Ending Point
Find the town labeled アヴェ (…it’s Bledavik) on the map and save on the world map without entering.

Note: Optionally, you can go NW to a town called ニサン/Nisan (the entrance is near a tree in the NW) for some optional dialog + early access to some nice gear…that is probably too expensive for you right now.

Gameplay

Gameplay notes
  • Before resting as told to continue plot, you can exit to the world map to train if you’ve found yourself under leveled.
  • If you are on foot, you can call your gear in the middle of battle. Useful if you run into certain enemies. This is on the same screen as “Escape” and “Combo”.
  • Suggest you take this time to buy equipment for your Gears. You can find the better Gear Shop in the Yggdrasil hanger area, in a building with a guy standing in front. He’ll tell you 「ここはギアショップ。」
  • When you have manual control of Yggdrasil you can exit directly to your gears on the WM

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Avoid posting any information from later in the game than the current week’s reading. If it is necessary to doing so, it needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1”]).

To be clear double week means that we don’t get a new thread next week? :frowning:

Correct! This chapter will span two weeks, until December 19.

Now I have to wait 2 weeks :(

Good stuff this week, I’m sure I didn’t talk to everyone, but did quite a lot of them. It’s a really big place that opens to us between the Yggdrasil and the hideout. It was fun to explore them; there is a lot of life. People playing cards, some guy looking for which bed to take, everyone’s doing things and you can learn a lot about who winds up joining the “pirates” if that’s even an accurate term for what they’re up to.

Big discovery, I like how the sprites rotate with the camera movement so sometimes I play with that. This guy who is holding… something switches which hand it’s in when the camera is in different positions.

Sort of a random sound test here, it seems? Love the character design.

Hope you all had this interaction where Fei tells this kid they’re doing well, it’s cute. Then they jump, so fast and so much, forever. Random conversations triggering NPCs to change their actions and for some to appear and disappear, that’s what I mean. There’s a crazy amount of work put into making this place feel big and lived in and full of people doing things independent of you.

Man, you don’t know the half of it.

Alright so starting from there, we get a huge info dump on Bart’s past and stuff that I’d think would be held secret for longer from newcomers. I guess Bart feels a sort of draw to Fei and Sigurd knows Citan in some way so it’s not that weird. The main thing on my mind, hearing about and seeing the 絵巻物 of the special ancient gear, is that it feels like our characters are going to have second, better gears they get later? Who knows if that’s necessarily by the plot or an optional upgrade reward, but that big red mech tied into Bart’s backstory screams that it’s going to be his big permanent upgrade later on. And we have hints of something special for Fei in all the god killing talk too I think.

I like that Fei is still so averse to fighting, actually MORE insistent than before. I’ve decided the trajectory they went on with him is good and I can feel that this is all totally reasonable. As I mentioned before, it seems he doesn’t want to be in the gear but had previously been basically drained of the energy to even protest very strongly when faced with a crisis. Now that things have calmed down he’s trying to assert himself more. Ultimately by the end of this week that changes, so that we can play the game and have mech fights, but that’s fine. I’m happy they worked through that development more thoroughly to reach this point. Sigurd bringing Fei over to watch Bart’s monologue is one of those cheesy presentation things I’m choosing to roll with (I’d almost be tempted to call that an act to get Fei to help but I assume this game is just like that, JRPGs can be a little theatrical at times), but I do like the characterization we’re getting of him now. It’s nice to feel like I understand someone here.

I was unsure about the attackers but I believe right after there was a brief mention they were Gebler forces. Couldn’t read the fast text in time but one of them seemed pretty happy to attack children, so that’s our main impression of that group so far. Lovely. At least it’s funny when they zip away straight into space after you beat them, and their big boss weapon was a cross between a drill and a wacky arm tube man.

A lot happened so I’ll have to think about if more crosses my mind to add. I do want to ask, when you advise buying equipment for the gears, I wonder if I missed something – I saw a person selling Gear stuff but all the tune up options were the same things I bought in the cave. I guess I forgot to check again after adding Citan, so maybe that’s worth doing if I remember next time I boot it up (99% chance I won’t  ). Was it just that stuff? There’s also the more accessory style stuff, which I guess I could afford a piece or two of only, but decided against it for now.

At the Yggdrasil hanger you get dumped at right after the cave? There’s a small building where you can buy Gear equipment that’s an upgrade (primarily to HP and fuel). I actually bought mine last week so I wouldn’t forget. Since you got thru the rush this week though sounds like it wasn’t all that necessary.

…if a later gear shop sells worse equipment though that’s hilarious.

If I’m not mistaken, I think the store I was checking was near the cafeteria in the hideout. I know I also talked to the butler guy at a point when he was selling things in Yggdrasil but I don’t think it was that one with the gear parts. Regardless, yeah, while the cave boss last week took long enough to make fuel drain to the point I was a little nervous, we smacked the invaders around this week quite easily.

yeah I just got to that shop and it sells worse equipment than what’s at the hanger. I’ll add the better gear shop location to OP here shortly. I think you can still get back to it, if you did want to buy anything still.

When we see the 絵巻物

シタン asks waaaaaay too many questions, so suspicious! Glad that バルト calls him out on it too.

I had the same thought during the conversation with the butler guy, Citan is always like “Oh he is holding onto a secret treasure of sorts? Please describe its appearance in as much detail as possible” in incredibly suspicious ways.

Chapter 12

I’m going to enjoy SO MUCH the next game that I play that has a minimap inside dungeons / buildings >.<
That being said, still enjoying the game, just getting lost a lot. I liked that Fei is having a small rebellion and not giving in to what they want him to do so easily (even though we all know that he will eventually, he’s not going to just run away and go live hidden in a village, otherwise there would be no game).
The combats were not really exciting this chapter, the cave from the previous chapter was funnier, was really on the edge back there, here, I just pushed buttons and they all died eventually.

Definitely random. I used the save from the emulator to see if it was going to give me something different and it did. Was fun (and very random)

Thanks for the tip! Since I’m already done with the assignment, I might just do that. Depending on how expensive is too expensive, I have time to grind too.
I had tried going outside of the hideout earlier, but with just Fei and no gear, it was very ouchie. Now with the whole team of Power Rangers activated, it will be no problem!

Kind of put it off until this week but just finished up and I haven’t fallen behind.

Week 6 & 7 Play Report

I know it’s maybe a basic conflict, but I enjoy Fei being so reluctant to fight. But it’s something I felt set him apart from many other JRPG protagonists who are often quite happy to fight when pushed. It takes Fei time to come to it, and he still even then would rather he didn’t have to.

Bart is my boy. I might have a thing for rouges wearing eyepatches that have hearts of gold (looking at you, Majima from the Yakuza series). He is a fun character though, and getting his full princely backstory is cool. And getting some lore on an ancient powerful gear who might be related to what バル爺 was talking about in the cave (unless he meant Weltall…?).

This chapter did have some difficult passages in terms of reading, but ultimately I was able to pull through. Surprise in-game voices from Bart and Citan though! At the end of the battles in the hangar, they had some voiced lines which was a fun surprise.

I just started playing 10 minutes ago and intended to go quickly since I have two weeks worth of content to go through, but there’s no way I won’t explore every nook and cranny of this ship. I love all the small details they added all over the place. Many of these early 3D games often had relatively sterile environments due to technical limitations and also probably designers not being very comfortable with the new tools, but this is brilliant.

Indeed!

That’s nice and all but then you will never have time to grind the 38.000 gold to get a nice item

A little bit more meta discussion about this particular item… no story spoilers, but I’ll still tag the discussion as one – maybe you don’t want more info about this yet or at all.

This is easily the most broken item in the game. 90s JRPGs left loopholes like this in the game. It’s equivalent to switching the game difficulty to very easy almost right from the beginning.

I’m guessing we are all here to enjoy different things, and I guess even the insane grind you have to do moneywise to even be able to afford it here at the first chance is enjoyable to some, but to our first time players I’d cautiously suggest not getting or equipping this item, at least if you want the combat to keep challenging you. It’s unfortunately that good. I somewhat strongly feel that the game wasn’t balanced around this item properly.

Of course, many play JRPGs for the power fantasy aspects. You want to get ridiculously overpowered compared to the enemies you see – well, this is the fastest option to do that.

Not getting it here at the earliest opportunity doesn’t remove it from the game right away, there is a more “appropriate” chance later on to get it from here, but this is the only place where you can get this item until very late in the game.

Judge me as you want, but now you have convinced me, I want it

Absolutely nothing wrong with that! Not judging here, just a friendly word of caution. You will feel amazingly powerful and get to focus on the language learning aspects, apart from maybe killing bosses so fast that the entire dialogue doesn’t have time to play out…

There is another item coming later which combos off this one so insanely that I honestly believe they left this one in here as a debugging aid accidentally.

It’s also a nice play to grind. Unlike the cave, in the desert monsters don’t hit that hard so I don’t have the problem of having to go repair. Like someone else mentioned in a previous week, I can just use human mobs to refill my fuel. Then once in a while there’s a desert monster that gives a whole 1.000G. I already have 11kG, shouldn’t take that long!

I did it! Spoiler for the expensive optional item

Sitan almost died, very ギリギリ

Also what do you know, fish do not have money, they give 0G :woman_shrugging:

Now I want to find the shop fast so I will use this cool map this time:
