I haven’t participated in the discussion a lot and read it in longer portions rather than following the schedule—sorry for that!

About the book: I enjoyed reading it in the sense that it was entertaining, but the 人質 premise didn’t feel like glue connecting these stories. I hoped they would be connected by the common 人質 theme at the end, but it was just another story (though one of my favorites in the book). As a result, I feel like I was attracted by a “clickbait” premise that never delivered :joy:

Also, the stories were mainly not about the narrator, but other people who made an impression on them. Although I found the stories interesting, I prefer stories where I can relate to the narrator themselves in the short-story genre.

At the end of the day, I think it wasn’t my cup of tea.

I think it’s really impressive that the stories are liked so evenly. Granted, not everybody liked each of them, but in general there was none that stood out - in either direction. I think that’s another proof of Ogawa‘s quality of writing :blush:
