More Kero thoughts for end of the previous chapter.

OG39: Just thinking about “only Sword was different", I was thinking of that as “Sword was the only different one”, but now I’m think more like “But Shadow was different”, meaning different from the ones that came before.

OG40: Then Kero talks about Sword targeting Sakura. As @zucchi mentions, Sakura brings up Shadow. I think Kero is at least thinking out load when he says Touya is the one who ends up being hurt.

But I’m wondering if Shadow wasn’t just causing trouble like the other cards and only decided to test Sakura when she went after it. If so, Sakura was right, Shadow wasn’t after her. Of course that would mean it was a odd coincidence that it showed up at Touya’s shop when Sakura was there.

This might be my favorite reading of the series so far. Touya gets so much respect from me here and the Card’s seemingly impending emotional arc is so well done too. Can’t wait for next week

Woo, glad I finally got some time to do this week’s reading! I really liked this part!! In fact it was so compelling I read through next week’s reading as well entirely by accident :joy:

Vague spoilers for Week 3/4

I was like “why is Touya being so dumb” but he was actually being a sweetheart (…and rather naive but I can forgive that lol)

That’s next weeks reading right? I don’t think I made it there yet

heck!! I was in such a rush I read the whole chapter without thinking

It’s a good chapter!

Spoiler warning has been edited, sorry about that! And I’ll leave one of the comments for next week :joy:

This was a fun and relatively easy section. There are two places where I think I get the meaning but I’m not sure of the grammar. I’m hoping someone can explain.

OG 62

ケロちゃん says “早よ 走らんかい!” I get that he’s saying something to Li about going faster, but I’m clear exactly what.

OG 66

Touya is talking to the fake Sakura that he thinks is a ghost. And says “よろしくいっといてくれ”. Something like “Give my best (to my Mom).” But why is it “いっといて”? I’ve seen that be short for “いっておいて”, but with the meaning of “do in advance”, so here “say in advance”. That doesn’t make sense to me here.

No worries haha, it was a good chapter - definitely made me want to read the whole thing so I get it

Can’t look at my book rn, so not sure on the second one. But for the first at least you’ve got it.

早よ(はよ) is essentially just 早くmore or less, it’s an adverb for quick

走らん is abbreviated 走らない

And かい is a less harsh/direct form of か

So in a less casual fashion this is something like 早く走りませんか?or, wont you run faster?

Thanks, @jablekanji!

Week 4: Chap 12, Pt 2

That was quite the chapter (aren’t they all?)! I think it’s interesting how many cards seem to be more conceptual than tangible elements. I’m not sure I quite understood the reasoning getting to mirror, I’ll probably have to re-read a bit. If that was me there’s no way I would think a mirror and illusion card would exist in the same book, they seem so similar!

Thought I’d get thru the whole chapter without a questions, but on the second to last page…

OG page 92

“お兄ちゃんたちに持ってくついでに” Is this a missing い situation, so “持っていく”? And there are a lot of meanings for ついで, but I’m thinking “We’ll take it to Touya and Yuki on the way”.

I did like the chapter. Fun how Touya thought the card was a ghost. And earlier ケロちゃん not wanting to say ゆうれい to Sakura (back on page 53).

Finished the reading last night and I’ll echo what’s being said but yeah what a chapter. I’ve enjoyed the series so far but this might be the first time I thoroughly enjoyed a chapter front to back and really thought the whole thing was quite good. Highlight for me this week was the mirror card mimicking sakuras movements to help her guess that she was the mirror card. The card’s remorse and apology was really unique to see. Also sakuras renewed conviction to collect all the cards as a result of Touyas incident was awesome. This whole chapter really did a lot for the sibling relationship to feel a lot more wholesome and real for me.

I think the “advance” here is “in advance of me being able to greet her myself,” since Touya is not dead.
Also, according to my cursory research,“よろしく言っておいて” is commonly used in general to mean “Give my regards to X”/“Say hi to X for me.”

OG page 92

Yeah, looks like a missing い.
As for the overall meaning, I’m pretty sure the other bubble is part of the sentence too.

The full sentence would be:
お兄ちゃんたちに持ってくついでにわたしたちも部屋で食べよ

For the translation of ついでに, I found JLPT Sensei helpful – rather than focusing on a specific translation, I like the full explanation:
“This is used when you take advantage of an opportunity to do an extra action.”

So, I might translate the sentence something like this:

Literal:
“Let us take these and go to my brother and Yukito, and while we are there, let us also eat in the bedroom!”

More natural:
“Let’s take these to Touya and Yukito – and we can eat with them too!”

Makes sense, @zucchi , thanks!

OG 92

Thanks for the ついでに pointer and explanation, @zucchi .
I have seen missing い showing up in things like してる for している, but not in いく before.

One of my favorite little things about this manga has been the different artistic flourishes used on many panels. You see a lot of fun techniques like stamps, washes, delicate line drawings, and dithering patterns. Often several layered at once! I like that it makes the manga feel like a series of scrapbook pages or diary entries with cute stationery
