Characters and concepts
Multiple races exist in Dungeon Meshi. The five major races are Tallmen/人間 (baseline humans), Half-foot/ハーフ フット (Halflings), Dwarves, Gnomes and Elves, but a few other species also exist which we won’t get into here.
Note that I’m not bothering to add words on diagrams and such (especially the nutrition ones) to the spreadsheet, but go ahead if it floats your boat - it’s useful for looking at nutritional information on food packaging if you are planning on getting some snacks, for instance
I love how Senshi makes a point of explaining that his name means “Seeker” in Dwarvish, because in Japanese it means “soldier”. (Probably why noone else stops to explain what their names mean.)
It’s ぬっ. Is sound effect for suddenly appearing out of nowhere. [citation].
I’d go with Klaust or something.
Spend the brainpower. You’ll learn something. For example: 花苔, イシクラゲ - Senshi literally tells Marceille it’s just regular algae.
The サカサイモ is fictional, mind, though the internet does suggest that if you want to try making this dish, you can substitute 長芋 easily enough. Even when they are fictional, though, it’s worth translating the names to work out the concepts that go into it - for example, サカサイモ is 逆さま plus 芋.
Ya made things weird by writing your reply inside the quote tags…
I got the first volume for free ages ago but heard it was hard, so I put off reading it. Today I was browsing my Bookwalker shelf and it caught my eye and I thought I’d sample it (not unlike Laios sampling the mushroom walker ).
I do want to read the series because it’s so highly recommended but not sure how fast I will read it!
For me it’s very hard. I rarely catch everything on first reading Atm I’m low on energy so I often check translation into my native language. But it’s also very well thought out? So it’s always fun to return to reading!
Also the club is only on volume 8 but I’m already thinking that it would be fun to reread the whole series because of all the details!
Yeah, I’m also finding it pretty tough. It seems to be pretty text heavy, and full of cooking/fantasy words… Plus all of the extra handwritten text and explanatory diagrams. It’s also more comedic than I expected for some reason, and I feel like jokes/gags can be hard to follow in manga when they rely a lot on surprise.
