噂 (うわさ, rumor) is a level 33 Kanji and vocab.
I use both the WaniKani website and the Flaming Durtles android do my lessons and reviews.
I noticed that the Kanji looks slightly different on the WaniKani’s webapp versus Flaming Durtles.
The webapp specifically looks like this:
Everywhere else (manga, anime subs) I have seen the kanji drawn with more of a ‘hat’ looking radical at the top, rather than the ‘horns’ we see in this image. Even when you type 噂 into the forums, you see the character drawn in this more ‘common’ style/font.
Is anyone aware of why there is this difference? Is the version seen in the screenshot just an older/newer/alternate way to draw it?
It depends on the font your device is using. Non-jouyou kanji haven’t been as standardized as jouyou kanji, and so modifications that have been made to similar shapes sometimes get made to them, and sometimes they don’t.
On my phone, all of the kanji look exactly the same as your screencap. It’s a font difference thing.
I once thought that the が (仮) in 平仮名 could be represented by two different kanji. I saw the term with a “different” kanji on Anki. So, I copied the character into Jisho and hit enter. Seconds later, I realised that I had probably copied the wrong character, because it looked completely different, it was the kanji, temporary (仮). So, I copied and pasted it again. Same results. Then I realised that it was the same character, different font.
