Thanks for making me notice that there’s an audiobook! Japanese Audible currently has a “3 months for 99 yen” thing going, so I tried my luck with my non-Japanese credit card… and it worked
Now I’m looking forward to this even more. Reading Japanese with audiobooks is such a good experience.
Yeah, I think as long as you keep that subscription (I think it’ll be 1500 yen per month after those first 3 months?) you can keep accessing the audiobook “for free” as part of the subscription. Paying the price for the audiobook would mean that you’d keep it forever.
I’m not planning to read this, but for those who are, the kindle locations are a good way to evaluate reading speed for the club.
Recent clubs have read ~200 kindle locations per week. [I think that might be on the upper limit of comfort for reading speed at ~level 31, but was comfortable when we were reading around level 28 with 赤川次郎]
Looking at the kindle preview, the prologue (11 pages) is about 100 kindle locations. So assuming the text is similar density, 19-20 pages might be fine
My listening is also worse than my reading, so what I’m doing is:
Listen while simultaneously reading until I hit comprehension problems (e.g. due to missing words).
Pause and look up words.
Go a bit back in the audio (e.g. start of the sentence) and repeat from step 1.
I’m sure that will make for worse listening training than pure listening, but it’s far easier and less frustrating (=I will actually do it) and I’m sure my listening ability will get something out of it.
More importantly though: I can do it faster and for much longer stretches at a time than both pure listening or pure reading! My stamina for pure listening is pretty low and my stamina for pure reading is decent to good (depending on my current interest level), but when I do listening and reading at the same time, my focus, attention span and reading speed skyrocket. I’m even blazing through stuff that I had to force myself to go through without the audio component. It’s great.
Never done a book club book on WK but willing to try! My last book was a L26, but it wasn’t super challenging , so this should be a good test of whether I can handle more.
Edit: will there be a link for where to get the audio book? I’m interested in doing both as a test.
Schedule updated in the OP! Since I only have the ebook, some of the page numbers (end page and page count) are approximations of the physical copy. Week 2 and 6 didn’t have any good spots for a breakpoint, so I tried to make the split not too awkward.
If someone with the physical copy would like to check the exact numbers, I’ll add it to the schedule table
