Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Avoid posting any information from later in the game than the current week’s reading. If it is necessary to doing so, it needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1”]).

Week 18

Pretty straightforward this week, almost just dialog and fights, not too much to think about.
But that last fight, wow. I thought I would never make it, took me several tries.

Week 18

I don’t remember if I praised it before, but the way this game combines 3D models and 2D spritework feels almost one of a kind. We get these very cool cockpit graphics, where you can contact one gear from another. Makes total sense.

Cool support attack. (バルト can use this a special attack from this point on by navigating “one up” in the command menu.)

Another plane model… because of course.

Haha. I think I missed this exchange with the nurse earlier.

I love when this game does multiple textboxes at once… synchronized laughs here, small objections there. A small touch that does a lot.

Oof, that slap.

Didn’t catch it in a screenshot, but the blue flash here was meaningful. ミャン takes control of the situation… and ラムサス is only too eager to pursue フェイ.

Small but valuable bit of info here: the gears record their sensors during missions. ミャン knows exactly what happened between these two.

Whoops. Crisis barely averted… シタン staying cool under pressure.

Our very first エアッド! エリィ can use it as a special attack from now on. (If you grinded for that One Item earlier, you’ll be completely unstoppable from this point on. Use this power responsibly.)

Just love how the camera is outside the タムズ in this shot. Another small touch that elevates the scene.

Love your comments, it’s so complete it’s almost a whole recap, I had forgotten almost half of the stuff already!

ミャン really taking her “憎まれ役” seriously this week :eyes: Never mind antagonizing ドミニア and hypnotizing Elly into almost blowing up the ユグドラシル, the real evil is being untargetable during every fight she participates in!

Stocking up on electric defense paid off for the last fight with ラムサス, he does scary damage without any. Most of it was on Elly and she was only taking 300/hit. Bart on the other hand with no extra defense took 900/hit, oof.

I want to express my admiration for big joe’s English here. Tbh the initial dialogue was better, but I missed my chance to screenshot it… If only he were a better card player.

Playing through this as an adult is making me really appreciate the artistic direction that made an impression on me as a kid  I also enjoyed that the bickering between the 艦長 and ハンズ happens while they’re observing the ユグドラシル battle through the window, and when ドミニア gets right up in Elly’s face during the first underwater fight.

I’ve been excited for 悔恨と安らぎの檻にて since the club started!

I considered combining next chapter (dungeon) into this week, but then Ch 36 would need to go forward and the next week few weeks are a bit longer than usual, so we’re sticking to schedule!

Finishing a bit late…

Weekly complaining about how bad the combat is in this game. I’m at the point where I wish I could activate a “story mode” option that would just skip battles.

I like how relatively chill everybody was as the reactor is clearly about to meltdown and the entire area is generally on fire.

I don’t really get the antagonism between Balto and and Ellie. I understand a general distrust but it seems more personal almost? Feels a bit harsh given the circumstances.

Ooh, that’s where he was. I searched for him in the ship several time and could never find it. I wonder if he’s still there now or if I missed it.

I don’t think the antagonism is unreasonable at this point. ゲブラー’s a direct cause of most of the grief in Bart’s and his loved ones’ lives, and it’s not like Elly’s been decisive in her rejection of them. At least, until very recently. Her strongest anti-ゲブラー moment was moving the falling bomb ship away from キスレブ, but he wasn’t there for that.
