How To Participate:

There are three editions of Cardcaptor Sakura, all of which can be used for this book club.

For the Vol 8 reading, you will need one of the following:

  • the original edition (OG) or refurbished edition (RE) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 8 (softcover, hardcover or digital)

  • the anniversary edition (AE) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 6-7 (hardcover)

Differences Between Editions

Card Captor Sakura has three editions: the original edition (OG), the refurbishment edition (RE), and the anniversary edition (AE).

  • The paperpack copy is OG, the original hardcover version is RE.

  • Digital versions are mostly RE, but some are OG.

  • To distinguish between OG and RE books, look between chapters. If there’s a picture of Kero-chan and the words “refurbishment edition,” you have an RE book.

  • The AE is a newer hardback edition. It has more chapters than either OG or RE books. For example, vol 1 of AE contains chapters 6 and 7, which are part of vol 2 for the OG and RE.

  • To check if your hardcover book is AE, simply look at the cover. It’ll say なかよし60周年記念版 on it near the bottom!

This reading is for カードキャプターさくら (Cardcaptor Sakura), NOT カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card). Buy carefully!

Schedule:

Note: all page numbers are based on the print version of the refurbishment edition (RE).

If you are reading the digital edition of the RE, the digital page count will be a few pages ahead of the print. Please check how many pages off your copy is before using the page numbers below.

If you aren’t reading the refurbishment edition, the page numbers will be completely different than those listed below. Please pay special attention to the chapter number and the last panel for every week, which should be the same between editions.

If you do, please add vocabulary using printed page numbers for consistency, even if you are using a digital edition.

Otherwise, consider using Manga Kotoba for your vocabulary needs!

Week 2: Chap 31 Pt 2

I’m back home, and excited to keep reading with all of you! Time to close off the first chapter of this volume :tada:

Note: We’ll be reading one chapter per week for the next two weeks! The next week is relatively heavy for a one-week reading, so you may want to get ahead a bit if you can!

It was quite a surprise when I was working on the last panels for this volume! I’m not sure what exactly I was expecting but it wasn’t that lol.

It’s a one week chapter, folks!

Sakura has a very BIG problem this week. Hopefully we can get that problem all small and cute again!

Yukito-san!!! Don’t disappear :sob:

So much is happening in this chapter! I’m worried… excited to see where things go though!

By the way folks, now that it’s December, I’d like to revisit the idea of a Christmas break! Please vote and share your thoughts here:

I really love the ‘second half’ of this series! I felt that way with the anime, and it’s true now with the manga as well! Yue is my favorite character for one thing, and he doesn’t show up until almost the end of the first half. And Yukito, IMO, doesn’t really get interesting until the second half… This chapter in particular has so many great moments: Sakura’s wings, Yue getting to see proof that Sakura really does care about him, poor Shaoran getting blocked from confessing by the person he’s trying to confess too, and finally getting some insight into how Yukito is feeling about what’s happening to him! It’s a good thing it’s just about time for bed, or I’d have been tempted to keep on reading into the next chapter…or to start re-watching the anime for the hundredth time (though it has been a couple years now since the last time…)

It really is a great chapter!! I totally agree about Yukito – for the first half of the series, most of what we know about him is “quiet nice guy who is so pretty little children get crushes on him. also he likes to eat a lot”
I’m glad to see him get actual character development haha

Week 4: Chap 33

Another one week chapter, folks! This is the last one for the volume.

It looks like Sakura needs a bit of a break! I wonder if she’ll get one?

FYI folks, as per the results of the Christmas break poll, we’ll be taking a one week break next week!

I hope you have a nice break, and that Sakura does as well

Really love how Touya is developing as a character. I thought his interaction with Mirror was so heartwarming. He seems to roll with all this fantastical stuff so well despite the fact that it must be incredibly destabilizing. I like that he seems to go with kindness whenever possible.

Also this panel made me laugh out loud omg Sakura’s feverish face is just too much!

Don’t forget that Touya was sensitive to the supernatural even as a child – back in Vol 1 we learned that he used to regularly see youkai and ghosts, including his own mother. I imagine that the supernatural is fairly normal to him, but that doesn’t talk about it since he knows a lot of people don’t believe in it.

I think Touya has always had a lot of depth beneath the surface, but he’s fairly quiet, and in particular he doesn’t really talk about serious stuff with Sakura (understandably enough, since she’s his little sister and much younger than him too!)

That’s a great panel – I love Kero’s over the top reaction, too!

Happy New Year, folks! Here it is… the last part of Vol 8!

We start this week with a little bit of spice to counteract the sugar! But it’s still a very sweet week.

I’m a big fan of the end to this volume :sparkling_heart:

I’m glad Sakura gets to connect to her great-grandpa in a small way! Maybe she’ll get to like. Actually learn who he is at some point???
