Gameplay

Gameplay notes
  • It’s been a while since we’ve seen some of our party, so don’t forget to check equipment
  • You can change party members by talking to Margie/Maru
  • You can go to Nisan again if you didn’t pick up that OP equipment and wanted to grab it now that we have Elly in the party. Elly + Ether Doubler + Aerods = Easy Mode, for those who hate gear battles.
  • Optional: you can also visit the east dot to visit an Orphanage before going to the church HQ. We’ll be going here later, so it’s mostly extra dialog/picking up items early. You can nap here too to restore HP/EP.
  • Yggdrasil offers free gear HP/Fuel repairs (not EP) by just heading into the bridge, if you wanted to grind before heading to the church
  • You can check out a few other locations as well, but nothing we can do there yet. If you go to the Tower beware the flash when you approach
  • Consider talking stocking up on the Yggdrasil, especially ammo before next week
Unique Missables

At the Orphanage::

  • tell the kid in the loft you’ll keep the secret to get Book 1 Fun Picture Book/楽しい絵本
  • keep bothering the kid in the bathroom (rude!) for Book 2 Old Comic Book/ボロボロのマンガ. you get what you deserve
  • Show the boy in the room next to the bathroom the Bell Amulet. Note that Rico must be in the part for this. There is some different/interesting dialog if you first talk to him without Rico though. Get Book 3/『教会』の教え.
  • After visiting the church, now that Billy is there you can talk to the bird kid to herd three chickens for the Tag Badge/おにごっこバッジ!
"FMVs”

None.

Discussion Guidelines
Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Avoid posting any information from later in the game than the current week’s reading. If it is necessary to doing so, it needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1”]).

  • The description in the items menu for the books
  • Yes, in English the books in the items menu were just “Book 1” etc, presumably due to character limits

How do you catch the chicken??

chicken secrets

:chicken: You have to interact with a chicken every couple seconds to get it to keep following you.

:chicken: Lead it into the chicken pen to catch it.

Week 19

I went all the way back to Nisan to pick up an aether doubler since I had the money. Hooo boy, going across the world and finding that tiny patch of coast took a minute!

The dialogue with the kid & the bell was new for me. That poor kid’s poor dad! The game’s handing out some surprisingly obvious foreshadowing now. One of the priests in 教会本部 also says something that got me thinking wow, they’re just giving that away in random NPC dialogue??

The random NPC dialogue in question

After watching Bart and Billy’s scenes, maybe I gave Bart too much credit last week over his antagonism with Elly. There’s a spoiled prince aspect to his character that keeps getting him into petty fights like this, smh.

It was also nice of Billy to drop his tragic backstory that quickly, but I don’t know if you should be telling people you just met that you considered selling yourself into prostitution :joy: Maybe I got the timeline confused too, because I’m not sure when that would’ve happened. Before he trained at the church, after? Is an エトーン’s salary that bad?

yay!

Week 19 reply

That’s super cool  When we got in control of the ship I consider exploring but didn’t do it for two reasons: I don’t really like fighting in Gears, I feel like it’s hard to refill their resources. And in this game I feel like it’s dangerous to fight without Gears, because suddenly an enemy might appear that’s 100 times your size.
But really those are bad excuses, I found out afterwards that going to the bridge heals your Gears, for the second point I’m not sure if you can maybe equip your Gear if the fight has already started?
In any case I think that’s why I loved the sewer dungeon, I was 100% confident that you were supposed to fight not in your Gear in there xD

I wasn’t expecting that at all either! Really touching.

Can’t remember if I talk to this NPC or if this just went over my head, wouldn’t be too suprised if it was #2  thanks for highlighting it!

I think not liking the combat is a perfectly fine excuse not to wander haha. Gear combat is so simple that I spent most of that traveling time reading on my phone, mashing the O button (ps5 controller user here) when I got attacked and not looking at the game at all!

Haha I don’t blame you! I use the accelerate button from the emulator a lot during combat :x

Done! I like Billy. I think he’s currently my second fav after Citan.

I definitely agree about Bart still having a bit of that spoiled prince aspect. Him getting petty over Billy being close to Sigurd was funny. Billy being equally petty with only Bart was also funny.

I got a couple screenshots but I switched to my steamdeck so getting them off is kind of annoying. I’ll have to grab them later.

If you mean getting into a gear while on foot, you can. You gotta toggle right then up in the battle menu. You can’t get out of them though.

I’m finally catching up but it’s hard. I have no idea who these people are and how we ended up here.

Hopefully I’ll piece it together soon…

Where is Fei again?

last time on dragon ball z

Fei and Elly got stranded on a conveniently placed barge, only to get rescued by a MAN. OF. THE SEA!

Shortly after since the world is the size of a potato and/or all plot points have to happen around our MCs (which may have actually been implied by SPOOG?) they notice a battle outside involving Yggdrasil 2: electric boogaloo. Because every one of a kind ancient technology comes in pairs.

Naturally they rush to help and Elly gets the shit beat out of her, kidnapped, slapped, then brainwashed to blow up the Ygg2. No one but Bart questions this.

Then the Thames gets attacked! Ramsus along with Myann and his capital-T-Trauma fight Fei and co. Myann mostly just stands there and heals, with a noticable lack of glowy blue brainwashing. Fei gets the shit kicked out of him, Elly gets Aerods and can now cheese every gear battle ever, and our motley crew heads back to the Thames.

Feis in a coma! Oops. Neither the ships doc nor Citan, our doctor who I am beginning to suspect does not have a degree, can help. But the church might! Too bad this organization of charity, selflessness, and devotion is by introduction only.

Conveniently! One is on board. I guess since Thames is on a job for the church it’s not… That… Surprising? So we go to find him, save his sister, Elly nearly dies again, and get our introduction!

Feis fine, just needs some sleep. But church guys dad Jesse knows Sigurd! So does Billy! (Which means he lived in solaris…?) As well as Citan who I am pretty sure is actually still a spy for emperor guy which makes them all hella sus. They get drunk! But only after strong arming Billy into not going alone for a job straight out of resident evil.

Fei is going to be SO confused when he wakes up.

Finally done with this section!

I’m still a little confused but happy to be able to explore the world map! I didn’t expect encounters while on the Yggdrasil but why not.

An orphanage standing alone in in the middle of nowhere? Uh oh.

I love all the small decorations in the rooms. This chair is amazing:

Being able to yeet the kid on the swing is fun too:

I love towers in JRPGs! HYPE!

I replaced Citan with Rico in my party before going to the church, I presume that he took over Citan’s dialogue? It’s weird to see Rico care outwardly that much about Fei’s situation, feels out of character.

Anyway, the story is spinning its wheels right now, unclear where we’re headed and why. I can’t say that I care massively about the backstory of all these side-characters.

There’s a lot of very interesting dialogue in the Church, but I admit that I got a bit lost in all the jargon.

Playing with big break between episodes does me no favor I’m afraid…

Really? I didn’t even think about it, it’s normal stuff when you are on a ship on FF so it felt normal to me

Yes! Finally jumping around all the time has a purpose

Death Stranding 2 is now complete, so I’m able to focus on clubs again. How lucky that I have so much piled up! Let’s get to it.

Week 19

Ah, the classic! Young ones are so soft these days, no longer drinking themselves to an early grave…

Mmm, is that you, Hideki Kamiya?

Yeah, what a sleepyhead…

The hidden room is not very hidden.

Holy shit… no thanks? There’s some item in the toilet that エリィ (wisely) won’t pick up.

Extremely minor details… but they paid attention.

ビリー was prepared to do anything. バルト was having none of it… LOL. I mean, 3000 G a night… That’s just two weeks for エーテルダブル.
