Finished chapter 9! I’m feeling incredibly grateful that I’ve been reading Cardcaptor Sakura and have some familiarity with Kero’s Kansai-ben As usual I’ve been relying a lot on context clues and prior familiarity with Pokemon’s story. But I also found it particularly helpful in this chapter to think about what some phrases would sound like out loud rather than trying to look them up in a dictionary, since there’s so many non-standard spellings.
In terms of kanji/vocab, two words I particularly noticed were 転送 meaning transfer/transmission and 体勢 meaning posture/stance, which I can see coming up again later in the story.
It’s so cute that Masaki calls Red nii-chan I guess when you’re the size of a Rattata even little kids become big bros!
Don’t remember the levels but those are actually both WK vocab words too! So it’ll be nice to have the previous exposure when they come up in your reviews soon
Through chapter 9… and wow my first encounter with kansai dialect was not too bad! If I was listening, pretty sure I would understanding nothing, but with sounding it out and reasoning out the context, I actually feel like I got most of it (of course knowing Pokemon helps too)! Not going to spend a whole lot of time figuring out the nuances right now, but learning just through reading immersion some of the differences was fun such as さかい and the vowel switches!
That’s exactly how I feel about it! Of course we won’t know everything, but kids manga often has Kansai-ben speakers in it, and I’m sure Tokyo-born manga-loving kids don’t have classes on how to read it. The manga are written assuming the kids can figure it out from context, and we can do it too, it just takes a little more work
