北海道 hiragana in WK?

Wondering if anyone can tell me why I can’t seem to get the hiragana correct for this on the WK app. I get the “close” message. I just wound up doing workaround where I type the (what appears to be the same–small っ) hiragana somewhere else then copy/pasta into WK and it works. I’m not having issues with any of the other hiragana combos at this point, so kinda lost what I’m doing wrong here.

What are you typing exactly? hokkaidou should give you the correct input.

The small っ is inserted automatically if you double the consonant (kk in this case). Alternatively if you really need to type it on its own you can use “xtsu” or “xtu” (prefixing a kana with ‘x’ makes it small).

What are you typing that’s not working? It should be ‘Hokkaidou’ with a double k, which would automatically change into ほっかいどう with the wanikani ime

I didn’t think WK had an official app. Which app are you using? How are you inserting little tsu (for example by doubling the consonant in romaji, by typing “ltsu” or by inserting the hiragana directly)? And can you cut and paste what it creates for you when you insert it the broken way?

Oh and if you use an IME to type Japanese usually (for instance in these forums), you probably want to turn it off for the reviews and use the built-in kana conversion WaniKani uses. Otherwise you can get weird conflicts at times.

I misspoke… I’m on the website (on very little sleep). I do the double consonant by habit, but also tried the x method. Last time I did it, I just typed the hiragana into search bar in another tab and copy/pasted into WK. I turned on the IME to do the copy/paste, so know that wasn’t the issue (and was on lookout trying different things since this wasn’t the first time it happened).

I probably should have done screenshot, but I was feeling a little weird/shy/ridiculous/whatever and took me a bit to get over that and just try asking here.  :joy: I’ll try to come back next review it shows up.

It’s not uncommon for people to struggle a bit with the IME, either because they’re not familiar with some specific quirk or because there’s an actual glitch in some browsers/configs. If you have the issue again try screenshotting it and posting it here, hopefully somebody will be able to figure out what’s going wrong.

The reason I’m trying to be specific is that I’ve Hokkaidou as an immediately available lesson and if I know which browser, which OS and exactly how you typed it I can try to duplicate the bug and figure out what went wrong.

Yeah, I think we need a screenshot (or a copy-paste) to see what the issue is, but to throw out another possibility, is they’re any chance you’re accidentally capitalising the H, and so getting ホっかいどう instead? WaniKani’s IME treats upper-case as katakana (which has long been the bane of people on phones).

On May 6th, there was a WK email “what´s new on WaniKani” that mentions that mixed kana answers are no longer penalised. If that’s the issue for OP, it would probably be some kind of glitch, since it seems they tried to patch out that behaviour.

This is quite interesting, because for reading, there is just right and wrong, no close callouts like meaning.
(Of course there are a few exceptions like 「反応」 which the correct reading is 「はんのう」, but typing 「はんおう」won’t deem it wrong and instead return the shake of shame to you. I’m not aware if Hokkaido has that shake or not though…)

Would be nice if we can get on some more information.

Well, it was either a temporary glitch, or I was having a very bad streak of doing something ridiculous that I still can’t fathom at this point because I just the card again and didn’t have any issues.

Woke up to all these posts and thought “yeah… this probably means it will absolutely just work fine” & I’ll feel silly because I had workaround anyhow. Although, on plus-side, I doubt I’ll EVER forget the kanji for this? :joy:

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. :slightly_smiling_face:

This basically sums up my feeling every time I decided to go and ask a colleague about something I’ve stuck on for few hours/days tbh…
Everything just works magically when someone else is watching.

It is 16:40 on Friday, I doubt anyone is willing to go back to their job tbh…
