Yeah I wanted us to have a few weeks of full chapter weeks before we vote on pacing for the rest of the club. I was thinking of putting a poll either next week or the following to figure out what people want to do.
You can also make sure you have the ABBC club thread to watching since that will have announcements for all of scheduling.
Hello! I’m looking to get into reading for the first time. I just bought Hunter x Hunter on Bookwalker after seeing it on this bookclub list. Is it normal for the furigana to be this fuzzy when zooming in? It’s barely readable for me. I used the website’s zooming click button, it’s at 300%. I’m using macbook.
yeah, i think unfortunately so. at least—I just confirmed for Polar Bear Café that at 300% zoom on my mac in both Safari and Chrome the furigana are similarly a little pixellated and match the size that you see here. on the iPad app, I can zoom in further, but it remains pretty pixellated.
however, this is not the end. if the usual text is a visually ok size for you and you need to look up a word but can’t understand the furigana, i’d suggest using a dictionary that allows you to draw in the kanji. I use the Shirabe Jisho app (iOS). this will benefit from you knowing the general stroke order rules for writing kanji, but fortunately those are pretty simple.
Since we split the vote right down the middle, I’m actually going to have us do the third option. That will give some of our slower pace voters a bit more time with our one chapter a week, but we will eventually speed on up to finish the club out.
And after people see how much text is on a few of the pages in this chapter I think people will agree that one chapter a week for a bit longer isn’t the worst thing in the world.
To purchase digital books on amazon jp you actually need an entirely separate Amazon account with a different email etc. If you’re using a Kindle you would then have to log out of your regular account and into your alternate amazon jp account. It may also require a Japanese address, I’m not sure. I would Google around a bit for explanations on how to purchase amazon jp books on kindle.
They have gotten stricter this year. My Amazon Japan was working well until the end of December. Then, I tried to buy a book and it told me there was something wrong with my tablet settings and I couldn’t buy books anymore (I don’t have a Kindle, but the account was set up using my husband’s family address). I tried a few things, and Amazon wouldn’t let me change the country to Mexico or buy books with the Japanese address.
Basically, it was too difficult to fix easily, so I switched to Bookwalker, which has allowed me to get the books I want with no issues, and I got a substantial discount on my second purchase with Bookwalker.
Thanks for the clarification, I don’t use Kindle books for Japanese myself. I’ve definitely heard of people getting locked out of amazon jp accounts sadly I’ve used Bookwalker for a few years with no issues.
