How To Participate:

There are three editions of Cardcaptor Sakura, all of which can be used for this book club.

For the Vol 7 reading, you will need one of the following:

  • the original edition (OG) or refurbished edition (RE) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 7 (softcover, hardcover or digital)

  • the anniversary edition (AE) of カードキャプターさくら Vol 5-6 (hardcover)

Differences Between Editions

Card Captor Sakura has three editions: the original edition (OG), the refurbishment edition (RE), and the anniversary edition (AE).

  • The paperpack copy is OG, the original hardcover version is RE.

  • Digital versions are mostly RE, but some are OG.

  • To distinguish between OG and RE books, look between chapters. If there’s a picture of Kero-chan and the words “refurbishment edition,” you have an RE book.

  • The AE is a newer hardback edition. It has more chapters than either OG or RE books. For example, vol 1 of AE contains chapters 6 and 7, which are part of vol 2 for the OG and RE.

  • To check if your hardcover book is AE, simply look at the cover. It’ll say なかよし60周年記念版 on it near the bottom!

This reading is for カードキャプターさくら (Cardcaptor Sakura), NOT カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card). Buy carefully!

Schedule:

Note: all page numbers are based on the print version of the refurbishment edition (RE).

If you are reading the digital edition of the RE, the digital page count will be a few pages ahead of the print. Please check how many pages off your copy is before using the page numbers below.

If you aren’t reading the refurbishment edition, the page numbers will be completely different than those listed below. Please pay special attention to the chapter number and the last panel for every week, which should be the same between editions.

Week Date Chapter Pages (RE) Page Count (no inter-chapter art)
1 Oct 11 27 Pt 1 6-27 22
2 Oct 18 27 Pt 2 28-50 20
3 Oct 25 28 51-98 45
4 Nov 1 29 99-144 43
5 Nov 8 30 Pt 1 145-168 24

Vocabulary:

The vocab sheet lists three sets of page numbers: OG (original edition), RE (refurbishment edition) and AE (anniversary edition). When adding page numbers, please use printed page numbers for consistency, even if you are using a digital edition.

*Note: I’ll only be putting in some more difficult vocabulary sporadically, but you’re welcome to add your own translations if you’re interested in doing so!

Note: On occasion there have been differences in dialogue between the editions. If the vocab sheet contains words that you can’t find in your manga, please check if it’s for a different edition than yours!

It’s time for Volume 7!

Week 1: Chap 27 Pt 1

Woohoo! We’ve made it through volume 6! It got tough at the end, eh?

It’s the start of volume 7, and that means it’s recap time! Take a bit of a breather and get yourself reacquainted with the world of Cardcaptor Sakura. (Wait, it’s been over a year since the club started, and I just now realized the club’s title says “Card Captor” instead of “Cardcaptor”! Well, I guess it’s tradition by now…)

Check out the home post for details on the week’s reading.

Happy discussing!

Week 2: Chap 27 Pt 2

We’ve made it through the recap… who’s this?

Nobody we have to worry about, surely!

Whoops, I always seem to get mixed up on the reading schedule when we change volumes. Just finished week 1 - sooo easy compared to that last chunk of vol 6! I was able to get through it in one sitting. Thanks again for explaining the relative clauses. I noticed some of the same ones popping up this week. I guess some of them are becoming standard ways of introducing certain characters.

what’s the accepted translation for the new kid’s name, Elliot? Erio?

You’re welcome! I’m always glad to get questions, it gives me a reason to sit down and study parts in detail that I’d probably gloss otherwise

Also FYI, I just updated the home post with week 2’s reading details!

His official English name is Eriol! (Do not look him up, there are spoilers on the first page of results. I couldn’t avoid them… rip lol)

Oh nooo, sorry you got spoiled on my behalf :skull:

Chap 27 pt 2:

The phase 思ってたとおり comes up a few times. The only kanji I can find for とおり is 通り. Is this like “I thought I passed by you”, or more like “I thought I recognized you”?

Also WHOA to this chapter! I guess Sakura will never get to rest and just be a kid…

Just finished the chapter, feels like starting all over again with all the reintroductions and context setting.

とおり/どおり(JLPT N3 Grammar: とおりに (toori ni) Meaning – JLPTsensei.com) is a grammar point - it means “just like”, so nakuru’s use in the chapter is something like “Just like I thought! So cute!”, and then sakura’s dialogue on the next page is her quoting nakuru and wondering if touya said anything about her to make Nakuru think that.

Hey folks, hope your reading is going well!

As a reminder, we’ll be reading one chapter per week for the next two weeks in a row. Remember to pace yourselves – if you’ve finished this week’s reading and have some busy times coming up, you may want to consider reading ahead a bit!

I imagine it’s a deliberate choice, since we’re “starting all over again” with whatever mysterious things are happening after the clow cards were all collected.

But it’s nice to get a little break after how the last volume ended!

Thanks for the grammar point!

Week 3: Chap 28

It’s a full chapter this week, folks! We’re starting off with some action!

This chapter is relatively light in text, but there’s a couple somewhat harder pages near the end, so try not to leave those to the end of the week if you can avoid it!

Check out the home post for details on the week’s reading.

Week 4: Chap 29

Happy Halloween, folks! There are definitely some cool costumes in this chapter, wow!

This is another chapter that gets heavier near the end! At a glance I’d say there’s about ten pages that are longer/have some lore – it’s not as intense as the end of the last volume, but remember to pace yourself!

I got ahead last week and ended the AE volume, so I just kept reading onto the next chapter in a new volume. Came back here to post, check last panel. Last panel doesn’t match up with anything in my volume. “Costumes”? I don’t remember any costumes… Check the last volume I just finished. Last panel doesn’t match in there either. Realized I picked up volume 7 instead of 6 :person_facepalming: why am I so bad at following along omggggggggg OTL

…At least it was a light fluff chapter that could have slotted anywhere in the story, so I didn’t spoil anything major for myself. Gahhhh :sob:

Whoof, I’m glad you found out before the end of this week!

I do get it though, the AE volumes are getting more and more out of sync with the OG/RE versions…

I’m glad the last panel photos are helpful!

Special early polls for Vol 8 are up!

Hey folks, I’m going to be away when I would normally put up the vol 8 reading pace poll, so I’ve posted it early. Also, the vol 8 reading may overlap with the Christmas season, depending on our reading pace, so I’ve put up a preliminary poll re: if people want to take a Christmas break.

If you could vote early I’d appreciate it, but if you’re not ready to decide yet, that’s fine too! The important thing for me is that I’ve gotten the polls up while I have computer access.

Really didn’t see it coming! I expected Eriol to be a dark Li sort of character, not that!
I also like that we are learning more about Touya’s magical intuition as well. I’m very curious to see where his storyline goes. It’s interesting that some kind of magic seems to run in the Kinomoto family.

Also was not expecting the reveal at all!! It is interesting though I can definitely feel how this volume feels like the start of a “part 2”, so I can’t say I’m surprised they branded it as such for the English release
