For fun (and since I have a few minutes to spare before heading out), I looked up “ペコペコなので” on Google. First-page results are:
- おなかがペコペコなので 、昼ごはんは何を食べようか考えています。
- お昼からお腹ペコペコなので 、今夜は良いライブが出来そうです(о´∀`о)前売りとかないので、お気軽に遊びに来てください来てくださいませ☆そして、ベッチトリオのライブがとても楽しみ。
- お腹ペコペコなので早めにランチ。
- お腹ペコペコなのでカサ増し大盛り和風パスタ⋈.
- 基本的にはお腹もペコペコなので断ってますが、1時間残業をする場合はどの程度休憩をもらえますか?
- お腹ペコペコなので～. 食べるよ～ ムシャムシャと～ゴクゴクします～.
- みんなお腹がペコペコなので、 6 幸?

The basic difference between these two なs is that the な following an adjective is the 活用語尾 (conjugative suffix), whereas the な following a noun is the auxiliary「だ」.
It’s basically what you said about something having to separate the noun and ので, but it seems like it’s more about だ・な having to follow a noun.
Again, in other cases, since in this case we’re talking about a な adjective already.

Just one question…
If you were translating this, would you change it to “Why are you smiling?” I know it’s not strictly correct, but it matches the pictures and what we would say in English. I really do appreciate having the literal grammar explained like you’ve done here, thank you again, I was just wondering about your thoughts on translation (a field I know nothing about but which I’m slowly starting to see is a billion more times more complex than I ever imagined!)

Sequence of events:
Dad smiles → Dad starts eating
No longer smiling.
So, “Why did you smile (before eating my snacks)?” seems to make more sense.

Regarding な: There’s still so much out there for me to learn. Sometimes I’ll learn two different things involving the same thing and I may get them confused, or I may accidentally supplement my knowledge of one thing with another.
I had a deficit of knowledge here. I had been under the impression な-adjectives act as a noun without な, and they act as an adjective with the な. (I’m sure what I wrote makes more sense, in all its incorrectness, knowing where my knowledge was wrong.)
This is one of those areas where I can usually figure it out well enough in a sentence to understand the meaning without fully grasping the underlying grammar. I do plan to learn the Japanese terms for the grammar and then to better understand grammar under Japanese rules rather than English rules of grammar, but I’m not there yet.
Picking up my copy of “The Handbook of Japanese Adjectives and Adverbs” by Taeko Kamiya, I see he writes, “な-adjectives are similar to nouns in that they conjugate with the copula だ.” In a list of conjugations, the な form is listed as “prenominal” tells me “placed before a noun”.
I feel like I’m about to see な-adjectives completely differently from now on.

I’ve not seen that movie (I think the last time I saw a Disney movie was over 40 years ago!), but that is quite an image!

Yes, the project was fun - but oh, so time-consuming. I was both biting off more than I can chew, and punching way, way above my weight. My Japanese skill is no-where near good enough. It takes me an hour still to read a page of Yotsuba. I need to look up everything. Nothing stays in my brain.
As for the other page, oh, just tired of it. I only really set it up for my tour-guide clients, just to give them a little taster of Tokyo before they arrive here, but it’s not essential. I gave up Facebook too a long time ago and am actually happier without social media.
No, that’s not entirely true… I couldn’t do without the WK forums, and especially the Yotusba bookclub, and hopefully more beginner books too! Thanks, in large part, to you!

I’m so glad this book club got restarted, Yotsuba is really fun to read! I love the part where she’s like “APOLOGIZE!” I know that it’s normal to refer to yourself by name in Japanese, but it somehow makes it more funny to me that she’s saying “YOTSUBA IS ANGRY. APOLOGIZE TO YOTSUBA.”
I got a little bit confused on page 22 with the exchange where her dad is correcting her about what time it is. Is this right?
Yotsuba: “First… 11:01!”
Dad: “That time is already passing…” [already past?]
Yotsuba [upset]: “Ah! True. Now it’s 11:03.”
Dad: “It’s 15 past…”
Yotsuba [upset]: “I APOLOGIZE FOR UNACCEPTABLE LATENESS. NOW PLEASE WAIT A BIT.”
Dad, aside: “that speech sounds like you memorized it… … from me?”

Your breakdown of page 19 (not 22) sounds right to me. But I had a slightly different last line:
そんなセリフどこでおぼえた… 俺?
I put more emphasis on the どこで and came up with:
“where did you learn that kind of line? From me?”
But I’m the very last person to be giving advice on Japanese, and I’m already reaching for my flack jacket! This was more just to say WELCOME!
