Hello and welcome to our next Intermediate Book Club pick!
If you’d like to read along with us, please mark your participation in the polls in the OP.
Regarding the schedule, I’ve tried to calculate the page counts of the chapters from the ebook. (If anybody has a paperback version, I’d be grateful if you could tell me the correct page numbers!).
The book contains a prologue and 9 “nights”. From my calculations, it seems that if we group the prologue and the first night together, we get nine fairly equal chapters of 25-30 pages each. As the book is currently level 34 on Natively, I figured that it would not do any harm to take it a bit slowly and split each of the nights in half - that would give us 12-15 pages per week with a schedule of 18 weeks. (We can always adjust if it is a bad choice, either way.)
What do you all think?
Sounds like a reasonable initial plan
I would like to go faster (please explain)
I would like to go slower (please explain)
I have a different suggestion for a schedule (please explain)
So I get an average length of 248 for each night, which if we split each night in half would give 124 kindle locations per week, with relatively small variations (compared to 173 locations per week for 二重面相).
It’s a bit on the slower side, but given the structure of the 9 nights it looks fairly reasonable to me.
I’m bad at estimating how hard it is for people to keep up. We also have to take into account that 人質 is probably a notch harder than 二十面相 according to natively. On the other hand it’s also much more modern.
The currently 二十面相 I can easily do in one day. So I’m fine either way. Doing one night a week seems a little too fast, though, and slicing the chapters differently than roughly in half also doesn’t sound like the best of ideas.
As nobody opposed my plan to split chapters: Would you mind having a look whether there are suitable breakpoints in the middles of chapters? I trust real book pages more than my makeshift calculations Thank youuuu
Hey all, I was a bit busy in the meantime, but now I am ready to find a suitable schedule
We should keep in mind that this is the Intermediate club, with an envisioned schedule of roughly 15 pages per week (and this book is probably on the slightly harder side, according to its Natively level, so I would rather like to err on the easier side…)
Thank you for the schedule!
I think the 20+16 pages might be a bit tough, especially in the beginning?
I was thinking we could roughly break each night into half, spending two weeks per night. I think I read somewhere that the nights are basically independent, so to me it doesn’t make too much sense to read parts of two nights in one week, but maybe that’s only me
If we break it in half, a schedule might look like this, perhaps?

What I find really interesting is that this schedule is only one week longer than the faster one, although it feels much slower to me
We could maybe balance weeks 11 and 12 a bit better, and determine suitable breakpoints for weeks 3, 15, and 17. Also, I’m open to check back with everybody in week 13 regarding the reading speed, and maybe condense the last few weeks if we all think that’s a good idea.
What do y’all think?
I would prefer the 17 week schedule
I would prefer the 18 week schedule
I don’t mind either way
I have another idea for a schedule (please explain)
Thank you very much! It’s an excellent break, I agree.
I’ve combined the results of the two polls where everybody said it’s a good initial plan to split each night in two, and where everybody said they don’t care which schedule we will pick. We haven’t determined where to split the last two nights, but I think we can determine that closer to the date. The schedule (as it stands) is now in the OP. See you all on the 25th!
