Well. Well, well, well.
So it turns out the Santa costumes did have some relevance, and it wasn’t 葉月 in the end.
I’m… Fine with how things turned out, I think. There was one more twist at the end, but nothing that can’t be explained by what’s been revealed before. That’s one of the things I like about the slow pace 東野 takes with his long form mysteries. You can usually follow along nicely with the investigation. 
It was a good book. I mean, I basically read the last two thirds in one day. 
Good thing I didn’t have anything important to do today.
I wonder why the bereaved all pled for a lighter sentence. I guess because なお has shown some readiness for regret and redemption? And they’ve all had along time to come to terms with what murder means for all of them…
And well. I’ve read the blurb for the 5th book before, so I knew that 新田 would quit the police at some point. I was searching for (and finding) hints all over this book, so I wasn’t exactly surprised that he’d get a job offer. 
Though I do agree with 藤木 that he shouldn’t have had to quit just because a commoner got hurt. It’s not like the police is all mighty. But I’ve never quite understood the system the Japanese have of ‘taking responsibility’.
Anyway, I’ll probably end up purchasing ライフ when I’m in Japan in October. I don’t think I want to wait until 2028 for the 文庫本.
I remember getting all the notifications on the same day and thinking that this was crazy super impressed by your pace!
I mean, my pace increased a lot by the end, but mostly because I got too lazy to look up everything at that point. So my understanding wasn’t 100% towards the end. I hope one day it can be!!
One thing I didn’t get for example: what was the thing 入江悠斗 was doing while walking two hours every Saturday evening, something with 点字ブロック?
Interesting, I haven’t read it so I had no idea, didn’t expect it at all.
All in all I liked it okay, but I think my favorite is still the previous book, マスカレード・ナイト. I feel like this one ended a bit too abruptly, like they were in the dark for 99% of the time and then resolved it in 1% of the remaining time.
Sometimes I have readathon-like days when the muse strikes. 
I’m also in a bit of a weird personal situation at the moment where I have a lot of time I can potentially spend on reading.

We’re expecting a baby next year, and because of worker’s protection laws I’m not allowed to work at my current job while pregnant. So I’m not. 
I expect I’ll suddenly have a lot less time (and head space ) to devote to reading most of next year, unless we have one of those rare sleeping babies. But that’s also a reason I want to make a bit of a dent in my tbr while I can.
Do you remember what he was arrested for? A guy told him he wasn’t allowed to park his bicycle on the 点字ブロック (tactile paving as aid for the blind) and 入江悠斗 had a very small overreaction to that, putting him in a comatose state.
Apparently, after he got out of juvenile detention, when he went on those walks he’d move bikes and stuff that were on top of those 点字ブロック out of the way.
That’s why the mother of the dead guy had that strong reaction, since that was her sign that he had repented and her son’s death was not in vain.
Haha yeah, I can imagine. Knowing about it beforehand, there were some parts that felt like foreshadowing (all those mentions of a policeman becoming a hotelman being ludicrous, or 新田 being suited for it), but that’s also easy to take as simple scene setting.
Oh wow, wasn’t expecting that at all, congrats on the personal stuff and good luck too :-p (really wondering what kind of job you have too..!)
Yeah I remembered what he did, and I thought it would have to do with the bikes but 点字ブロック just made no sense to me in that context thanks!

I’m in care work, I think you’d call it in English? I assist a person with a physical disability in their day to day life. Both the working times (we work 24hr shifts) and the fact that it includes physical care (=infectious concerns) aren’t allowed for pregnant workers. Theoretically my company could adjust what I do / provide me with different work during that time, but I guess it’s easier for them to just pay me to stay at home than to come up with a job they haven’t needed so far every time someone gets pregnant.
Ahah, interesting. I was thinking more like secret agent or something where you had to lift 200kg per day xD
But sounds nice in any case, enjoy all the reading!
