How To Participate:

There are three editions of Cardcaptor Sakura, all of which can be used for this book club.

For the Vol 9 reading, you will need one of the following:

  • the original edition (OG) or refurbished edition (RE) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 9 (softcover, hardcover or digital)

  • the anniversary edition (AE) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 7 (hardcover)

Differences Between Editions

Card Captor Sakura has three editions: the original edition (OG), the refurbishment edition (RE), and the anniversary edition (AE).

  • The paperpack copy is OG, the original hardcover version is RE.

  • Digital versions are mostly RE, but some are OG.

  • To distinguish between OG and RE books, look between chapters. If there’s a picture of Kero-chan and the words “refurbishment edition,” you have an RE book.

  • The AE is a newer hardback edition. It has more chapters than either OG or RE books. For example, vol 1 of AE contains chapters 6 and 7, which are part of vol 2 for the OG and RE.

  • To check if your hardcover book is AE, simply look at the cover. It’ll say なかよし60周年記念版 on it near the bottom!

This reading is for カードキャプターさくら (Cardcaptor Sakura), NOT カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card). Buy carefully!

Schedule:

Note: all page numbers are based on the print version of the refurbishment edition (RE).

If you are reading the digital edition of the RE, the digital page count will be a few pages ahead of the print. Please check how many pages off your copy is before using the page numbers below.

If you aren’t reading the refurbishment edition, the page numbers will be completely different than those listed below. Please pay special attention to the chapter number and the last panel for every week, which should be the same between editions.

Week 1: Chap 35

A new volume for the new year! It’s a whole chapter this week. Let’s do it!

It seems like romance might still be in the air…?

I’ve been doing a very poor job of participating in the threads, but I’m still here and reading along!! Excited for volume 9

Whoof, I’m gonna be real, I’ve been busy with the beginning of the year so I only started this week’s reading today! Luckily I’ve gotten a lot better at reading so I got through half of the reading in one sitting. Wahoo!

It’s interesting to see a different approach to the beginning of the volume this time. I guess by volume 9 the mangaka figured we didn’t need another summary of the characters and plot – instead we’re thrown straight into like three different scenes! It’s interesting to see how things are moving along. Sakura’s relationship with Syaoran seems to be growing, and her dad’s finally talking with Nadeshiko’s grandpa. And then there’s poor Yukito! His condition has deteriorated quite quickly…

Same!! I should really stop being so surprised at how reading more Japanese makes you better at reading Japanese

Still have the back half of the chapter to read so I haven’t opened any spoilers yet. Just wanted to post about どのほど. I didn’t know ほど, as in なるほど, is it’s own word! I thought なるほど was it’s own distinct word/phrase, and not like なる+ほど, which means you can also say どの+ほど. Whoa!

Really enjoyed this weeks reading, maybe my favorite overall chapter so far. Very interesting getting more into the family backstory and more foreshadowing for what’s to come!!

Finished the reading!

I actually think the dress doesn’t suit Sakura at all (it’s old-fashioned and it seems pretty oversized/boxy) but that’s interesting from a character perspective. Of course her great grandfather who’s seen her literally once ever isn’t going to give her something modern and well-fitting like Tomoyo would, haha. I’m glad she and her dad like it!

LMAO I had the same thought!! Like a gown you put a 4 year old in. But at least it was really meaningful to everyone :smiling_face_with_tear: that dress is definitely getting relegated to the back of the closet though

Re: Yukito

In this week’s reading you can really see the way Sakura’s relationship with Yukito has developed (…or rather, hasn’t developed). She’s interacting with him in much the same way that she did back in volume one, even though she’s vaguely worried about him and she knows he’s sometimes a magical angel.

Meanwhile, the danger Yukito is in has been spurring Touya to get closer to him in order to protect him, because Touya, despite not knowing the details about Yue, understands something of the supernatural, and he also knows Yukito well enough to know something is severely wrong.

It’s interesting to see the contrast between Sakura’s puppy love for Yukito and the deeper connection between peers that Touya and Yukito share.

That’s such a great insight! I have noticed that Sakura is still treating him a bit like an icon (squee-ing over just being near him - still! Even though she sees him literally all the time and also knows he’s Yue!), but I didn’t really register it as a point of contrast to how Touya and Yukito are getting closer together. Thanks for sharing
