ルリドラゴン ・ Ruri Dragon 🐲 Week 3

Page 28 answer (生えた vs 生えてた)

I think the difference is this:

  • 「生えたの?」 - Did they grow?
  • 「起きたら生えてたんです」- When I woke up, they were already grown. (They were growing before she woke up, and by the time that she woke up, the growing was already done, and they were in a grown state.)

(And I’m not sure if that is part of your question, but the 生えてる is 生えてた because the whole “When I woke up” thing she’s talking about happened in the past.)

Thank you! This cleared it up.

A lot of personal BS going on rn so I haven’t been able to be around. I’ll post my Week 4 answers this weekend, hopefully I’ll be around for Week 5.

まー後で詳しく聞かせて

vs

何かあったらすぐ言ってください

If both 聞かせて and 言って are to tell, when might one be used in favor of the other? And could you have rewritten the first sentence

まー後で詳しく言って

As far as I know (though not quite certain about the details), in this case 聞かせる is tell in the sense, that you tell someone about some story or a longer thing. 言う in the other sentence however is less “tell” in the traditional sense and more “say”. “If something happens, say it/notify me”. It’s just a short thing that’s meant to alert the teacher.

Small edit:
聞かせる could be used to replace the 言う, because it can be just for stuff you want someone else to hear, for example a cry for help, but less so the other way around. 言う almost always means “to say”, so it doesn’t really work for longer stuff.

Isn’t the 聞かせて more literally “please let me hear” – which is translated into more natural English as “please tell me”? The duality of 聞く was actually discussed today in The quick or short Language Questions Thread (not grammar).

I think that the (て form of a causative form of a verb (+ ください)) is used to ask for permission (“Please allow me to…” or “Would you let me… ?”):

Like:
意見を聞かせてください。
“Please let me know your opinion”

I may not fully grasp the nuance, but まー後で詳しく聞かせて (asking for permission) sounds a bit more polite than まー後で詳しく言って (request form).

Another Week, more Ruri. Ah, my brain! And the page count is increasing for Week 4. I might have to take it slow. Either way, I like the manga so far. There’s some funny jokes here and there. Slice of life has never been my forte, but I do really like the teacher. Hope he gets more dialogue later on. I hope I’m not making a lot of the same mistakes. I’m trying to translate the best I can into as natural of English as possible so corrections are always welcome as usual!

ルリ:「この先生ほんとゆるいなー」
Ruri: [This teacher is really lenient.]

先生:まじ?金尾休みか。
Teacher: Seriously? Kanao’s absent?

ルリ:「優しいし何でも寛容に見えるけどめっちゃやる気ないだけらしい。」
Ruri: [Since he seems kind and tolerant of anything, he just doesn’t seem very motivated.]

ルリ:「まあそんなもんか。」
Ruri: [Well, that’s the way it is.]

small corrections

That would be a bit different, though I’m not good enough to say what exactly it would be. This is more like “you wouldn’t wear(attach) horns for fashion”.

“Probably” would sound a bit more natural here

That however is more of a “Then”, as in “then that’s fine”

Notice the か, “Is it fine?”, more annoyed, less relieved

That’s not a since, that would be something like “から” or similar. This is “however”. “He seems kind and tolerant of anything, but really he just isn’t very motivated.” the らしい part is hard to translate here, because I wouldn’t say “seem” in this case

スルー is “ignore”, and 助かった is a common phrase for “thank god”. “Thank god the horns weren’t made a big deal” or similar

This somewhat lacks the nuance, that he’s asking to be allowed to join. Notice the て form.

Thanks for your help.
I’m still having troubles. I ran sudo apt install fcitx5 and put your three lines into sudo nano /etc/profile.d/fcitx.sh. But I don’t seem to have the file /usr/share/applications/org.fcitx.Fcitx5.desktop

You might need a frontend for it. Something like fcitx5-frontend-gtk3 fcitx5-module-xorg

Oh man, I installed fcitx5-frontend-gtk3 and now I have the american keyboard layout and I dont know how to change it back…
When I try to run Fcitx5 Configuration, I get the error You're currently running Fcitx with GUI, but fcitx-configtool couldn't be found, the package name is usually fcitx-config-gtk, fcitx-config-gtk3 or fcitx-configtool. Now it will open config file with default text editor.

But apt install does not find anz of those three packages.

Try apt install --install-recommends fcitx5, it should get you all you basically need for it

Edit:
maybe the command apt install --install-recommends fcitx5 fcitx5-mozc
is better, since that gets you mozc immediately

fcitx5 is already the newest version (0.0~git20200128.9e3bc8d+ds1-3).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
E: Unable to locate package fcitx5-mozc

Intereseting, did you run apt update before doing any of this to update the package indices?

I did, yeah.

Let’s move this into its own thread, otherwise this will be sort of flooded with offtopic stuff

Just want to once again say thank you to everyone on here! I’ve been busy traveling, but have been able to compare my translations to everyone else’s. Currently the only computer I have is my work laptop, which prevents me from downloading external IME apps. So I can either type in Japanese using my smart phone, or by using websites. Needles to say this is a tedious process that makes it hard to post complete translations, but it’s something I’d like to do at least once. @TeaDrinker3000 made a post about extracting text using google docs, so I hope to be able to utilize that feature this coming week and post more. Stoked for the next week!

If you can install browser extensions, using the Google IME is usually a good enough option, since you will be in your browser most of the time anyways.

When I need to type, I use something like this. I kinda wish I could just have that as a browser extension.
