled as 45).

Page 128

お前にロミオなどと
いう名前をつけた
覚えはない

覚えがないのも
無理のない話

昨晩寝ないで
考えてようやくつけた
私の名です

I split the words how they were split in the book since it wasn’t clear to me if (for example) つけた was modifying 私, or if it’s supposed to be the end of a sentence.

  1. I’m not really getting what 覚えはない・覚えがない means.
  2. Is this Juliet basically saying that she (or he in this play? I can’t keep track) wants to take Romeo’s name? Or maybe I’m mixing something up because of the parts I’m not getting? Or maybe I’m not on the right track at all…

I mean, it seems like this is just here to push the story forward with Takatsuki suggesting they switch names, but I’d still like to understand it better.
