I was wondering if anyone had alternative mnemonics for 味方’s meaning (ally) because WK’s just isn’t sticking at all. The reading is easy, but the meaning eludes me.

Supporter? Backer? Theoretically “friend”, but not in the 友達 sense.
EDIT: I missed the mnemonic part of the question, my bad

This is a very common word thankfully. So if you take up watching anime, you’ll soon run into it in the wild!
While mnemonics are great, I can honestly say that they’re not match to just seeing something used in a situation that I can memorize. So, keep on watching and consuming Japanese media, and this vocab will soon be memorized I think. ^^ (especially if it’s from some shounen/action genre XD)

My issue is that often times I can make the connection in context, but when faced with just the kanji, I have trouble. I have the same issue with 苦手 where I know the word, but I have a block when making the connection between the kanji and the word/pronunciation.

And then sometimes, you get kanji that comes and goes, as to comprehension. I wished it was a more straight lined business to memorize these, but nope! XD

I keep confusing it with 仲間 (in both directions), which one is ally and which one is companion. This post might help though!
